Speak Contracting Associates

I would not recommend Shannon Speak or use him again. I would give him 1 star for timeliness for the following reasons: He was supposed to start our garage build the end of August. He did not start our job until the end of September. He would show up for a day and then you wouldn’t see him for another week or two. Meanwhile, almost daily my husband would receive text messages from him saying when he would be at our job again and he wouldn’t show up. This went on and on. Pretty much he would just show up on the weekends to work on our garage. We had 2 custom made garage doors that cost over $10,000 that sat for so long under a tarp in our driveway that they got mildew and mold all over them. The one section of a garage door was also warped and needed to be replaced. Replacement cost was $1575 plus $320 installation fee. The contract we had with him had him installing both garage doors but we went ahead and hired someone else because he was taking so long. I would give him 2 stars for craftsmanship for the following reasons: We chose Shannon Speak because he had good reviews on Home Advisor and Angie’s list and he said he had worked with Hardi Plank siding. It seems difficult to find siding installers in Iowa that want to work with Hardi plank siding. It is used a lot in Atlanta were we moved from. He installed chipped and cracked siding. We did not have any of those issues when we had Hardi plank siding installed on our house in Atlanta. He left a huge gap between the siding and garage door opening that he caulked. It looks like my 5 year old grandson did the caulk job—it is terrible. My husband is going to need to remove it all and re-caulk that area. He sub contracted the roof job and that company did a terrible job installing the flashing. He never picked up the left over pallets of siding like the contract said he would. He said he was going to come pick it up about 4 weeks ago and it is still sitting in our driveway. We had to emphasize over and over to him that we did not want illegal immigrants doing any of the work because I have a problem with giving work to an illegal over an American or legal immigrant. I asked him to make sure anyone that worked on our garage had papers proving that were here to work legally. Because of this request we had to wait and wait to get our roof installed because he supposedly couldn’t find any crews with legal workers. We gave him names of 2 different companies that our neighbors recommended and low and behold he was able to find someone after all. It seems like the work he did at the end of the job was really sloppy. It seems like he was just worried about getting his last payment and was asking to get full payment the day before he finished. Ummm…..**** NO! When we gave him the last payment we took out the cost of replacing the ruined garage door section and installation. We are not the only ones that had problems with him finishing their jobs. My husband heard a voice message come over Shannon’s phone that said “get you’re a** over here and finish the job.” The garage build did not get finished until December. I would give him 1 star for professionalism for the following reasons: When we were upset with him the first time for him taking so long to start on our job I left a phone message where I asked him to refund the 1st downpayment minus the money he spent on supplies and we would just find someone else. He told us he wasn’t going to do that and that we could take him to court over it but it wasn’t that easy. He went into a**hole mode very quickly. I don’t feel he had any reason to be upset with us. We were the ones that had given him a deposit and had only seem some supplies show up and lot of promises that he was going to start that weren’t coming to forwishen. He also chewed me out for “talking bad about him” because when the company that he sub contracted to install the trusses finally showed up I said “it must be a Christmas miracle” that someone actually showed up and when the lead guy mentioned that it looked like the trusses had been laying in the grass for quite a while I told him that Shannon and I had already had words about that and that I was not happy about it. Shannon called me up and told him that I shouldn’t be talking bad about him because it might make others not want to work with him. It just seemed like he told many lies about why he wasn’t coming to the job after all. So very frustrating!

I am extremely happy with the work Mr. Speak has done. He went out of his way to make sure we where happy with everything. I can not comment on Mr. Speaks pricing because he was subcontracted. I have submitted a few before and after photos.

Service was excellent. He did exactly as he said he would. Found and fixed a few problems I hadn't even noticed and did it all for the agreed upon price. Would definitely use again if needed
