Our primary need was to have the exterior of our 3,600 sq. ft., two-story house repainted. Nearly as important, however, was a thorough, hands-on inspection of the entire structure with repairs as necessary. It was clear from the outset that our project would require both painting and construction services. How much of the latter was initially unclear but some was a certainty and we suspected that additional might become necessary as the project proceeded. Despite this fact, we were decidedly unenthusiastic about hiring and coordinating two separate contractors. Rather, we searched for companies that would be equally proficient at both painting and construction. That proved to be a very short list and it is our firm opinion that Tenhulzen Painting & Construction sits at the top! OVERVIEW: • Tenhulzen Painting & Construction painted our “challenging” 3,600 sq. ft. home and did an amazing job! We are demanding, difficult to please consumers but we have only praise and accolades for the job they did! • During the prep and painting there were several areas of dry rot that were discovered. On each occasion, these were immediately and seamlessly addressed by Tenhulzen’s construction group. The communication and coordination between painting and construction was impressive. The repairs were performed efficiently and perfectly. It was precisely what we had sought and requested! We could not be happier with the outcome. • A few words that come to mind when thinking about Scott Tenhulzen and his employees: Professional, Organized, Proud, Meticulous, Integrity, Thorough, Skilled, Reliable, Personable. • Would we use Tenhulzen Painting & Construction again on another project? In a heartbeat. In fact, we will probably do so this spring for a construction project we are planning. • Would we recommend Tenhulzen Painting & Construction? Unequivocally, enthusiastically and without the slightest reservation DETAILS: The Boss Scott was not on site much. He entrusted the daily supervision to a bright and capable Team Leader—Matt Kahler. But I had a lengthy conversation with him during his initial visit and then frequent phone and email contact. He is an impressive man in many regards. Scott is very bright and articulate and easily shares his vast knowledge and experience. But what impressed me most was his character. It doesn’t take much contact with Scott to get a clear sense of his values: honesty, integrity, dependability, doing a job well. After observing and chatting with the crew that painted and repaired our house it became clear that he expects the same from his employees. The Crew There was nearly always a painting crew of five. Matt Kahler was the Team Leader. He organized, assigned daily tasks, did a bit of “quality control” supervision, and worked along with the others. Matt is very personable and capable. He did a nice job of coordinating all aspects of the project. The other members of the painting crew were: Charlie, Simeon, Bruce, and MacGyver. They were a delightful bunch, often joking and bantering back-and-forth! I visited with them daily over the course of three weeks and enjoyed it immensely. I missed them when they left! The construction work was done by Rich and Rodney--both very experienced and proficient. Their interface with the painting crew was seamless. Several times during the prep or painting a structural issue was discovered. Matt would call the construction side and soon thereafter Rich would appear. He would quickly determine what needed to be done. Materials would be purchased and the next day the repair would be completed in perfect coordination with the other work. Workmanship As indicated above, I was a more-or-less constant presence around the outside of the house so I saw first-hand the work that was done. I was impressed! I had no idea that so much preparation was required prior to painting. The attention to detail was stunning. I suspect that many companies do far less and/or do it far less well. It seems somewhat beyond the scope of this review to delineate the specifics of the preparation. Suffice to indicate that it was extensive and all completed with painstaking thoroughness. The actual painting was, of course, equally careful and thorough. Perhaps largely as a result of the meticulous prep the process appeared to go quite smoothly. On those few occasions where a specified area was judged unacceptable it was sanded and repainted without hesitation. The final result was gorgeous! Better than we anticipated! Work Ethic I have touched on this elsewhere. I’m sure this begins with Scott. The man is a machine. I don’t know when he sleeps. I would frequently receive responses to my emails that would show a “sent” time of 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. Working hard, long, and well is clearly a core value for Scott Tenhulzen and therefore the entirety of Tenhulzen Painting & Construction. Care & Clean Up Absolutely impeccable! We decided to use ½ of our double garage for staging. At the end of every day all materials and equipment were returned to this area. All of our extensive plantings and landscaping was carefully protected from ladders, footsteps and overspray. Paint chips and scrapings were gathered as much as possible. There was never a trace of stray paint left on any windows or surrounding surfaces. COST / VALUE: Tenhulzeen will never come in as the lowest bid. They provide a premium quality product and that will always be relatively expensive. But, in our opinion the value is excellent! The “benefit” is more than worth the expense.

Tenhulzen Painting was a pleasure to work with. The prep work before painting was extremely thorough, the new paint looks great and the communication during the project was very good during the entire process from bid to final walkthrough.

The project lead they assigned us, Rodney, worked with us efficiently, even as we expanded the scope of work - even with about 40% more work added on the fly, they finished ahead of schedule. Rodney is a master carpenter, knowledgeable about all aspects of construction, and detail-oriented, as is the owner of the company, Scott, and all the other employees and the trade subs. Rodney worked difficult aspects of remodeling an old house, meshing old with new, with attention, skill, and patience. This is a high quality operation. We just finished, and we couldn't be happier. While no remodel is "fun," they worked with us, and our cats (thanks, Rodney!) to make it as stress free as possible, even while we lived in the house during the major remodel. They were upfront about costs and worked with us to do a remodel we could afford, even as we added on more pieces. They aren't cheap, but the quality of their work is exceptional and so they are a bargain. We will certainly use Tenhulzen for further work, and highly recommend them.

We've owned several homes and had painting done by various contractors over the years. This was our best experience to date. Scott Tenhulzen did our bid and was very thorough. The price quoted was reasonable. We weren't looking for the cheapest bid -- we wanted a quality job for a fair price, and that's exactly what we got. The crew arrived on time every day, took great care to protect our home and was meticulous in the preparation work. This included sanding and scraping layers of old questionable-quality paint from the millwork and then filling defects with putty and re-sanding. The painting was completed on the agreed upon schedule. After completion, Scott scheduled a walk through with himself and his crew. In preparation, we marked any areas we thought needed attention with blue painter's tape. The job looked so good that we thought we might be getting overly picky. Imagine our surprise when Scott and crew arrived and looked the job over and Scott added MORE painter's tape on defects so minor we hadn't even noticed them. The crew fixed everything right then and there and we have a beautiful result. I'll definitely use Tenhulzen the next time we have a painting project.

Scott and his team are fantastic, and I recommend them without hesitation. We were very happy with their work last summer. All of Scott's crew was courteous and professional. I felt very comfortable with them being around my home for the duration of the project (around a week, I believe). Scott dropped by frequently to monitor the work and stayed close to the details. He communicated clearly and frequently with me so that I knew the status of the job.
On the south side of our house, we had a few siding boards that were split or badly bowed out. Scott's crew replaced these before they started the staining work. The new boards look perfect. Another provider had mentioned it would be difficult to find a match for our siding. Scott never mentioned this, and the match is great.
In addition to needing staining/painting for our whole house, we had a window that was damaged (frame was rotting), and it needed to be repaired/replaced. Scott had a window specialist on his team come to take a look. He identified that we had special custom windows from a local manufacturer, and we would be better off working directly with that manufacturer. I appreciated him being candid about this rather than trying to sell us something that may not be a good match.
One thing I particularly admire is how well Scott seems to treat his team members. The July week they worked at our house was really hot. Scott called me halfway through Friday and said that he was taking the entire company to the beach for a break. They had been working in the scorching heat all week, and everyone just needed a break. He apologized for any impact this might have for our project, but he said this was important for his crew. I really respected both the way that Scott communicated with me about this and how he takes care of his team.
We are likely to paint the interior of our house some time in the next few years. I plan to reach out to Tenhulzen painting at that time, as I'd be very happy to work with them again.
Overall, pretty good. The quality of the work was excellent, which, at the end of the day, is the most important part. There were some communication struggles, and according to a lot of folks I have talked to around here, they are pretty pricey; but you get what you pay for. They only use the highest quality paint, which I appreciate. The attention to detail was outstanding, which is important. They did their best to work around weather and a family crisis situation of ours that came up suddenly. They are extremely busy, so I would recommend contacting them early in the season, so they will have plenty of time / warm weather to do your (exterior) projects. Don't wait until the end of the season, as I learned the hard way. Again, excellent quality - would recommend if you are willing to spend a little extra to have it done right the first time.
It is obvious that Scott Tenhulzen, owner of Tenhulzen Painting takes pride in his company and the quality work preformed by his crew. Javier and Paul, who painted our house, were professional, friendly and very detailed. Much of the work completed on our home was trim work, which requires a steady hand with such precise work. This was preformed professionally. Javier painted our 20 year old garage doors with semi-gloss industrial enamel which looked so beautiful that our neighbors thought we had bought new metal doors. Excellent Work!!! We definitely recommend Tenhulzen Painting

Scott and his crew did an exceptional job from start to finish. When you first meet Scott you immediately know he is listening to what you have to say and wants to be successful in completing your project. He asks great questions and gives his professional wisdom to help you come to your own conclusions so that you really are partnering not just hiring which means the end result is one that both parties have agreed to instead of just one. In today's world that is unusual.

The team did a great job working around our family needs of kids and dogs and stayed on schedule. The team was respectful and professional. I felt comfortable leaving them in the house to run some errands which meant they were trustworthy.

Exceptional work and we would hire Tenhulzen again!

Scott Tenhulzen came to our house to assess the job and prepare a cost estimate. I'm a fussy customer. I told Scott that I was interested in a high quality paint job that will hold up over time. He said and quot;that's great, that's all we doand quot;. I wanted to see thorough prep work where all the cracks, holes, nail heads, etc were sealed with polyurethane caulk. Again, Scott said, that's the way we prefer to work. Polyurethane caulk is difficult to work with and it takes a week to dry before paint can be applied. Most other painters I talked to prefer latex caulk which is easy to work with and dries quickly. The difference is that on an external paint job, the latex caulk lasts about 2 years before failing. For polyurethane the lifespan is more like 25 years. In my view it is not cost-effective to pay for labor to apply cheap caulk and paint that will need rework in a couple of years time. Scott totally gets this.

As we walked around the house, I pointed out some items that needed some special attention. For example, there are two door jambs for which the paint has failed. The builder and two other painters were unable to get a proper coating on these door jambs. Scott suggested a technical solution involving some specialized prep and paint products. He also put forth an option to replace the door jambs. We went with the former. Scott pointed out many other areas that needed attention and proposed a solution for each. The estimate had a complete description of all the work to be performed and the materials to be used. The materials list included polyurethane caulk and high-end paint. It was on the expensive side but, again, I wasn't looking for a cheap paint job.

We accepted the proposal and Scott scheduled the work for mid-July per our request. The job had three phases. First was a thorough pressure wash of the entire house and about 3 days for things to completely dry. Then came the prep work which involved sanding, scraping, caulking, priming, and some minor wood repairs. The prep work took about 3 days and then a week for the polyurethane caulk to cure. The final phase was applying two coats of paint. That took another 3 or 4 days. It took almost 3 calendar weeks to complete the entire job. As I told Scott, my priority was the quality of the work. I didn't care how long it would take.

When they were at our house, we had between 2 and 5 guys (Tenhulzen employees) performing the work. The crew were absolutely great. They were polite, skilled, hard working, and had pride in their work. Being a fussy customer, I went out to check on things twice a day or so. Whenever I pointed out something they always had a can-do attitude and they always met or exceeded my expectations. They were careful with the trees and shrubs by the house, used drop cloths, and left the job site clean and neat at all times. Looking back on the project, I didn't need to be as involved. It turned out that both Scott and the team leader were also very fussy and serious about delivering a quality result.

So far it has been a few months since the project was completed and my house looks great. Overall I'm very happy with the work performed by Tenhulzen Painting, Inc.. They will be first on my list the next time I need some professional painting work to be done. I would absolutely recommend Tenhulzen to others. Great job Scott and crew. Thanks!

We have used Tenhulzen painting many times over the past 8-9 years for both interior and exterior painting and staining. We have always been very happy with their work and have used them for both small and larger scale projects. We have referred them to several friends and businesses as well, and they lived up to their recommendation. Scott (owner) is very thorough and professional during the bid process. His team are all very knowledgeable, skilled and they leave everything looking neat and clean at the end of each day. We are very comfortable having them work both inside and outside our home. They are a little more expensive than some other painting contractors out there, but their reliability, trustworthiness, quality and professionalism are worth it to us. We highly recommend Tenhulzen painting!
We had Tenhulzen prep and paint the exterior of our house. This as one of the most professional companies I've ever worked with. They were always punctual with clear communication on what as happening and when. This company is excellent! I am soooo pleased with the paint job and the attention to detail. We recently bought our home and wanted to modernize it. Our home now looks fantastic and we plan to use them for more interior and exterior painting in the future. Very nice people and a pleasure to work with. I love the fact that they take so much pride in their work. I recently had painting done from another company and had an entirely different experience. We purchased our new home while still living in California. Scott was extremely accommodating with the long distance and gave us bid that was broken down into 4 options. We initially decided to do a modest amount of work but decided before the work was to be started to do almost all of the work he bid. He got started immediately and within a day had substantial progress done. The attention to detail fixing holes and other imperfections as well as making the trim was fantastic. The interior of the house looked like a complete transformation. All of the work was fantastic and he came back after we moved in to make sure we were happy with the results. He fixed a couple of minor blemishes on the spot.

Tenhulzen Painting is one of the most professional companies I have every contracted with. Scott and his crew were punctual and always concerned that they were meeting our expectation. This was done throughout the entire process which took over three weeks to complete. We purchased this home knowing that we were going to do some remodeling and knowing that it would need a lot of work. The interior painting could not start until all of the wall paper had been removed (in some rooms the paper was three layers thick) and the walls prepared. Every door was removed and prepared for paint. All trim and door jams were prepared to glass like finish ready for paint. Once the painting began it was sprayed and back rolled to a beautiful finish. I can not say enough about the transformation that took place. Our house is now a home thanks to Scott Tenhulzen and his outstanding crew. Anyone seeking a professional painting company should look no further than Tenhulzen Painting.

We are in the process of selling our house. We needed to replace the siding on two chimney enclosures and under a garden window. This was done earlier in the week by a siding company. Finding a quality painter on short notice who was willing to take it on immediately was difficult. Scott was recommended to us by our real estate agent and he made an opening for us on the weekend. He was prompt on his estimate. He and his crew were prompt when starting the job. They were a delight to watch work. They were very efficient. No mess. No misses. Clean and crisp painting. By the time they were done, the only way you could tell they had been here was the nice new paint job.
