THE JOB WENT WELL. THERE WERE SOME COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS. HE WAS A BIT INTIMIDATING, YET HE WAS ALSO VERY ACCOMODATING TO MY SPECIAL NEEDS REGARDING SENSITIVITIES /ALLERGIES TO CHEMICALS & FUMES. HE WORKED WITH US TO CHOOSE THE COLOR, WHICH WE LOVE. SOME TOUCH UPS WERE NOT COMPLETED, SOME CALLS NOT RETURNED, BUT THE OVERALL LOOK IS BEAUTIFUL. LOOKS LIKE NEW! SO, YES I WOULD HIRE HIM AGAIN. THE MATT FINISH IS BEAUTIFUL BUT MY DOG SCRATCHED IT UP IMMEDIATELY. TO DO IT OVER I WOULD GET THE STURDY FINISH.

Brian and Jeff did an awesome job on my floors. They were able to seamlessly match the old flooring with the new flooring, and were very helpful in recommending a stain that would blend well between the old and new and that would hide some of the imperfections of the old. I'd definitely use Select Grade again and would recommend them to anyone.

The "Select Grade" for this project is an "F". My wife and I selected Brian over a number of other contractors based upon the reviews on Angie's List and the fact that he owned his business and did not hire subcontractors. We thought that we had found someone who would provide quality work and was very detail-oriented but boy were we wrong. Our project consisted of installing new hardwood to connect our kitchen hardwood to our foyer's hardwood, replace carpet on stairs and upstairs hallway with hardwood, and sand all wood and stain a darker color. We thought that this would be a simple project for someone who claims to be a professional in this field but once again we were very wrong. I have attached a number of pictures showing the poor quality of this project. 1. The stair treads are multi-colored. We had chosen ebony as the stain color and you will see that some have the ebony look and some are red. No matter what kind of lighting hits the steps you can see that some of these are three shades different. We have even had visitors ask why we did not stain all of the steps the same color. 2. We had expected to have to touch-up our baseboards with some white paint but we did expect having to also repair damage to our drywall and door trim. 3. Somehow, he also managed to get stain on our bedroom carpets and splattered all over the back of our house's vinyl siding and patio. 4. The first floor stain is unevenly applied and some sections look like they have two coats and others only one. Brian uses machines to apply the stain and you can see where the machines put a heavier coat and there is about 2 inches all along the baseboards where the color is not as deep. If you are looking for a "professional" hardwood flooring refinishing/installation company look elsewhere. The pictures don't lie and this has been a true nightmare. The quality is so poor that we have a new company coming in to re-do the entire project excluding the installation.

Brian and his crew really knew their craft well. They used numerous machines to strip the old floori finish and continually sand it down to smoother and smoother levels. The job went a bit longer than originally planned, but I'd rather that than to have them cut corners and finish too quick, which they definitely did not do. Brian made sure that everything was completed to our satisfaction and even went above and beyond and helped fix a spot that was not his fault, just so the entire floor would look good.
Definitely would recommend him Select Grade Hardwood Flooring.
Brian and his staff were on time.(I was a little over 15 minutes lates because, due to their suggestion, I took my dog to be boarded and check-in was unexpectedly long). I had planned to be in the house the entire day, but received a call that my sister might be having a heart attack and I rushed out of the house a couple of hours later, leaving Brian and his crew open access to my home. Brian had said their hours were from 8:30-4:30. However, when one of my sisters drove past my house at 4:00ish, they were not there. That was okay, I have no problem with specialists I hired to leave early, provided I am charged fairly. The second and third days, I also spent most of my time in the hospital with my sister and, I coincidentally, had a pre-arranged procedure at the same time. Needless to say, I was under a lot of stress.
I had dreamed that I would have a flawless dining area, but that wasn't the case. Several of my walls were damaged by Brian and his crew. Some problem areas are smudges, in other areas, the paint is completely off the wall. When I pointed this out to Brian, he said, "well, that's why people shouldn't lay a new floor after they've painted." I agree with him, but I also think "people who lay floors shouldn't damage their customers' walls.
The whole purpose for ripping out the the plywood floor was so there would be a seamless transition when walking into the dining area from the hallway and kitchen. Something happened in cutting the kitchen rug that made it necessary to add a lip to the floor. And I was charged for it. Again, the agreement was I desired a seamless transition, or in other words, no lips.
The baseboards were replaced, but there are gaps between the boards and the walls. I was charged an extra $100 for placing the shoe moulding around the baseboards. There are huge gaps in some areas where the moulding doesn''t seem to fit properly. My dream of a beautiful dining area has been foiled by carelessness and no offer to try to fix the problems.
"Our goal is to give the best flooring project that we can on every project. We did a complete tearout of the subfloor on this project so that the new wood floor would sit flush with the existing. The Kitchen floor was sitting on the same subfloor we tore out. After the subfloor was out and the new wood installed. The Kitchen floor was taller that is why a strip was need not because of a mistake. If we didn't put a strip down it would have been a tripping hazard. The only way to get a seamless look she is talking about would be to tear out the kitchen floor as well. the new wood was perfect with the old ( which was the reason we tore out the plywood) When baseboards are painted white it is common practice for the painter to caulk them to the wall for a seamless look. When the baseboards are removed they will need to be caulked and painted again to achieve the same look. I told the member that before we took them off, not after. when we looked at the job they were not painted I told her to wait until the floor was done so she didn't have to work backwards. The plywood we tore out was underneath the walls and difficult to remove without damage. I told before we started that some paint touch ups are to expected. We did leave some smudges on the wall but a quick paint touch up and it will be fine. Nothing was damaged. When this type of demo project happens in a room that is completed painted there will almost always be some small touch ups. Which was the case hear. When the floor is coated we are done for the day. that was why we were gone before 4. After it is wet it has to dry. Please read all of our reviews.
This is my second review for this company. Last year (as reviewed on Angie's list) this company did the floors in our previous home.

We had our floors in our previous home done by this company last year and we were so impressed with the knowledge and expertise that they showed that when we were able to buy our "dream" Victorian home unexpectedly, we did not quote this out. We simply called to tell them to come do the floor.

The floor in our new home is Tiger Oak with a Walnut decorative inlay. If you know something about hardwood, Tiger Oak is not available anymore other than through salvage. So if you want to have it refinished, you have to make sure it is done right as you really can't replace mistakes with similar wood. To complicate matters, the inlay was laid with the grain in multiple directions.

The home we bought was built in 1899 and was neglected in the past several decades. The floors had rot and water damage, but were worth saving due to the rarity and beauty of the wood. Brian was honest with us in that the floors would need a special sander due to the opposing grain inlays and told us even if we did not choose his company, to make sure the company we did chose had the right equipment (and explained what that equipment was).

Because Tiger Oak was not readily available to repair the damage, Brian talked with us about how we could harvest strips from the back of closets to repair the more visible damaged areas. He could have charged us a massive premium to track down salvage wood, but offered us an affordable alternative instead.

The end result was wonderful. The damaged areas were repaired, the floors were brought back to their original splendor and we are pleased beyond what words could express.

If you have a tricky situation with your floors due to age or complications, Brian's expertise is well worth at least getting a quote from. He obviously knows his work and is an honest craftsman doing the work.

Brian and Adam were extremely professional, competent, and diligent in their work. The process took place across three days, and due to our tight schedule they fit us in in an extremely short time frame, even working on Saturday to finish the job. The floors look incredible, and there was absolutely zero dust from the sanding. They paid close attention to detail, fixing a few cracked boards and filling in some spaces where the wood had eroded. They took a floor that was in pretty rough shape, and transformed it. They also were friendly and personable, including helping to vacuum the first floor that had nothing to do with their project. Their price was spot on and I felt great paying it.
Brian, owner, and Adam, coworker, were professional, courteous, and qualified. The process took 3 days. The first was to sand the floor. Noisely but not messy. They cleaned as they worked.
The second day was to apply the stain. Smelly! I was able to walk on it in 2 hours. The color was perfect and the application was even.
The third day was for the top coat. I chose the satin finish and it is beautiful. I think it looks better than the original finish which was glossier.
Brian came back several days later because a small spot under a cupboard was missed.
The cost for a kitchen, family room, hall and closet was under $1300. Brian adjusted the price by 5% because i am an Angie's List member.
I will have them back in a few years to reseal the floor and keep it looking great.

In short, extremely well!!!! Brian and Adam spent the first week ripping up a subfloor in the dining / living rooms (where carpeting was). The decision was made to do this so that the new flooring would match the level of the existing flooring of the bedrooms and hallway. They were extremely careful to keep the dust and dirt to a minimum. After that period of destruct mode they were able to proceed with installing the new oak wood floors.
The new flooring was delivered a week prior to the actual work to ensure that the flooring would be at room temperature and ready for installation. They started the installation which included which also would include new baseboards that we wanted as well as new vent covers. We were thrilled with the initial installation results... the floor looked fantastic!! ... and they were not even done with the finishing work (sanding. staining and coating).
The next phase of the work was to sand the existing floors and from there sand the new floors to get everything perfect. Most of this work took a couple of days where the guys were again very careful to keep dust and dirt down to a minimum (successfully I might add). At this time I can assuredly say that they were always careful to cleanup every night after the days work was completed. This was much appreciated by me and my wife. We were now ready to pick out a stain. We were looking for something in the natural to light area. Brian applied some candidate stains on the actual wood flooring where my wife and I could evaluate the colors.
After choosing my wife's favorite (OK... I liked it too!) Brian and Adam proceeded to apply the stain. After the application he advised us on when it would be safe to walk over it (no socks... clean soled shoes). Again... the initial results were beautiful. With a day of drying Brian and Adam would next be ready to apply the protective coating to the flooring. We were again impressed with the initial results. We had gone with a satin finish and it was gorgeous.
The last portion of the work was finish details (baseboards installation and stain touchup). They again did a professional grade job in getting the trim done. We also had some followup work that they would do later (we wanted to have custom oak planks for the couple of stair steps that were in the installation area).
My wife's assessment of the work that Brian and Adam did: "I love it, love it, LOVE IT!!!" And from my point of view there is nothing more that I could ask from Select Grade than that ringing endorsement of the installation.
Highly recommended. A+++.
Thanks guys for the great work done in a timely fashion.
We definitely would call on Brian and Adam again!

We were very pleased with the outcome of our floors. What was unique in this circumstance is we had moved out and had relocated to another state. Brian kept us informed of the progress and made sure to contact us if any questions arose. Brian was very knowledgable and made sure decisions we made would result in the best final result. Everyone who has seen the finished floors are impressed. We highly recommend Brian and his company for anyone looking to have their wood floors redone.
