My furnace stopped working in the middle of the night. They were able to come out early that morning and get my furnace working again. Very professional and answered questions that I had.

They have always been good and have great people that I feel comfortable having in my home. I can tell that they are honest and hard working. At one point, my daughter needed to have a repair on her A/C. Some other companies told her that it needed to be replaced but Smith & Sons was able to get it repaired and it has been working ever since.

Owner very personable and rates reasonable. I liked the interaction he know the science and engineering behind the equipment he was offering.
Technical service lacking knew how to do the job just didn't do it correctly the first time.
Did not offer energy efficiency. It was an emergency I went with the lowest bid.
"in this industry you can keep looking and always find a lower estimate, but at some point quality gets compromised. we have been in business 36 years and will never compromise price over quality."

It went well from start to finish. They were very responsive and, IMO, went above and beyond the call of duty, especially coming out again on a very hot Saturday, late in the day.
They were punctual, professional and efficient. All the traits a consumer looks for in a service provider.
It went very well! He explained what he was doing, and answered my questions. He was very pleasant (as is the staff at the office!) Even though the unit is very old he never pushed to have it replaced. He went step by step to figure out the problem. We did sign up for the cleaning program since he suggested it really needed a thorough cleaning.(You pay ahead for the air/heat cleaning plus 15% off parts if needed) We felt that was a good way to go! It usually takes 2-3 hours so he could not do it today, but a technician will be coming soon! We will also look into the air duct cleaning he suggested. Pretty sure flour, and some toys might be clogging up the works a bit!
From the first phone call to Amy who heard my story and turned me over to Tom, to the Thankyou letter I recieved from them for allowing them to serve me, it was true proffesionalism. A happy , neat and clean team with great talent, working hard to make it all happen for you. It ended with a hot tub bath on my part that night. You never know how important that hot water heater is until you lose it. I can't thank them enough.

Tom Sipes came to our house to assess our heating and air conditioning needs. He recommended the units that would efficiently heat and cool our home and provided a full cost to purchase and install both. A week later two installers arrived to install both units. They spent a full day installing and making fully operational. They worked very unobtrusively and cleaned up their work area when finished. The only disappointment was the vent coming out of the roof was noticeably crooked and we had to ask them to straighten it. I would have been more impressed with their attention to detail and customer satisfaction if they had noticed it and fixed it on their own. However, once we asked to have it adjusted they completed the task without any hesitation. Overall, I was very pleased with the installers work, as well as the recommendations made by Tom when he suggested the units needed.

During the recent hot weather streak, I turned on my AC for the first time this year only to find it blowing warm air. I prepared myself for the worst, knowing that the system was 14 years old.
The technician, Sean, arrived later that day and quickly found the problem. It was just a stuck fan on the AC unit. He quickly unjammed it and checked all the other functions of the system while on site. I then asked him if it was time to consider system replacement, and he told me this particular system would probably have about six more years of life. I was charged a very reasonable fee and he was on his way. The technician was clean, well-mannered, and respectful of my home.

I have used this company for about five years now. NEVER have I felt pressured into a sale or for a repair that was not needed. If they would have told me the system needed replaced, I would have gone with their recommendation.

Having worked in the plumbing division of corporate owned HVAC companies for the past 8 years, I had become accustomed to high pressure sales tactics from the technicians and that system replacement was the only option. I would caution other homeowners who read this to be leery of many of these HVAC companies out there, but not Smith and Son. Please stay privately owned and keep up the good work!

Russ came and checked to see what the problem was and then he had to order a new damper. When it came in he called and came an installed it right away.. I especially like that he kept everything cleaned up. Some times I spend an hour cleaning up after a service person has been to my home. But not this time!

We are finishing the attic in our 100-year-old house, and we hired Smith & Son's to run the HVAC lines to the attic. They said they could do the work in 2 days for $3,000. Two workers came on the appointed day and worked for 2 days, apparently without much incident. During their installation, they corrected minor flaws in our existing ductwork free of charge. They also did do some "collateral damage" to some plaster, but we knew this was possible and weren't too upset about it. At the end of the second day, they said they were completely finished but could not test the air flow to the attic b/c we had not yet drywalled and sealed it up. Over the course of the next two weeks we had to call them out twice to correct installation errors. While we would have preferred to have it right the first time, the errors were in "tricky" hard-to-detect locations, and they were prompt in their response. They also sent workers out at the end of the day so that I didn't have to take time off work.

It should also be noted that they provided us with an initial written estimate. Because our project was so tricky, they then brought out their expert installer Bill to re-examine. They verbally quoted a different scope of work and updated the cost on the written estimate but not the scope. A few months later when I hired them, the verbal estimate had been forgotten and they were prepared to perform per their written estimate. When I reminded them about the verbal quote, they were very flexible and agreed to perform the revised scope of work in exchange for a few small concessions. Ideally, I should have made sure the written quote had been properly adjusted. But since I did not, I appreciated their willingness to try to work per a 2 month old verbal commitment.

The bottom line is that despite the initial installation problems (we feel like virtually no contractor does things right the first time), overall we were provided with a quality service at a fair price.

They have exceptional customer service and were prompt to deal with and fix our issues at hand. Again, they went above and beyond and I will be calling Smith and Son in the future for ALL of our HVAC needs. Thanks, Smith & Son! Highly recommend this company - professional, reasonable, courteous and will take good care of you.

Beware, semi-rational rant to follow. Now is the time to bail out.

Disclaimer:
I don't like giving bad reviews (search my reviews) and this one is more for the industry (HVAC & gen'l appliance repair) than for this particular company.

I don't know how to put this but let me try. I'm not really happy with this service industry as a whole. Their pricing on parts and labor is so bloated it is not a wonder that more people are learning to do the work themselves. I have, as well. This company installed 2 Aprilaire WH humidifiers for my 2 separate furnaces in 2002. I do yearly maintenance on the systems. Last year I noticed one of my units was not not working. I ordered a new electrical cord (the old one was frayed after the unit fell off the furnace duct) and I replaced it myself, but this was apparently not the problem. This year I noticed the other unit was not working and decided that an $80 diagnosis fee was reasonable since I had 2 units on the fritz. I was able to get the tech to come out the same day I called. He found one unit had a dead blower fan. The other unit's fan was not coming on for one or 2 reasons. Either the motor fan was stuck against the motor housing which apparently had suffered a large crack after the unit fell, or the connector was not making contact with the connectee. The face of these units (the heavy part) is held on by plastic snaps (this needs to be rethought). He got this one going by jiggling the blower fan/housing &/or aligning the connection better, though it was a temp fix and I was advised to secure the unit to the furnace vent as the vibration of the misaligned fan might jiggle it loose. After he left, I used some bungee cords to do this. I was presented with a bill that came to about $162 and left with one still dead unit, and another that would need to be repaired further. I had an Angies list coupon that gave me a 10% discount, but not the $16 I expected, but $7 as it only applied to one of the charges (not the diagnosis fee). I asked 2 questions. Why the extra charge $68, and what would it cost to fix the 2 units. The extra charge was because in addition to diagnosis, he had fixed one unit. To fix the units correctly he would have to order the parts and then come back @ $150/hr labor + parts. I asked why, since I had told the co. what might be wrong with the units, they did not bring parts up front. I asked him if there would be a 'truck charge' if he came back and he said no. It's probably included in the $150/hr labor charge. I know the tech doesn't get this money, but who can afford to spend that kind of money for service? I found I could buy a brand new unit for $197 (delivered). I could replace one unit (easy) and use the motor from the replaced unit to fix the other (and have some extra parts for future repairs). I could also order just the parts for about $125. I would be interested to know what these parts would cost me through the HVAC dealer. I found this same unit on the web for about $400. I gladly paid for the diagnosis (grudgingly for the 'fix'), but to have them repair the units would make no sense economically. I had a discussion with a Co. rep and suggested they bring parts with them (@ these prices). She thought that had some merit. I ordered a complete new unit from a Co. on the web and will do the repair myself. My impression is that though they sell these units, they are not really set up to repair them efficiently, and the way they operate ends up costing more $$ for the consumer. Something's got to change or we will all become HVAC DIY'ers...
p.s monkeying with the drain tubes on these units left me with burn marks on both forearms (furnace hot air pipe is nearby). Real men expect this (real men are stupid) ..lol. Pictures upon request. I have medical insurance...Real men don't go to Dr.s... Cheers

After a bad experience with poor reliability of another brand, we selected Smith & Son after receiving prices from several better brand suppliers. Their price was competitive on Trane equipment which is highly rated?the only reason for a grade of B on the price is that there are cheaper brands available. The complexity of the installation was apparently under estimated since they had to return on a second day to finish. However, no short cuts were taken and the installation quality was first rate?better than the previous installation by a different contractor. Everyone with Smith & Son have been good to deal with from initial estimate to follow up with the office through installation with the technicians.

mMy boiler type furnace stopped heating the upstairs of my home. I called Smith and Sons and was politely greeted. I explained my issue and they scheduled a service call for Monday Morning between 830-9am. Russ showed up at 845 and walked me thru my system and how everything worked. He then showed me how to clear the vapor lock (air pocket). When we were opening and shutting the valve's a water leak started. Before Russ left all of the leaks had stopped. 15 minutes after Russ left the pressure relief valve started leaking again as well as another valve. I called Smith and Sons again and they had Russ call me. He called a place about he parts and called me right back. He was able to come back to my house that same day and install the pressure relief valve and make sure all of the other leaks had stopped. This company did a great job and you can tell by the professionalism of their service man Russ that they truly care about customer service. This companies info is now on my fridge. I now have a HVAC company to call.

They came out to install a brand new Honeywell generator. It was one a newer model. It required a new breaker box. They were not sure of how to install it property, so they took it upon themselves to hire an electrician to take care of the job. They paid them themselves. We are sure that they lost money on the job. They were courteous and apologetic. They worked so hard to make it work for us. They were very flexible when we decided that we needed for the unit to be in a different place than they planned to place it. They were super nice people to deal with. They were bound and determined to make it right.

"Thank you members for your kind words. We don't look at it as a loss, but as an investment in the education of our technician! We appreciate your kindness and patience and are thrilled that you are happy with your new generator. Best wishes."

Thanks to Angie's list we were able to chose Smith and Son Inc. from approximately three other companies in our area. The Smith and Son representative just made more sense than the representatives from the other companies. We liked the representative's approach. He pointed out options that were available explaining everything in full detail. He pointed out different things about the new gas furnaces and left it up to us as to what we thought would be best for our situation. We were thankful he had no high pressure tactics. We felt that the representative had our best interest in mind so we chose Smith and Son. Amy, who answers the phone at Smith and Son, was very helpful. We called back with some questions and we made a change to our order before the day of installation and Amy was very professional and cheerfully made the change to the order.
On the day of installation the installers arrived on time, went right to work. They were hard workers replacing the old furnace with the new. After that job was done they completed our order by replacing the old dryer vent with the new. The installers were friendly, courteous and professional. They left no mess and you could not have told that they had been here.
Our new furnace is working great as is the dryer vent. We are very pleased with the work done by Smith and Son, Inc We recommend them and would definitely use their services again.
