Steve Hessler and Rock Creek were a company I could not recommend enough. Having to get rid of our other contractor, we talked to Steve and his professionalism convinced he was the company to go with from the start. Steve and his crew came out to discuss our desired renovations and were starting the project well within the proposed timeline. The crew was there every day and we could visible progress by the time they left each night. We had to take a sunroom down to the studs and convert to a four season room. We were dealing with some water issues and they were very patient and attended every concern we had to ensure our happiness and confidence with the finished product. They always responded to any questions we had in a timely manner and we could tell they wanted to deliver a complete and quality product. Steve and Rock Creek are the first company we will call for our next project.

I’ve had to spend thousands of dollars repairing what they ruined. There have been multiple leaks in our roof from there atrocious work, we just turned on the water flow to the new bathroom and the ceiling became saturated as they improperly hooked up the plumbing now costing us thousands in plumbing and drywall repairs. The doors to the addition have, in less than a year, rotted and allowed the spread of mold due to improper sealing. They broke my condenser outside had to replace it but the hvac crew they subcontracted never attached the ducts. They’ve cost me thousands in additional work calling in actual skilled trades men to repair their awful work.

Steven came out to provide the quote, and the value and the experience Steven stated led us to choose Rock Creek. Our subcontractor wasn't quite as personable as Steven was, and I have a lot to say, so I'll just list it below. But, to summarize, our subcontractor was not considerate of our time or property, and our roof continues to leak despite 3 attempts to seal it. I would not recommend them.
Pros
1) The deck is sturdy. It doesn't feel like it's going to, like, collapse or anything.
2) The materials seem to be reasonable and high quality.
3) Steven is responsive by email and phone.
4) They offer 12 months warranty, which they seem to stand to.
5) They handled all the building permits.
6) They added a curved railing and higher corner beams at no extra charge.
Cons
1) The roof still leaks. Including the original work, there have been a total of three unsuccessful attempts to seal it.
2) I was quoted 10-14 days by both the general and sub contractors. The deck was finished on Day 32. Sure, it rained a few times. But, there were a whole bunch of gorgeous days where nobody came to work on the deck.
3) There was not much attention to detail. There are a lot of bolts that don't go through the beams (like, they're offset by a few inches), or that go through at an angle and have splintered where they go through. One corner has two railing posts with a gap in between, instead of a single post to connect the railings. Drains and gutters were damaged during the construction and not fixed. Lots of plastic pieces on the railings and handles weren't secured.
4) The workers scratched up our interior walls and chipped paint where they carried materials through our house. They left dirty handprints and boot marks allover the inside of our house, which were left to us to clean. I told them that I would be happy to pay a little extra money for them to hire somebody to come and clean up after the workers. That way they could deliver a clean, polished finished product that I could feel good about because it was new and 'shiny'. I was told that they do not do that.
5) At no point was there communication with me about which days work would progress, or when things would finish. I just randomly got a call one afternoon saying "We are ready to sign the completion paperwork".
6) A large amount of debris was left under the deck that eventually washed out. Including a hacksaw blade that our 18 month son found.
7) The only way I knew when the workers had come during the day was by the drastic increase in cigarette butts left around our property.
8) Whats the person called who comes to do the walkthrough once things are completed? The one who answers all your questions and makes sure things were done properly and stuff? Theres a name for them. For the one that did ours, it was his first day. Seriously. He had never done that before. He told me that explicitly. There wasn't anybody there training him or anything. It was just deer-in-headlights the whole time. Plus, when I came home on that day when they randomly called and said out of the blue "time to come home so we can complete the construction", he was in our bathroom with the lights off for a very long time before coming down and introducing himself. Which made it even more awkward, strange, and unprofessional for the both of us. And then he asked to use the bathroom again before he left. At least he asked the second time.
Steve Hessler was very professional in providing an estimate to replace the front porch. The crew showed up a little later than expected due to a flat tire. They finished the job in one day and removed all of the debris. Yard was left very clean and no damage to landscaping. One minor issue was addressed and corrected within a week. Overall we are pleased with the outcome.
The porch ceiling was leaking water and leaf debris was coming in through the deck and previous ceiling and he really went above and beyond to come back and re-engineer it to be dry and drain water properly. The owner of this company, Steve Hessler, really worked on this until I was satisfied and the porch is now dry. I would highly recommend him.
From beginning to the end the guys at Rock creek were amazing. We had them submit plans and drawings to give to our HOA and after plans were approved the guys started building the deck immediately. The deck was done within the time frame they had provided us. Steve was great to deal with and the guys who built the deck showed up early at 8 am everyday and stayed till late evening to finish it. They didn't waste anytime they didn't take smoke breaks or waste time talking on cell phones. They worked hard even in the blazing sun and efficiently without taking shortcuts. The end result is a beautiful deck that we will cherish for a long time. The attention to detail and craftsmanship was top notch. They cleaned up the entire area everyday put away all their tools and the garbage debris was cleaned up every single day. When they finished they cleaned up the entire yard took away all the trash excess materials and left it in good condition

Working with Steve Hessler and Rock Creek Decks and Additions was a pleasure. My wife and I contracted with them to install a roof deck on our rowhome in Canton, Baltimore. She and I both work in the design/build industry, so our project was not going to be your run-of-the-mill deck. We knew exactly what we wanted from the start, and we know just enough about construction to be dangerous, and that means we can be a major pain-in-the-butt for any contractor. Steve was super friendly and open to working with our particular and unique design ideas throughout the whole process. He is a genuinely warm individual and his attitude and vast experience in his trade instilled confidence in us from the get-go.
We interviewed and received quotes from 4 or 5 contractors before signing on with Steve and RCDA, and almost all of those other quotes came in significantly higher than Steve?s bid. Not to mention, Steve was able to start and finish our project very quickly - within a few months of our initial quote. He manages different crews on different projects simultaneously so you?re paying for his detail work, oversight and management of the project, but not for his expertise onsite all-day-every-day when the bulk of that time would be unnecessary. Some contractors we spoke to in the past were opposed to the idea of tailoring the design to our wishes. We felt like they wanted to build their deck on our house, not our deck on our house. Steve and RCDA not once balked at the choosy specifics of our material choices, our particular layout and designs, or the custom-built details of our project. He instead was particularly excited to work with us to build a unique end product. Also, at no time did we feel like he was trying to pull a fast one on us, which I understand is a big fear for most homeowners. It was almost a bonus that he and the crew were very courteous and exceptionally clean during the interior work of our house.
Each day they worked we had one foreman and about two laborers at the house. Steve seemed to stop in once every few days or so to address detail issues, to make sure things were going as planned, and to fill the foreman in on the next steps in the project. On occasion, we would come home from work to find that the crew had progressed with construction in a way that was contrary to our original discussions. We would then shoot Steve a text about the issue (in many cases he already knew), and he would be there early the next day to straighten things out. As I stated before, my wife and I had very strong opinions on the project and wanted to see our design carried out to the fullest extent. I imagine we were more involved than the typical homeowner would have been. It was stressful for my wife and I in the few instances when the crew had progressed in error; however, Steve was always a phone call away and would set the matter straight, even if it meant additional material and labor costs on his end.
We have lived with the deck for about a month now and are still happy with the results. We?ve found a few issues and he has come back to take care of them. There are a few details we?ll take care of on our own, since we know he?s gone above and beyond in every other respect. In the end, everything worked out great and we are happy with the overall experience. If you are picky, know that Steve is very available and seems happy to please. He is very responsive via call or text, but occasionally needs reminders of particular details (understandable for someone managing multiple projects). If you?re planning on a standard deck and don?t want to be heavily involved, I believe Steve and RCDA would provide a quality and safe product. If we had to do it again, we would choose Steve Hessler and Rock Creek Decks and Additions.
We were impressed with Steve upon initial contact. He told us a great price for the project and all the details about the warranty. We were impressed that Steve told us the project would take "2 days to complete" and it would be done "3 to 5 days after HOA approval." About 2 days later we reached out to Steve that we wanted to contract Rock Creek to complete the project. He sent us a contract that had a different price than we had been quoted but Steve apologized and he fixed the price without question. We submitted payment (1/3 payments) and were told that he would schedule our project for that week. Having heard nothing we waited about a week and contacted Steve again regarding when our project would be started. He said again that it would be a two day project and it would be done that week. On Friday of that week we got a text from Steve saying that the project was going to be started that day and would be finished the next day (Saturday). My husband and I were away and were excited that the deck would be done when we returned on Sunday. It had rained on Saturday so we weren't optimistic that project would be done but we were excited to see it started (as stated, in writing). We returned Sunday to find nothing was done. I called Steve and told him I was disappointed nothing had started since he had initially said it would be completed Saturday. He stated it rained both days and when I told him I knew it had only rained Saturday he gave the excuse they didn't dig the holes because they would have filled with water. Steve promised the workers would be there Monday and it was only a two day job so it would be done Tuesday. He apologized for not informing me of the delay and promised he would be prompt form now on. The workers came dug the holes and left. I called Steve Monday asking why again very little work was done. He gave the excuse that the supplier didn't deliver the supplies so the workers left so that they "wouldn't be paid to sit around." I once again told him that I should have been called about this delay. He told me I was right and that would make sure to call me. I asked if the deck was going to finished the next day. He promised it would be done and that it "was only a two day job." I told him that I knew if was going to rain and he told me "I promise my guys will work through the rain." Well the next day came and the workers arrived and finished at about 3pm and the deck was not complete. I received no call from Steve about the status of the deck. I had my husband text Steve and he replied "I can't help the rain" the same weather he promised his guys would work through. He promised that the workers only needed 2 more hours and it would be completed. I called the owner who gave me an excuse of the supplier sending the wrong color rails and that's why they could finish (even the floor boards weren't complete so they didn't work up until that point). The owner was very sorry but had plenty of excuses. The next day the men did finish the deck but it took about 5+ hours of work instead of the quoted 2-3 hours. The bottom line is that this company made SO MANY promises that were not kept and had an excuse for everything. Don't listen to the timelines they give you. When we finally got our final invoice we got a note that said- keep in mind that the work was completed within the contracted time and we put you in front of many customers. I'm sorry but I didn't ask to be put in front of anyone. I just asked you to do what you said you were going to do. Nothing more. Also through all of this we just got excuses no monetary compensation for all the unkept promises. If I am paying thousands of dollars for a project you can at least call me to tell me the workers did an hour of work and aren't coming back. There are better companies out there. Don't make promises you can't keep Rock Creek.
Response from Rock Creek Decks and Additions LLC
"[Member Name Removed], Our only goal was to please you. Steve sometimes over promises and when it is not delivered, the disappointment sets in. Though i can assure you, Steve's only concern is your happiness. You even said yourself that he was very apologetic for the weather, even tbough he cant control it. Unfortunately with your particular job, there were several unfortunate delays with weather and suppliers, but none were because of Steve or the men. Even with all the delays, we completed your job in only 4 days which is 3 days sooner than the contract that you signed and agreed to stated. As far as the contract price being wrong, we honored an extra discount off for your husbands job even though you took advantage of an angies list coupon which clearly states that no other discounts would apply. We gave you a fantastic price, (at our cost after coupons and discounts) and we started your job within the contract dates and finished the job 3 days early and the deck is beautiful . Again, we are sorry that your expectations were not met but we did meet snd supercede all our contractural obligations. Thank you for the business and we hope you enjoy your deck."

I had them curve the outside edge of deck and install black spindles on the rails. They also installed solar caps on every post. The men were professional and courteous and no nonsense! They completed the work in 3 days and 2 of those days were a Saturday and Sunday! All work was completed with the agreed upon price. Looking forward to a great summer on my new deck!
