ServPro of Asheville West not only fails to live up to its own motto – “Like it never even happened” – but also leaves a mess in its wake. I am writing this review so that other potential customers are spared the disaster and anguish that my husband and I had to deal with after contracting with ServPro of Asheville West. Please note that ServPro is a franchise operation. It’s possible that other ServPro franchises might be run with more integrity. My comments apply only to ServPro of Asheville West. A small propane stove in our sunroom malfunctioned, leaving deposits of soot throughout our home, inside our air ducts, on any exposed fabrics and clothing. The sunroom is also home to our two cherished parrots – Josh and Rascal Bird – so a trustworthy, reliable vendor was critical to their future good health. We contracted with ServPro of Asheville West in December of 2016 to thoroughly clean the soot from all affected surfaces. The popcorn ceiling in the sunroom could not be salvaged and we agreed to have ServPro take the added step of smoothing the ceiling instead of restoring a popcorn surface. All exposed fabric was to be cleaned. Special care was to be taken to protect the birdcages from toxic chemicals and plaster dust. We were assured that the two cages would be covered with plastic to protect them from becoming contaminated. Exposed artwork throughout the house was sent out to be cleaned, as were numerous area rugs. Towels and sheets were to be laundered and returned. We and our parrots were due to leave the state at Christmas 2016 and planned to be gone through mid-April or so. We had been assured that a ServPro representative would coordinate with all outside vendors. So we decided to allow them access to the house while we were away, via a lock box on the front door. We explained that we were shutting the water off for our absence and told them how to turn it on and off as needed during the project. It was the ideal set up since we would not have to be around while the dusty ceiling remediation was being done. ServPro could set its own schedule and with four months at its disposal had more than enough time – you would think – to bring the job to a satisfactory conclusion. As these jobs go, this one was relatively small in scope. Only one floor was involved and we were told it would be done before we returned. We stayed in touch with ServPro throughout our absence. When we were getting ready to return, I inquired whether the work was complete. This was 4 months from the time that we hired the company. I was told “yes,” that all that they had to do was take the lock box off of the house. We told them we would be coming home. So we began our 2-day road trip home, with our two parrots in small travel cages in the back seat. Imagine our horror after we drove into the garage and entered the basement of our home. (The basement was never part of the project.) We could barely get into the basement because all of the furniture from our screened-in porch had been moved into the basement. A contractor had thought he had to work in the screened-in porch. Not so. Apparently no ServPro representative had shown him where he needed to be. Once he learned of his mistake, he proceeded upstairs to the sunroom where he was supposed to remove the popcorn ceiling, etc. He did not move anything back onto the porch, however. He DID use the bathroom in the basement TWICE. Apparently ServPro had neglected to tell him that the water had been shut off. So we had to clean up his mess as well. When we went upstairs, we were horrified to find all of the furniture from the sunroom shoved into the living room. A huge, heavy commercial fan was planted in the dining room. (When we told ServPro about it, they said that they had wondered what happened to that fan. Really? How do you misplace an expensive piece of equipment like that?) The sunroom, with the two bird cages, was completely inaccessible; it had been sealed off with plastic ostensibly to protect the rest of the house from the dust of the popcorn removal. (It didn’t work, though, as the entire house was covered in a thick film of dust.) One of the bird cages had been wrapped in plastic, as promised. The other was entirely exposed to the dust and had been used as a tray by the worker. Part of the cage was damaged, and the seed guards of a parrot playpen had been bent out of shape. This is what we walked into on our return home, after having been told that all they had to do was take the lockbox off. (We have photos to corroborate everything we found.) I wasn’t even sure we’d be able to stay in the house that night – there was dust everywhere. The beds were covered in plastic. All of our sheets and towels had been taken out for cleaning and were not there. “Like it never even happened?” No. It was far worse than what we had left behind. Moreover, when we got our sheets and towels back, we found that all of our towels had been laundered and dried with fabric softener, which ruins their future absorbency. So, “Beware of ServPro of Asheville West.” I cannot think of a number low enough to use to correctly rate their terrible performance (or lack thereof).
