Eldridge did not finish the job. We were continually reminded that he should have charged more. After paying $13,000 he never finished, had some fresh out of high school kids bung it up on the last days with promises he’d be back to finish but have not seen him since. (3 years). I’ve now hired someone to finish the work he was paid to do. He was always making excuses like I’m going ...... (sailboating etc) and asked me not to put a negative review. Well, enough is enough. Don’t make my mistake.

Best job ever done. The dedication, professionalism and the quality of the work, the paint product as well as the work ethics were the best I ever experienced. Attention to details and a clean workspace while working and after the work of the day was done are important to point out. We could not be happier and have recommended Abstract Painting already to neighbors and friends (they came recommended to us to) and new contracts have been already written!! Well earned new business. We would employ this company and Eldridge, Mark and Irwin and their team anytime again!

The owner, Eldridge Rawls, visited the property in late July and provided a written estimate by email including the cost of and the timeframe for completing the work. He agreed to meet our desired completion date of Oct. 15. He outlined 4-5 days of carpentry work to be done first, overseen and participated in by him, followed by painting estimated to take 10-14 days, weather dependent. We anticipated a start time of mid to late Sept. to meet the completion deadline. At 8:30am on Aug. 29, just as we were preparing to leave for the day, Rawls showed up unannounced (no phone call or email) with a van load of subcontracted workers from Unlimited Painting Company to pressure wash the house that day and start painting the next day. No carpentry work, which involved significant wood replacement, had been done. When we pointed this out, Rawls said that the carpenters and painters could work simultaneously, something that proved not to be true. Carpentry was to begin the next day. The subcontracted carpenter failed do any work the first 2 days but he brought some of the materials needed although he had less than a third of the materials required. He called several times while "looking for supplies" and asked us to provide a credit card number to Lowes and another supplier, something we had not agreed to in the contract but we did do. Late in day 3 of the painters working, the carpenter showed up but left stating that he could not work while the painters were here. Therefore, to accommodate him, the painters stayed very late on a Friday evening, abandoned working on Sat. so the carpenter could have all that day to do woodwork. We cancelled plans to be away and stayed home that day but the carpenter never showed up We demanded of Rawls that he find someone else. He became angry and defensive but agreed to find someone else. By the time he found another carpenter, the painters had completed the first coat of paint. When the new carpenter came, we asked for a list of materials needed, went out on our own, purchased them and brought them to him. He worked long hours for 4 days, completed all the work, and did an excellent job. Although Rawls' proposal stated that he (Rawls) would assist the carpenter, he did not but THE OWNER did! From the beginning, we found Rawls to be uninvolved, irresponsible, unreliable and very unprofessional. During the few times he was here, he complained that he was "not a contractor" despite subcontracting all the work. He was particularly angry one evening when we insisted that a walkboard, which covered our windows and door, be taken down at least for the weekend, as there was no intention of anyone using it. He had to bring someone out to help him do it himself and loudly expressed his displeasure. In summary, Mr Rawls was totally incompetent as a contractor. Fortunately, the work done by the 2 subcontractors, Unlimited Painting and carpenter Dan Haas, offset some of the nightmare chaos, unnecessary inconveniences, and frustration inflicted on us as owners (and probably on the subcontractors as well) by Eldridge Rawls. Abstract Painting Company is not a company. It is simply one man subcontracting jobs. One would do well to contact a real painting company (Unlimited Painting is excellent to work with) who actually has its own painters rather than waste money on someone who invests nothing, is not dependable, resents the expectation that he assume responsibility, but simply takes money from the contract.
Response from The Abstract Painting Company
"In July with so much rain I had 4 jobs still un finished . We tried to get started on some new power washing work and then put my crew on to a new start while I finished the other jobs . I knew that starting in September would not work due to the back up of work . I use sub contractors and it has never been a problem before . Subs have more at stake in the work quality because they want to keep working as a group rather than an hourly worker who tends to feel isolated. My first carpenter who I used before had problems with the job so I let him go and brought in Dan Haas to do the work . He did the job very well . There was very little delay wile changing carpenters. The owners really liked his work . They also liked how the paint job was done. I had a brief period of time to get all my men together to do this complicated job. I am 65 years old and I am not doing the kind of labor I used to do so I hire others to do a lot of the work . Ther was no extra charge for carpentry . The owner paid Dan directly. A job this big has problems within it but we did get the job done on time with some rain delays . I paint 50 to 60 homes a year over the last 12 years here in Asheville. I have only had 3 bad reviews in this period of time. Me and the client did not get along ,I am aware of that so I let my men do the talking with there hard work . The client apologised to me once for how his wife yelled at me do to work timing . I felt nervous there , just bad chemistry I guess. I am sorry for any disruption in there life but major house painting and repairs is not easy . Its not like ordering a package from Amazon. I will continue to serve Asheville as best I can an continue to use my good working men who believe in me. This review shook me deeply and I am still feeling bad about it . I will work harder to try an address my timing and communication problems with each new job."

Great. The quote was in the middle. The project started quickly. There was a crew working every day that wasn't raining. They pressure washed the house, caulked extensively, re-nailed a few boards, and put on two coats of stain. They left the site clean. Will definitely hire again when we need painting.

The painting was done very well, however, they were in too much of a hurry to leave and left a few small things unfinished. When we tried calling them back to get them to come back and complete those things, we received no response. Also, we requested to use a specific deck sealant, but they did not. The sealant had since worn off and we have to redo the whole thing.

Eldridge and his crew did a great job for us, completely repainting our house and a very large deck. Eldridge is not only an artist, he is a skilled carpenter and was able to diagnose and fix a leak on a chimney, as well as replace all wood and trim so that it looked as good as new. He was very patient in allowing us to take our time to select just the right colors, and he even custom mixed a wonderful slate gray ("Eldridge Gray") that now covers the deck. There were some rain delays, but Eldridge was there every time that it was possible to work on the house. He was always on site supervising his workers. We are very happy with Eldridge as both a painter and a carpenter, and would hire him without hesitation in the future! Thanks, Eldridge for the wonderful result on our home!

Eldridge and his team were fantastic. From my first call with Eldridge, he was responsive, helpful, clear, and reliable. I loved that he and his team leader, Mike, helped me choose the colors that were going to make me happiest long-term. Their aesthetic sense is impeccable--they've been doing this a long time! The team showed up on time, worked efficiently, and were truly delightful to be around. They moved the furniture off of our deck and were super nice about it! The team made minor repairs as part of the work, and Eldridge has been attentive in following up about the items that were beyond the scope of the work we hired him to do. I would definitely hire them again. Their expertise and professionalism, plus just being nice to have around, were worth at least what we paid!

This is a revision of an earlier review in which I gave this company an 'A'. That grade was appropriate to the job done by the work crew of the company. However, the owner never had them come back to finish the work for which they were contracted, despite several attempts to schedule them for the finishing work. In one of those contacts, the owner indicated that his foreman (In my opinion: the real force behind the good work that was done) was leaving the company. The owner also kept us on the hook regarding a further job that the company was to provide until, 5 months later, admitting that they probably wouldn't be able to do that job. Part of the reason for not being able to do so, allegedly, was the departure of the aforementioned foreman. I would not hire this company again!!
Response from The Abstract Painting Company
"I am very sorry for this client's un happiness. We completed the job as planed on time in the cold season making it hard to re schedule. We replaced three siding boards that I had milled at a saw mill. I did not charge the owner for that work and it was an extra on the contract. I charge by the hour for wood working outside the painting contract. I replaced all the siding boards and primed them with primer . I did not get back to put the top coat on the new boards and that is my fault. The other part of the job has to do with replacing some columns on the front porch with new decorative ones . I thought maybe I could do it but found out it was beyond my job skills. I found a good local contractor to do the job an he agreed to do it. His name is Joe Swiger 30 years experiance. We do small repairs if we can or we try to help owners fined a contractor. I will do a better job in the future to respond more often with my clients."

Love these guys! Had no trouble scheduling the job - Eldridge fit me in before Thanksgiving, and they finished the whole thing in two stages - one day for the power wash, three days for repair and painting. Excellent work.

Very professional. Punctual, thorough, communicative. Worked hard and got the job done in a timely manner. Went out of their way to manage related problems -- e.g. replacing siding that needed repair, cleaned up after the work was done. Definitely would hire them again.

Eldridge, Ryan, & Crew did an awesome job. Very professional as well as thorough work. Our house has been transformed. This house was probably in need of a good stain when we bought it 5 years ago. I would recommend Abstract Painting to all. A very professional job that they did working around typical end of October weather. The "before" Picture I'm posting is after the power washing and that made our house look much better than when the job started.

It went great! Eldridge and crew went the extra mile. They caulked all the MANY open cracks around the whole house -- even though that required about 14 tubes of caulk -- unstuck windows that had been stuck closed for years, did a little carpentry work where needed, and rehung an outside door, in addition to doing a great job painting the whole exterior and doors and trim. I could tell they really care about their work.

The job was completed in two weeks. The crew showed up every day, on time and ready to work. The crew put in a full day, each day and full time. When the weather permitted the crew was split with two members working outside pressure washing and painting and two to three members working on the interior. At the end of each day all equipment and drop cloths were picked up and the interior was vacuumed and put back in order. The crew was professional at all times. I have received many favorable comments from neighbors and realtors and have passed out cards to those who have requested referrals.

The painters did an excellent job, plus were polite, thoughtful and professional. They gave a few days notice when they would be coming. We were impressed with how carefully they prepared the surfaces for painting. They checked in frequently to see how we thought things were going. They were friendly and delightful to have around. It is hard to imagine a more positive experience than the one we had!

The guys were willing to write a long list of all the things I've neglected to repair or replace in the 31 years since my house was built on this incredibly STEEP lot! This included both minor & moderate sheet rock repairs, kitchen walls, cabinets, drawers and some importants items in my bathrooms. They repaired some issues with my motion detectors and other electrical work as well.
The cleanup was excellent and I would highly recommend Abstract Painting to anyone considering complete house restoration & minor to moderate carpentry and home repairs.
I was also impressed with their two young helpers as well. I trusted these guys with my house keys for 2 or more weeks!
Thank you.....

Eldridge is a great guy to work with! He has an easy going disposition but is committed to completing the job in a timely manner. After all, he doesn't get paid until the job is complete. He also was really helpful in selecting colors. And, he sticks by his price commitment. No trying to add work and charges...he bid it as a complete job on the front end...and then went to work. I highly recommend ABSTRACT PAINTING for any job you may have.

They showed up when promised with a crew that was ready to work. They were courteous and professional. They got the job done at a workmanlike pace and the results are excellent! I do most of the maintenance and improvement on my houses usually because my results are much better than the people I have hired can do. This time however, Abstract Painting did way better than I could ever do.

We had dinner on the porch a week ago and one of the guests who had never seen our house before asked out of the blue, "who painted your house?". It looks that good.
