SKJ designed a beam replacement for our basement. They created an elegant solution that allowed us to reclaim 6" of headspace. This was a small job, but they treated it like a big job and we were very happy with all aspects of our interaction with this firm. We would definitely use them again and recommend them for a similar project.

When I talk to Stuart Jacobson, he seem very honest, we agree that one of his engeneers inspected a home we were buying, I explain to him that was easy to identify any structural problem because there were no walls or finishes, and the place was no more than 600 sf. This guy told me that it wouldn't be more than 600 (because they charge the travel time too), His ingeneer wasn't in the site no more than 1 hour. We give him a check of $500 and espect a return check with a remaining portion; instead we have a bill of $920.00 charging us even for the time they talk in their office (show it in their bill !) We are so disapointed.

"As usual, when a client complains about their bill, it is because they do not read the contract before signing it. All inspections are performed on an hourly fee basis and the time spent in telephone consultation (other than the initial telephone consultation, which is free), travel time to the site, the inspection time, preparation of a report that is customized for each project and review of the report by a senior engineer. Estimates of the time needed are provided upon request, but they are only estimates. Often, the problem is more than we were told on the phone. The $500 mentioned is a retainer against total invoice, not a maximum."

I had marked my request urgent and the reponse was the same day. MR Jacobson was knowlegeable and it was obvious experienced in dealing with older houses The paperwork was delivered in a timely matter . He was willing to listen which was very important to me.

Had major truss heaving that caused the drywall to crack in the corners. Needed an inspection to ensure no structural defects. Discussed with Stuart on the phone, negotiated a price and the engineer came out that week and prepared a report and action item list.

stuart was very professional and right to the point,which is what i was looking for,but also very pleasent to do buisness with and gave me a fair price for the work perfomed. After submitting a request for a structure engineer on the website I immediately received a call the next day. The structure engineer James Freely was prompt for his appointments which is rare for contractors. James Freely was very detailed and knowlegeable. My report was completed on the date it was promised. I was very satisfied with the service and would definitely use their sevices again.

It turned out my problem needed to be addressed by a civil engineer, but before determining this, Mr. Jacobson spent a good deal of time on the telephone discussing our problem and possible solutions. He gave me the name of a civil engineer whom we intend to use. I would recommend Stuart Jacobson for future structural problems based on the way he responded to my problem, knowing he would not be hired or involved in the work. I was impressed.

stuart jacobson gave no consideration to the fact that i was a home owner. he charged for phone calls and travel time @ 165.00/hr which is ok to do to a business with lots of $ - not so nice to home owners on a budget.

"As is often the case, the homeowner did not read the contract that she signed. Our contracts are written in layman's terms and our Scope of Basic Services includes telephone consultation. All inspection projects are hourly fee based; however, we provide estimates of our fee (based upon information provided on the telephone by the customer) when requested. The initial telephone consultation is free. The problem that we often encounter is that the damage we find is often more than the customer told us about and/or the investigation is more time-consuming due to actual site conditions, which are not known to us until we arrive at the site."
