I have a recent contract with Scott for his company to paint the front porch area of our house. My conclusion: not the quality you would expect, and not professional when working on the issues.

Three main issues:

1. Although ?Sand and remove loose/peeling paint? is stated in the contract, his crew didn?t sand any area at all to begin with. After they left, I noticed many uneven painted surfaces, and informed Scott. His crew came back and tried to fix the problems.

2. Again, after they left for the second time, I found several areas with air bubbles of different sizes. I emailed and called Scott. I received no response. Finally, my call went through, and we were able to make an appointment for Scott to stop by in one afternoon at 3:30 pm. However, in the morning of the day for our appointment, I was at work and got a call from Scott. He said he was calling from my home, and all the problems had been fixed. I was surprised--why he came without informing me and totally discarded our appointment.

3. After I got home from work, I checked the front porch, and noticed a couple of air bubbles were still there: one being as large as 7? by 1?, and the other being 4? by 1?. I emailed him, and called him and left messages. NO response. When I finally got him on phone a week later, he claimed he would not come back to fix the air bubbles and simply hanged up the phone before we were able to finish our conversation.

The air bubbles are still there.

"This is precisely why I am finished with Angies List. A customer can spew lies and have the potential to harm a contractors business, and in some cases even EXTORT money, even when the customer is in the wrong. Angies List "arbitration" is a joke as they will print the customers grievance, even if proven wrong. (It's in your contract) they tell me. This guy [ member name removed] wanted his exterior porch railings to look like interior woodwork to the point where he wanted us to fill in the screw holes with wood filler. The proposal stated one primer coat and one finish coat. He received two finish coats and we not only scraped but sanded with orbital sanders most surfaces. The "bubbles" [member name removed] is referring to were probably created when he admittedly took a putty knife to work I had just completed earlier in the day. I still sent a crew back to try and make this guy happy, and he still wanted his porch railings to look like banisters from out of Playhouse Square. My crew finished up (no charge) and no mention of an additional charge for the second and third coats we applied on this $685 job, and he still called, and text messaged, and emailed several more times. I still went back personally to look at the completed job. It was fine except for the one piece of wood(exterior mind you), that had bubbled up. ( probably where he had messed with my work). I sanded the wood again, primed it, and finished coated it , only to get multiple more contacts by [member name removed]. I take great pride in the work I want to put my name on and for the houses and businesses that trust in us to complete their work. Every attempt to make this guy happy was made, even when it cost me additional monies and time."

Scott and his crew were professional and courteous. They offered an excellent paint job at a fair price. They came when expected and finished within the quoted time frame. We could not have been happier and we will contract with Scott's Painting again in the future.
Scott of Scott's painting, was quick to respond to my initial call and did his estimate the next day. He started on the agreed upon day which was the week before Labor day. There was a delay of one work day, but everthing else went according to schedule. There was a minor amount of spray that hit some plants, but nothing that caused any damage or problems.
The work quality was very good and the pinters were courteous and friendly.
I was please with the final product, the timliness and the pricing. I would recommend Sott's painting to others.
Received the quote, company very professional, a bit of a mix up with how many coats of stain they would be putting on, but management straightened that all out. Would recommend.
It was a horrible experience. We were left with having to do touch up painting, cleaning paint off windows and redoing some areas.
Contractor was friendly and punctual. The job was completed quickly. Contractor did not go back to touch up errors in the paint line. The ceiling lines were not crisp. There was quite a bit of paint clean up left behind on the floor, furniture, banister and bathroom faucet. One wall did not dry with a streak-free finish. I'm happy it was done quickly, but the quality was a bit sloppy.
In addition to the floor damage, they emptied their paint buckets (with oil paint!) onto my front garden! They never asked for a hose, they just took one of ours and made a mess.
Ironically, they did not remove the interior door handles that they were supposed to remove, but they did attempt to remove our front deadbolt lock, which they left broken along with the other from door lock! They offered to buy another lock and re-key our back door to match it, but we did not think that it was a good idea to let them have a key to our house. (Locks that are purchased at Home Depot or Lowes include the keys, which they could have easily duplicated.)

Scott complained constantly about the quality of the work that was done on the new room, yet he had lots of excuses for the mistakes that they made.
We had a contract for the work and I agreed verbally to $200 extra to put another coat of paint on a ceiling and to skim coat some rough wood on a column and repaint it. Scott tried to charge over $500 for the work! And ironically, he never fixed the ceiling. I had suggested that he could fill the holes that were left in a bead board ceiling by using a small paint brush and touching up each hole by hand. He said he would repaint it. It still looked bad and my husband spent 3 hours doing the touch up by hand to fix it.
We are still getting quotes for repairing our damage. Unfortunately, Scott's Painting no longer takes credit cards (contrary to their claims on Angie's List), so we have little recourse in recovering our damages.
A word to the wise, never ever pay a contractor until all the work is completed and you have time to check it. You never know when you might run into a contractor like Scott McWhinney.
We are hoping that Angie's List will help us to get reimbursed from Scott for our damages.
Response from SCOTT'S PAINTING CO
"I was warned by several other contractors not to take this job and I should have listened. All that I would like to say is that the claims made against myself and my company are completely false and if you wish to see a true reflection of my company, read the other reviews on the Angie’s List site. I could defend myself by going on and on but I will only say this…please pray for this member and their family."

Scott and his crew arrived promptly at the agreed upon time and got right down to work. They did a wonderful job and left the job site clean and neat. I am very satisfied with the work and plan to call them again for the rest of my home once we are ready for more painting to be done!
Prompt, Courteous, Clean - Finished in 4 hours. Great Value! I could not have done a better job on my own even if I'd have taken a whole weekend to complete it.

Scott came to give an estimate within 24 hours of the initial phone call. He is very professional and had great advice as to paint colors for the master bedroom and bathroom. He always called and kept me up to date on the potential job start date. He and his team came on time, worked thoroughly and quickly, and did a beautiful job. Cleaned up well too. I noticed some minor touch-ups were needed. He came the first business day after I called and fixed everything. I would not hesitate to call him again for additional paint jobs.

I am satisfied with their work. They are reasonably priced. The crew was nice and professional.
Update: They repaired several ceiling joints, all the repairs failed a few months after the job was finished. We are continuing to find areas of sloppy workmanship, paint drips on carpets and cabinets. In retrospect, we would not recommend this vendor.

Scott was professional when he came out to give me an estimate and helped with my color choices. After receiving the quote I scheduled the work to be completed on a specific date at least 2 weeks in advance.

Scott was onsite for the first few hours of the day and his crew worked hard and finished up everything by the day's end. I was surprised Scott did not contact me after the job was complete to make sure I was happy with the work and there were no issues. He had to leave after the job was about 1/4 of the way done. I gave my check to the crew when they left. The professionalism he exued during our first meeting/estimate process just led me to believe he would follow up with me and make sure I was pleased with the entire job/process. This may have been a 'small' job for them, but it was a huge job to us.

I am very pleased with the work and felt the price was fair. I would definitely use them again.

A small suggestion to the crew; smoking on your break time outside the house if of course fine. You may want to dispose of your cigarette butts in a container and not in the customer's mulch in the front yard. My husband was not too happy about this but we quickly picked them up as we have dogs and a toddler who may have found them interesting. Again the crew was great and worked really hard so I hate to mention anything negative but please keep it in mind for the future. Other customers may get much more upset over this. This would not stop me from hiring them again.

Scott returned my phone call within 24 hours and was at our home for an estimate within the next 24 hours. He was personable and offered professional advice. He and his crew arrived and had the job completed within 3 1/2 hours. We were very pleased. Every member of the team was friendly and professional. We were also very thankful that all of the team members and Scott were very patient with our dog, who tends to be very "curious." VERY impressed! We would definitely use Scott's Painting Company in the future and will recommend to friends and family.

Great experience overall. The team held pretty firm to their original schedule. Nice people. Professional and personable. They even helped out by moving a few pieces of furniture as well as going out of their way to take into account some of our inherent eccentricities. As first time customers, we were most impressed.

Everything from this company from the estimate to the finished work was done with a timely, professional manner. The estimate he provided was quite fair for the amount of work done. Scott brought a crew of 4 workers, including himself, that finished the job in a little less than a day. I have had other "professional" painters do work for me in the past, but Scott's Painting was by far the best in both price and quality. He even was able to fit in a couple of extra tasks that were not in the original estimate. Since Scott was with the crew, he was able to immediately give me a price for the extra work. I would highly recommend this company to others needing interior painting.

They were very professional and pleasant. They cared for their work and did a nice job. We had some problems with the kitchen ceiling where somebody else had tried to fix it. We had to have a hole cut out and we had never been able to get it right as far as the texture and repainting. They were able to fix that and they did it such that we could not tell that anything had been done. They did a very nice job. Their price was fairly reasonable.

Emailed request for quote on Friday, March 25th; received call on Saturday, 26th setting up appointment for Monday, 28th. Scott McWinnie quickly spotting the problem areas and detailed how he would proceed. On the spot made and ala carte proposal including serveral other items that we had considered. On Wednesday, the 30th we chose to have the living/dining room ceiling and dining room walls done. At 8:00 on Monday, April 4, Scott and his crew arrived ready to go. They reaffirmed exactly what was expected and quickly and expertly went to work. By 2 pm, the work was done and the rooms furniture restored - they even vacuumed where the furniture had hidden dust. The ceiling and walls look terrific. We have been much impressed with the professionalism and cordiality of the entire crew and with the results of their work. I'm sure, as funds become available, we will ask Scott to do the rest of the "nice-to-have" items (kitchen walls and ceiling; stairwell walls, ceiling, stringers and baseboards). I highly recommend Scott's Painting.

He is very, very professional. He came to give me a quote and the written quote was provided timely. He was very good as well when working with my wife in color choices. He is very knowledgable and paints and very skilled in color pallet and color selection. His crew was also very helpful and skilled. They cleaned up very well after ward and we dealt with no unnecessary messes. From beginning to end the projected job of less than a week was met as predicted. I highly recommend using Scott's Painting for both interior and exterior jobs.
