We called Southland Plumbing and Heating because our original garbage disposal stopped working. The 2 plumbers arrived, made an assessment, and then bought a new disposal at Home Depot for which we reimbursed them. At that point it took at least 3.5 hours for them to install, I watched them reading the manual intently and discussing the situation, working under the sink and then looking at the manual again, not looking at all confident. We paid them but then noticed the next day that it made a terrible sound when we turned it on. We called back and asked for a different plumber from Southland. They sent someone else who pulled a piece of plastic out of it that he said was supposed to have been removed at installation. We have used it very sparingly but 2.5 months later noted that water was pouring through the disposal under the sink. We called Southland back, and they sent the first plumber back. He blamed the problem on the "cheap" type of disposal (that he had originally bought himself), and explained to me that some of the rings and screws holding it in place weren't snug fitting, which I really think was due to improper installation to begin with.
In summary, if you are looking for professionals who are competent and efficient then these aren't your guys.

Now that I have all the details I will update this more accurately. My mom doesn't recall when she called, but it wasn't too long before they came, which was on Monday June 15th. They looked at 2 toilets and told her they needed parts, which they didn't have. They called on Thurs. 6/18 to say they got one part but the other was special order. My mom told them she would wait until they had both parts before coming out. 20 min later ( the same day) he called back and said they found the part at another store.

When they came out later that afternoon, they were there less than 30 min. Each toilet taking about 10 min. Her invoice was NOT itemized only the total amount due of $280.00!! She said that seemed awfully high and asked what everything costs? They told her " oh we just lump everything together". When she handed him a check made out to "Southland Plumbing and Heating", he asked if she could please make it out to Miriam Hernandez. My mom was a little intimated at that point and a bit flabbergasted at the large charge. She called me the next day after fuming about it more. We tried to stop the check, but they must have literally driven to the bank when they left her house.

My mom called and asked for an itemized bill. She called 3x. I called once. Then I Emailed them via Angies List when after a week she had not received anything. I got a response from someone identifying herself as Chris's wife, saying she had authority to run his business, I am not sure if his wife is Miriam Hernandez or not? She said that the customer signed an agreement for the charges. I told her my mom signed no such thing. When my mom gave me the original invoice it did state what parts they installed. I checked them out on Amazon. The parts cost 17.95 and 7.80. This is the response I got: " This was not a price I quoted most jobs are quoted by the techs, I will go ahead and review it with Chris. If so we will refund, your mother the reminder of what we believe is the correct".

Today my mom got the itemized invoice: $65 Service Call, $100 Parts, $125 Labor/"Drive Time" to locate the parts needed. The Original bill was $280, you do the math.

Further it states they drove 1 hr each for both parts, as they were both " special order" and dis-continued. Really, that's why they told my mom they had the one part and were just looking for the second, and 20 min later he called to say they found it. So if they had to drive 1 hr to get each part is that an expense my mom should pay for? Without agreeing to it, I think not.

I am going to go look at each part, get the model number and once and for all see how difficult getting those parts should be. They told my mom even though her toilet was American Standard, it was made in Mexico and therefore needed a special order part?

Much as I still think paying $100 for a valve and a flapper is a bit ridiculous, I'll just chalk it up to a lesson learned. But I am demanding a refund of $125 for their ridiculous "Drive Time" charge. The customer did not agree to pay that, and no wonder they did not list these charges on the original bill because my mom might be 80, but she's not an idiot. She would not have paid it.

I saw this company's ad on their window advertising a drain cleaning and camera inspection for $65. I had been needing to clean my main sewer every 6 months or because of roots, so I wanted a camera inspection to localize the problem and see how feasible a more permanent fix would be. I called to set up an appointment for this service, and the lady on the line sighed and complained that the ad was old, but she said,"Fine," and we scheduled the service for 6/9/15. No one showed at the scheduled time window. I called at the end of the time window and a different lady said they had an emergency call, and she had called and left me a message, but then she realized that they had written down my phone number incorrectly. The next day someone called to reschedule, and we did so for 6/12/15. 2 guys arrived on time. They were professional and very nice and cleaned a bunch of roots out of the sewer. During the service I asked them about the camera inspection and they said they were told only to clean out the line and that the camera was broken. They said they could schedule the camera inspection for a future date. The guy said that the camera inspection would be an additional $180 or so. I mentioned the advertisement, and he said there was new management or owners as of a couple months ago and they wouldn't do it for the $65. I objected, as the whole reason I went with this company was their advertised deal. This seemed like false advertisement. He said there was nothing he could do. I didn't argue with him because he clearly wasn't the guy making the decisions on this. I paid the $65 to be done with it and let him know I was dissatisfied. I won't use this company again because I only like to work with companies that are trustworthy. If they will not honor their advertised deals, it indicates a lack of integrity. In the future, I'll look for another company that stands by their word.
They were our THIRD plumber since the other two had outrageous quotes. They were the only company that was honest, responsive and timely. Everyone I talked to was awesome and the tech was jolly and even tolerated our crazy dogs. I highly recommend them!!
They came.
They snaked.
They cleared.
They cleaned.
They flushed.
They showed the sewer.
They made suggestions.
They cleaned up.
They left.
And the water ran happily to the ocean, through whatever pipes it took to get there.
We were told the job would take 4 hours and cost $2300. The job took less than 2 hours. There was one plumber and an assistant, not a plumber. The water heater is a cheap Rheem made in Mexico. I spoke to a friend, who said there's no way one can justify this cost. I called another company and they quoted $1800.
They claimed the high cost was due to carrying the old and new heaters up a flight of stairs. But that took all of ten minutes.
No itemized bill was received, of course.
These guys overcharge, at least they overcharged me. I would never use them again. And I would get competitive bids before considering them. I kick myself for not doing this beforehand.
Caveat emptor
My home is a 2 story single family detached structure built in 1946. The old galvanized water supply lines had been replaced in 1996 with copper. The existing master bath had one sink, one shower, a separate tub and toilet.
The new master bath now has two sinks on the same wall as the one original sink. Two shower-heads and one wand with three valves are now located in the same general shower location but on different walls. One large soak tub is installed in roughly the same location as the old tub. The toilet has been moved 13 feet into its own separate toilet room off the master bath. A gas line has been run to a bedroom direct vent gas fireplace.
I purchased the tub and shower valves, tub spout, shower-heads, sink faucets, shower drain, tub drain and sink drains. I also purchased all the fixtures.
I obtained three estimates for this plumbing job. The old bathroom was completely demolished down to the studs before the plumbers came in for estimates. Relocating the toilet was by far the item that caused the most concern among all the plumbers. For the whole job one estimate was $11,895 and the next estimate was $9,850. I verified that the Southland $7078.50 price included everything the others had included as in cast iron toilet drain for a quiet toilet flush, copper lines and proper vents. Southland plumbing also included help in setting the tub and connection of the tub drain in their price and the most expensive contractor did not include setting the tub in place and connecting it!
Southland plumbers arrived on time each day and worked quickly. I was coordinating my own sub-contractors and these guys made my life easy by having a crew available to be there on the days I needed them. They also put up with the questions I asked regarding slope and size of the new toilet line as well as sizing the gas-line to the fireplace. There were no extras charged.
The showers do not fluctuate in pressure or temperature when the toilet flushes. There is good pressure when both showers are running. The toilet drain running in the den ceiling downstairs cannot be heard when the toilet is flushed.
The service was fine. Two guys came out and it took two visits for them to do the job since they had to order parts. They did not do anything wrong, but I just didn't get a great impression about them. They did a good job cleaning up after they were done.

It is always a shock when a problem comes up that results in an unplanned expensive repair. So, even though we have lived across the street from a huge neighborhood eating ficus tree for 15 years, and have watched it tear up the street and destroy one neighbor's sewer connection, we were in denial.
Southland had been out the week before to clear my bathroom drain, but did not find a problem. The next week on the Friday of Labor Day Weekend, the problem had become obvious. Nothing was moving from the house to the city sewer.
Ruben and his partner, Ben, from Southland came out and cleared what they could to the sidewalk cleanout, They could only get a few feet into the street from there with the equipment they had. Ruben sent a crew the next day to dig an 11 foot deep pit around the cleanout so that they could access the connector line. They went in with a camera, then went to work with a jetter and a grinder, but it was slow going. They managed to get it to a point where the toilets were usable.
They returned on Tuesday to keep working and was clear that it would be a lot of work and that there was considerable damage to the line. Ruben carefully and patiently explained the options. If they could not get through to the saddle (the city connection), They would have to dig into the street, and to do that, they would have to get several permits and bring in heavy equipment.
If they could get through to the street, I could either stop there and hope it did not happen again for a while, or they could install a fiberglass liner ? a new pipe inside of the old pipe ? that would keep the roots from returning. Even though the liner would cost twice what it cost to clear the line, they offered a 50 year warranty.
They did, after a few days of constant work, get through to the city. I decided to go with the liner, and while I have no idea if this company will be around in 50 years, I am certain that as long as they are around, they will honor their promise.
I have some experience in construction and a lot of experience working with people. I was impressed with every person I dealt with from Southland, and with they way they did their work. Ruben did a great job of walking me through this process. He listed to and addressed my every concern. Special cred goes to Juan, the gentleman who singlehandedly dug and filled the 11 foot deep pit.
We had to reschedule 3 times, and they showed up very late (3 hours) when they finally arrived. They would not provide an estimate to my boyfriend who was the only one home at the time. All I needed was a new faucet installed, and they said it would be $844 for the faucet replacement (including the faucet). This was so ridiculous that we asked them to just leave.

"Dear Angie's List member, we do apologize for any lack of correspondence on our part. Unfortunately you are not within our work area and this caused a problem with our scheduling as you are located more than an hour away from our headquarters. We tried to accommodate you by going out to you despite the area conflict because you are a valued Angie's List client, but in the end the cost wasn't acceptable because of the high end faucet you requested. We sincerely hope everything worked out well for you because you are very nice and understanding person. We truly are sorry we couldn't meet your needs. -Southland Plumbing and Heating-"

Besides the fact that one of the plumbers left for a common part and didn't come back for over 3hrs, then dropped his screwdriver down the then fixed drain, had to undo repair to get it out. The job was completed to my satisfaction, was not over charged for 3hr absence and redo and they honored there Angie's list coupon. I would use again if they send out John who has done other work for me and did the qoute but not the other guy who supervised this job. I don't remember his name.
They were so on time for the initial meet, they got there before i did. They took a look, told me what i needed, and it was kinda steep. They were cool and helped me out on a couple things payment options wise. They came the next day. Job took 1 and a half days. They upgraded my garbage disposal as a bonus. All 4 people I dealt with were real nice and polite. All in all I was pretty happy with the experience.
