We used Thayer Construction for a complete renovation of our offices/restrooms at our distribution warehouse. It was a large project (5 offices and 4 restrooms) that required a lot of planning and communication. They were very responsive, honest and polite throughout the entire process. I would not hesitate to recommend them for any projects - big or small!

We ran into unexpected issues the entire way through. Each time we solved the problem and went to the next. Although it was much more extensive than I expected, the end result was amazing!

Negative reviews are never easy to write and when you've had an awful experience, you want to inform others but still refrain from a review filled with ranting and anger. My partner and I tried to gain a great relationship with Terry and Kristi Thayer through the building process. We were brand new home buyers and looked to the Thayers to guide us through the process of selecting features and finishes as experienced builders. The beginning was absolutely fantastic! They were extremely attentive with requests and everything was great. We initially trusted that they were capable of building multiple homes and taking on multiple projects. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Our initial home inspection was called off the morning of without any notice as the house wasn’t wired for electricity. After that, the closing was forced back repeatedly. Thankfully, they covered the costs of extending the closing date. Our lot contains an intermittent stream that was covered by a growth of bamboo. During the construction and lot preparation they removed all of this bamboo and provided the typical seed and straw preparation. Unfortunately this was repeatedly washed away by rain. They proposed sodding the back yard as a solution rather than reviewing the drainage problem. Part of the proposal was splitting the cost of the sod at $3,000. Instead, we spent $3,000 to have the issues fixed with a retaining wall and proper drain system. Thankfully the company we hired assessed the problem from the beginning and came up with a plan to address it. Two months into owning the house, our 30 day punch list hadn’t been addressed and our crawl space started to flood due to improper waterproofing of the foundation during construction, as well as a crushed foundation drain that was then covered with concrete. While the Thayers did try their best to alleviate the situation with a commercial dehumidifier underneath our house, it ran 24 hrs a day for months and didn’t solve the problem. After the dehumidifier was removed and months after the crawl space flooded, they finally remedied the issue by trenching up around our foundation on most sides and applying further waterproofing, and finally, a vapor barrier. During the construction phase, the tile work in the bathrooms looked like my partner and I did the job ourselves. Rather than call that out as unacceptable, they waited for us to view it and make that decision. They did agree that the work was sub-par and would have another craftsman remedy the work, the issue was that they thought it was acceptable in the first place. Throughout the process the Thayers have tried to fix these issues, but often it was just made worse. Our original floors warped prior to move in, so Thayers had them redone at their expense -- only the stains did not match the original flooring and the area not replaced was damaged during the process. They have since refinished the entire house but did not pull all of the appliances out. This now means that under our stove and refrigerator the old stain is still in place and will not match the new stain, as the new stain was not the original agreed upon color or finish. The point of this review is that Thayer Custom Homes doesn’t seem capable of accurate and timely communication and translating the agreed upon details into a finished product. They will make excuses such as “difficulty in finding trades people” or “unfortunate weather” but ultimately these are common problems for builders that they should be able to handle. We acknowledge that they attempted to make things right but it seems like every time they sent someone in here to fix an issue, the result often remedied part but not all of the problem. It seemed like we were left to manage the subcontractors and have to explain the situation rather than just provide access to them and the Thayer representative. Throughout the process the Thayers made it known that they have an ongoing commitment to their name as a builder and to provide a product they stand behind. Unfortunately we can’t agree with this as they seem to preoccupied with the newest projects rather than committing to getting the existing ones correct. This was our very first house together, as well as on our own. we wish we had the chance to start over again and take a different path. If we could, we would have never done business with Thayer Custom Homes. This entire experience of buying our first home with them has been nothing but frustration with additional money spent by us afterwards to fix issues. If stars are given, we give 2 out of 5 since remediation was made. We won't beat around the bush: this was a good experience until someone on their end lost control of the situation and failed to keep us updated and make us a priority. That's not good service and makes it obvious when money is the only thing that matters. We all learn from mistakes, and I'm from the school that says people get better as they go. We hope this is the case in this situation, but given that it is a year later and still having issues, we would be hard pressed to say this is the case.

Completely gutted the master bathroom, getting rid of a small shower, Jacuzzi tub and a bay window. Rebuilt the wall where the bay window was which is now completely tiled in travertine tile and added 3 transom windows. This included matching the exterior hardiplank siding and painting it. Installed a 48" knee wall with frameless glass above it. We wanted an open doorless shower entry. Also included a bench seat. They installed a rain head shower head as well as a hand-held shower head on a slide bar. Included was a curved grab bar. They also installed two whisper quiet ceiling exhaust fans and two overhead lights in the shower on a dimmer switch. The L-shaped vanities were custom made from birch as well as a 90" tall matching tower which holds linens, etc. Two undermount porcelain sinks and granite countertops which matched the top of the bench seat in the shower. We chose a wide slate porcelain floor for the bathroom and toilet room which looks like hardwood. They also moved plumbing and electrical to accommodate the new layout. We added a chandelier in the entryway between the two closets into the bathroom.
Working with Terry Thayer and his crew was a delight. Especially since it was all being done through the holidays, it was extra stressful. Completion was 8 weeks and finished the week of Christmas. From start (design) to finish (paint), it went so smoothly. We had a detailed daily calendar which told what work was being done on any given day and who was performing it. Terry's project manager came to introduce every contractor the morning they arrived. Everyone who worked on our project was accommodating working around our schedule. We couldn't have wished for nicer people to work with. Their work is outstanding. They were all extremely knowledgeable about their craft and the results surely showed. Terry was available 24/7 by phone or email. His response was almost instantaneous. He was on top of everything and always answered our questions and concerns immediately. It is our dream bathroom. It has exceeded our expectations and then some.
We would recommend and use Thayer Customer Homes & Remodeling in a heartbeat. They are that wonderful. A truly pleasant experience.
