It went well. They did a good job. We had big rains about 6-7 months later and the roof held up well and looks good. I've referred them to others as well.

It was fine. They've done several roofs for me and their prices are as good as anybody's. No complaints.

The overall experience was exceptional. I researched several solar systems and found theirs to be a great value. And, their professionalism is spot on. I’ve recommended them to several people I know and three have installed their systems with Secure. Lin W.

TLDR---Ridge line vent took 3 tries to get right, and roll out also took 3 tries to get "mostly" right. After first completion, I noticed not all flashing was painted., and the roll out roofing for the flatter roof did not match the type of roof by a long shot. One small spot by the chimney between two valleys also used roll out, and was also wrong colored. The ridge line vent for the garage was never cut. They said they didn't realize I wanted a vent in the garage??? ridiculous, but hey didn't fight me on fixing it. They came back out, cut in the ridge line vent, and fixed the roll out. I inspected the roof again, and found the one spot by the chimney was not corrected. They corrected it by spray painting it a close color match. It will work as a fix, but now sure how long the paint will last on the shingle, which is a little frustrating. While in the garage, I realized the ridge line vent was not cut properly, across the entire ridge. It was 6 ft short on one side. I climbed into the attic to inspect that and found the same thing, it was cut 6 ft short. The excuses I got were wrong, but without arguing, they came back out to fix. The solar failed first inspection due to low hanging wires under panels, but that's not a big deal as the solar was already functioning. After day one of roofing, my kids found quite a few nails on the floor, as if they just forgot to pick them up, because they are easily spotted with big gaskets on them. Small amounts of trash were left behind, probably because of their size, as the men seemed to try to clean up after themselves fairly well, I was just expecting a better final clean. Lastly, we had skylights removed. not being a roofer, I wasn't aware the amount of debris that would fall onto my bed...a warning would had been nice, but I don't blame them for it. The roofers were friendly, and did not seem frustrated or irritated about constantly returning to fix work. Communication between the project manger was also consistent, with no issues in communication at all. Would use again depending on cost. If they were consistent with other companies, I would find someone else. Rated a "c" because at the end of the day, the roof looks good, the solar looks good, and if the roof doesn't leak, I will be happy.

They provided great service. The only issue I had was when I went through their financing, they put a lean on my home that I wasn't aware of. When I found out, while refinancing my home, I called Secure and they worked with me to resolve the issue. The monitoring system is great, the only issue I have is that they do not have a remote monitoring system for the customer.

In April of 2014 we decided to go with solar and contracted Secure Home Improvements to install a solar system, re-roof and build a waterproof second story (16’x16’) deck. Initially everything went well. As the job prolonged, cleanup became a bit sloppy. I have three kids (at the time one was 6, the other 4, and the third was not in the picture) so needless to say any debris in the backyard was unacceptable. Prior to the job they made an apparent mistake in the wood order, resulting in a pile of wood sitting in my yard during the entire construction. At the end, when the deck was completed and the wood pile was never touched, I was informed of their mistake. Not a big deal, but like I mentioned above it was a safety hazard because I had two young kids running around.

The roof installation seemed to go smoothly; good hard-working, efficient, friendly employees. More about the roof later.

The solar installation went smooth as well except there were problems with city inspections. On two separate occasions, inspections that were scheduled by Secure for the City to inspect the solar installation were canceled. One, because Secure no-showed, then on the second the Secure representative did not have the proper paper work to conduct the inspection. The third time was a charm, I guess. Because of this delay, the commencement of the solar system was delayed and I had to pay an extra SDG&E bill, which Dave reluctantly covered - thank you Dave.

The deck looks great, with only a few issues which I will cover later. The deck could have been completed sooner but there were several days that the crew did not show up. As I mentioned above, the wood that was left during the entire job was nothing more than inconvenient. My issues with the deck are as follows. Firstly, there is not enough pitch for the water to drain properly during rain or just clean up (hosing off, etc.). Water puddles in several spots and does not run off. I brought this issue up with Secure but was told according to code, it was “ok” to have water puddle as long as the water evaporated within 48 hours (or something along those lines). My issue is the sitting water, in time it will do damage. I did not pay for an “ok” job.

My second issue is with the stairs that were built leading up to the deck. A section of them are too steep. I have had several kids and adults slip and fall, one small child had to go to the emergency room. We are very grateful that the family this happened to are very close friends as they informed us that for several months they were contacted by attorney’s to sue but declined the opportunity. During the construction of the stairs, Tony the foreman assured me they would not be that bad and if any issue would arise, I could call Secure and they would remedy the problem (more on that later). I also brought this issue up to Dave the day he came to inspect the job at completion, he assured me they were perfect and brushed it off.

Prior to commencing all work I had to get a loan for the solar system installation; to make a long story short, there was a problem on the monthly loan payment. It was more than was promised by secure, so again to Secure’s credit Dave stepped up and discounted the price to meet the agreed-upon monthly payment. By then, the loan paper work had already been done and the payment was to be distributed with three checks pre-filled by the bank. So Dave and I agreed that he would cut me a check for the discounted amount, which was approximately $1,200.00, instead of cancelling and opening a new loan.

As the job reached completion I called Secure to remind them of the agreement, so that when they came to collect final payment they would also have my check for $1,200. When Secure came to collect final payment they did not have my check and I was told to call the office. When I called the office I spoke with their office manager Lynette, and was told that the $1,200 had already been discounted and if I knew how to do simple math I could figure it out (pretty rude if you ask me). So I attempted to call Dave to explain the issue that yes, the discount had been applied on paper, but the pre-filled checks still reflected the original amount prior to the discount. Dave told me he would not get involved; to deal with his office manager, and he was arriving to a customer’s home and pretty much hung up on me.

So finally, once they did the “simple” math and realized their mistake they cut the check for the $1,200 and we settled up.

The job was completed in July 2014. In December of 2014, I discovered a leak where the deck and roof meet. I called Secure to schedule an appointment to fix the leak. I was told because it was an outside leak, it was not a priority and they scheduled me an appointment to inspect, not repair, in January. Once the inspection was done towards the end of January, the leak was finally fixed. During the first appointment for the leak, I brought to Daniel’s attention the issue with the sitting water on the deck, and also about the stairs being too steep.

Nothing was done about the deck or the stairs. Somebody did come to inspect the deck but was told nothing could be done. I never heard back about the stairs.

In Nov or Dec of 2015 I discovered another leak, this time in my son’s bedroom. I called Secure and let them know that my 16-17 month old roof had another leak. They sent a young man, I don’t recall his name, to inspect the roof. He did not know the difference between a tile and composite shingle. How do I know this?, well I was called by Secure and asked if I had tile or shingles for the leak estimate. They provided an estimate even though I let Secure know it should be a warranty repair because it was a new roof. So, of course more time passed while they worked out whether it should be a warranty repair or not. Finally, it was repaired.

During this roof repair, I contacted a project manager about the stairs (instead of relying on my complaint about the stairs getting passed on) although pictures were taken and a phone call was made to the office by the Secure roofer. After several weeks, I contacted via e-mail the project manager to remind him of the issue. I was assured that he and Tony, the foreman who built the stairs, would come out in January 2016 to inspect the stairs. It is now June 27, 2016 and have not heard back (I have emails showing this exchange).

From January until now, June 2016, I’ve made several phone calls to Secure and was told someone would call me, but never did. Instead I had to keep calling to ensure this time, this issue won’t get pushed aside.

I finally had Tony come by and he agreed something had to be done. I am now waiting for the “something” to happen.

I feel I have to add that the roof that was replaced was an old tar and gravel roof, easily over 15 years old and never had a leak.

It has been two years since we went on-line with the solar system and couldn’t be happier. The performance and production is almost exactly what we expected. We have not had to pay any electric usage, although we intended to have extra capacity for future projects such as pool/jacuzzi, and we are pretty much breaking even.

The appearance and usefulness of the deck are great, the only downfall is the puddling water and hazardous stairs.
Please feel free to contact me, Secure or perspective customers.

Contract called for the removal of lightweight Spanish tiles as well as old, inoperable pool solar panels, the replacement of roof paper and installation of new solar panels and new standard weight Spanish tiles. The portion of the roof under the old pool solar panels was asphalt shingles. Secure was to replace with new asphalt shingles. The roofing portion of the contract was supposed to be free but what they did was jack up the price of the solar panels to make up the difference. Once the old pool solar panels were removed, Preston told me the asphalt shingles under the panels were still in good condition and did not need to be replaced. After the workers left for the day, I went up on the two story roof and looked at the 20 yr old shingles. They were in such bad condition, two of them crumbled in my hand. I insisted they be replaced with new. Preston apologized for the mistake and the old shingles were removed. It was discovered that there was wood damage under the old shingles that never would have been found had I not insisted Secure replace the shingles. The new shingles were two different colors and obviously left over from other jobs but I let it go. After the old tiles were stacked on my roof and new paper put down, the new solar panels were installed. The solar crew was very good. I was not at home during some of the installation but went up on the roof a second time when I came home and checked the installation of what was supposed to be new standard weight Spanish tiles only to find old, lightweight Spanish tiles had been installed. I was paying for new, heavier, more durable tiles but they were never delivered or installed. I took pictures of the old tiles that were installed next to the new solar panels. I was really upset as this was obviously product substitution and felt they were trying to take advantage of me because I was a single, older woman. Preston apologized again and said another employee had accidentally bought used tiles instead of new. I reminded Preston that I had given him a new standard weight tile as an example of what was to be purchased. During all of this, the owner, Dave Massey, never returned any of my calls until Preston agreed to replace the old tiles with new and give me a reduction in the contract price that amounted to about $1200 for my trouble. The original contract price was $27,000. Initially, Preston refused to give me any reduction in the contract price unless I promised not to give Secure a bad review. I refused. Massey then called me and was very rude. He told me the mistakes they made weren't worth "more than the cost of a dinner." There were other issues but I think I've provided enough information for anyone reading this to realize that what Secure did was not only poor workmanship but consumer fraud. I took pictures every step of the way of have evidence of everything.
Overall very pleased with the quality and timeliness of the work completed. There was some delay in the initial scheduling however the work, once started, was completed timely. The Solar install was done very quickly and SDG&E was quick to approve use. Solar energy output has met or exceeded the quoted level. The solar permit was approved ahead of install. Solana Beach city wanted a re-roof permit even though it was simply replacing the felt. Secure responded quickly to resolve the issue. The work crews were friendly, very helpful, paid attention to detail and cleaned up well at the end of each day.
From the very beginning it was a very professional experience. I received a timely estimate which I felt was fair. They had to wait quite a while for my homeowners approval and that was not a problem. I would like to single out Preston who was the scheduler and coordinator of the work. He was very helpful with all of my concerns. Certain things arose which required more money and I thought it was fair. My questions about the bill were answered in a timely manner. The crews themselves were very friendly and answered concerns. They did a super job cleaning everything up afterwards. Couldn't have been happier with the whole experience. It was an expense I didn't relish having.....but they made the experience the best it could be.
