I had to get the Better Business Bureau and after that they did a really good job.  My last experience with them was maybe October of last year.  Smart Builders do quality work overall and lalo is extremely knowledgeable about HVAC, and dealing with PG, and dealing with rebates.  Overall I would recommend them based on the quality of their work.  However, I would caution that when they are doing your job, they are already thinking about the next four or five jobs that they have in the queue.  When I had issues they were really slow to reply.  To the point I had to get the Better Business Bureau and the state contracting licensing board to elicit a response.  When we did connect, they indicated that they were having issues with their phone system.  However I did send messages to them via cell phone, regular phone, email and text without a response until the state licensing contractors got involved.  Once they did respond, they resolved the issues amicably and professionally.  One of my other frustrations is that there were days that I waited for them to show up, so either they didn't show up or they showed up late.  Once again, overall once they did show up, they did great work.  Because of that, I would recommend Smart Builders but you might need to observe their work to make sure they are doing the job that you expect. 

I can't say enough good things about SmartBuilders! From the estimating process all the way through the project, they were fantastic to work with. <br /> First, the estimating process was one of the most thorough I've ever seen. Trey spent a ton of time measuring and examining the house and then gave us a very thorough review of what he thought should be done. He was really pragmatic and honest about the cost vs. benefit of various options and actually recommended not running central heat into our upstairs addition because it could be more efficiently heated with an independent wall heater, saving us on both monthly costs and installation charges. I really appreciated this because they could have made quite a bit of money on that portion of the project if we had included central heat in there. Their quote was very accurate with the majority of changes coming from items that we added after the initial quote. They also did a walk through with the owner, construction manager, electrician and client consultant and myself to make sure we were all on the same page before the work started. <br /> The work they did was fantastic! They were on a tight timeline right around the holidays and they really went above and beyond to get everything finished up. When they started doing the electrical, we learned that our house had been built with some seriously over-engineered bracing systems so getting wires through the walls involved way more drilling than originally planned. Not only did they power through it, they didn't charge us extra for the extra work required. They did a great job of communicating the project status and checking in on details. <br /> They also went above and beyond in taking care of the house. They even refinished an area of the floor where the tape from the paper they had put down to protect the floors removed the finish (which was super old and starting to come up anyway) and cut replacement tiles to match original 1940's tile from my kitchen. The workers were all really great - incredibly knowledgeable (and willing to explain what they were doing), efficient, pleasant and really patient with my dog who was underfoot for part of the project. The work has been fabulous!! Our house is warm, quiet and all of the electrical is up to code and works way better than it did before (we actually have overhead lights and more than one outlet per room). They did a great job of thinking about how we would use the space and doing little things that really make a difference. <br /> This is a team and a company that really takes pride in their work and in making clients happy and it shows. They went above and beyond in making sure everything was perfect and that we were happy. A specific example that sums up our experience with them is how they handled a small issue. On the day the rough electrical was due for inspection the city building inspector cancelled the appointment and, due to the Christmas holiday, couldn't reschedule for several days later. Since we were on a pretty aggressive timeline, those lost days meant work wouldn't be completed by our original move-in date. It was completely out of their control but they bent over backwards to make it work for us. They offered to work around movers and all of our stuff and even to put us up in a hotel at their expense so we didn't have to live with all of the chaos for those few days. We didn't end up taking them up on the offer because it was easier to just shift the move date but I really appreciated how much they were willing to do (especially since the delay was not their fault). Amazing service and work! <br /> Although they have a specialization in energy efficient heating, they are general contractors who do a ton of other work. I had such a great experience that I'll be calling them for a kitchen remodel and some foundation work in the future. I seriously can't recommend them enough!! <br />

Smart Builders was very helpful in scheduling and working around other workers who were at the house.  The crew was very professional and efficient in its work, and we were completely comfortable in leaving them to do the job while we were gone. <br /> Also, Smart Builders uses a foam product that is optimal for as a fire barrier, and that does not have any odor 24 hours after application.  We are very happy with the work that Smart Builders did. <br />

their estimator was very thorough and responsive.  spent extra time to answer questions and even came back for a second visit when i wanted to revise the scope a bit.  the installers were very friendly, kept the place clean, and paid attention to details.  And they even stayed late to wait until i got home from work so that the house wouldn't be unlocked and at risk.

Terrific experience. After false starts with two other energy efficiency contractors--they got too busy or left the business--Lalo and his team at Smart Builders made out project not just manageable, but a relief. They took care of everything, were very careful and thorough about understanding our house and our desires, and even handled the paperwork for the energy upgrade rebate. They worked fast, and around our schedule, and the got the many jobs done. They were very responsive when I had concerns or complaints about the work, and saw us all the way through to the city inspectors signing off--including pretty substantial installation changes to satisfy local code, without complaining or charging more.
