About us

Community Involvement A big part of The Backyard Depot is getting involved in the community and helping those in need. We feel this speaks to the character of our company, employees and vendors we do business with. When ABC’s Extreme Makeover came to Raleigh, we were selected to install a fence for the Riggins family. We have worked to develop an honest, reputable company and feel that we were rewarded by being chosen to participate in the project. In July 2011 we were again asked to provide the fence and installation for another Extreme Makeover build in Fayetteville, NC. Recently, we were asked to set up a fence for a scene for the movie Lao Warrior. The movie details some of the life struggles of Kenji from being bullied and the fear of death as a child during the Vietnam War to the horrific dealing of human trafficking. It’s due out in 2014 and we’re thrilled to have played a small part in it. In addition to Extreme Makeover and Lao Warrior, we also donated fences and installation to other local projects including Building Together Ministries in Raleigh, Duke Children’s Miracle Home in Durham, and to a family in Raleigh in February 2008 who rebuilt their home after a house fire that took the fathers’ life. Honest, Reputable & Reliable At The Backyard Depot, we’re proud of our business. We’re happy with how fortunate we’ve been over the years and what we’ve become. We’re honest, reputable and reliable. We’re NOT perfect but we do whatever we can to satisfy our customers. We look forward to hearing from you and hope you give us the chance to make you one of our many happy customers.

While there were no issues regarding the price or punctuality at first my concern and low scores are reflecting the warranty follow ups. The first problem occurred regarding the gates not closing properly due to settling and adjustments. After I gave a low scores due to no call back Mark Campbell contacted me after several calls and fixed the problem. Then I deleted the negative score. This August I noted that some fanciest started to lean, worrying me that the whole fence might tip over. After s several messages and calls, I did speak with Mark who promised to take a look and asked me to send him a picture. I did this on Sept 4! To this day, Oct 2, I did not have a call back from him ( after 5 calls and messages) or came out to at least look at the problem. To say that I am VERY disappointed is an understatement! In addition, their phone number 919-787-1880 has been disconnected!

It went very well. Guys arrived on time, very professional. My fenced looks fantastic. If I ever need fencing work again, these will be the only people I call.

The estimate process back in March 2017 was fine. Guy showed up on time and estimate was given in a timely fashion. We were told in advance that they were several weeks out with the schedule and that once we accepted and signed a contract in May, that we would be scheduled for some time in June. June came and went, no call. I contacted them via email the first part of July and was told "someone would be there today" which for us is unacceptable. We have dogs, my husband needed to install a temporary fence. We require at least a day or two notice for that. So we agreed on July 17th. We got up early on the 17th and no call, no repairman. I called the owner around 10am and got a message saying they were on vacation and that the business was basically closed, that no calls would be returned until July 24th. Also, the voice mail said they'd been having email problems. We had not been notified of any cancellation nor had we been notified of the time to expect the repairman on the 17th. So at that point, we figured nobody was going to show up and went on to do other things as my husband had changed his work schedule, we had to make the most of time. Then a guy showed up at 11am. While we are thankful they guy showed up, we are not impressed with the level of communication from the owner/manager. The repairman, Calvin, he was wonderful though. He did very good work and we are satisfied with the completed job.

Fence was to go on a sloped yard and was through a wooded area that had some obstacles. Mark's team was able to avoid obstacles and build the fence per our discussed plan. Project came out looking great. Very easy to work with.

1, The project start was delayed due to a mixup in getting the materials. 2. After the project was complete I had to clean up about 9 piles of dirt sitting on the grass. 3. Also the connecting rods between the poles at the top were not very even. The B grade is based on items 2 and 3.

Very well. Because they are very good they are busy, so we found ourselves waiting for a response at times; however the quality of the job was worth the wait.

Our experience with the Backyard Depot has be wonderful, They came out and did an estimate, They were one of the 3 companies we had chosen for estimates. We went with the Backyard depot because they quoted us the lowest price. The guys that came out to install it were prompt and courteous, they removed the old fence and put the posts up the same day. Next they the came out and finished up the fence. It was a fast and easy. Will definitely be using them again to finish off our fence installation.

We are extremely satisfied with the work done. The workers were extremely professional and paid close attention to every detail. The fence is absolutely beautiful and we have received many compliments from our friends and neighbors. I would definitely hire them again for any future projects.

These guys were great! While they were the lowest bid of three I got, in no way was the work inferior. They scheduled the work fairly quickly and took just a couple of days to do it all, and this was no small job! Brush, terrain that was hard in places and often not level. When it was done I was very pleased with the quality and the price. I highly recommend them.
It took over a week to get a call back simply asking for an updated quote so I could get the job scheduled. Mark had quoted the job in Oct, 2013 but then it was decided to not install the fence at that time. Once I received the updated quote I immediately signed the Purchase Agreement and sent it by fax to Mark. I asked that it be done as soon as possible. A few days later, on Monday, March 21, 2016 I received a phone message at 2:03pm that he had a crew that he just sent to the house. I returned the call to Mark at 2:23pm and told him I would be at the house by 2:45. He said very likely the crew just arrived at my house where no one was present. When I arrived to the house I found that all the posts had already been set in concrete. Obviously, they had arrived much earlier than I was told over the phone. Also, I had informed Mark in earlier discussions that I would meet the crew if he would call me and give me 30 to 45 minute notice and instruct them where I wanted to gate. They had already set the posts for the gate and it was not where I preferred but accepted it. I noticed a thick covering of leaves over a 10' section of where the fence would go so I got a rake and shovel and cleared the leaves and leaned the tools against a picnic table in the yard. When I saw them starting to stretch the chain link I questioned it for I was always told that the concrete should cure for a minimum of 24 hours unless they used the more expensive quick cure concrete which they did not. The bags they used were the standard concrete mix which sets in 45 minutes but takes time to cure and reach its maximum hardness and strength. They ignored me and said this was not a problem. They continued to get the chain link fencing and place in along the posts. They also had a 10' section where they were to replace the 3' gate with a 4' gate which required moving a post and restretching the chain link. I asked if they intended to complete the job that day and was told yes. I told them I would go to my home in Cary and be back in 45 minutes. When I returned they were gone, my rake was still at the site but my shovel was mistakenly taken by them. On the 10' section where they replaced the 3' gate with a 4' gate and restricted the chain link the end post that was present was not secure and needed to be reset in concrete or the post needed to be replaced. This was not done and they stretched the chain link between one secured post and one that was not. I was told by Mark that I was to give them a check when the job was complete. Since they were gone when I returned I could not do so, which I would not have unless they reworked the 10' section and secured the post prior to stretching the chain link. This crew was only concerned about getting the job done as fast as possible and they totally ignored the customer and quality of their work. I called Mark and left a phone message that I was not happy with the work and had questions about the concrete not being allowed to cure prior to stretching the wire, concerns about the location of the gate, the lack of quality work on the 10' section and the missing shovel. I asked Mark to call me so we could work through this so I could pay him. I left two phone messages over the week and sent one detailed e-mail. It has now been 5 days without a call back. I did try to move the posts the next day and they appeared to be solid with the one exception. I would have thought that Mark or another employee would have given me a call within 24 hours of my first message in an effort to work through the issues. My guess is that Mark did not normally use this same crew for I doubt that his company would have had so many "A" ratings. What surprises me is that he has not called me as of this writing. Assuming he has no interest to call, I went on and mailed him a check today for the full amount less $25 for the missing shovel and $150 to have someone else come out and redue the 10' section. A simple phone call by Mark and a trip to the house by a crew could have resolved the problem quickly other than my over all reservations about the quality of work this particular crew did and their lack of any respect to the customer.
After a failed attempt to get another fence company to install (the company incorrectly placed a footer for post in a walkway, then simply disappeared), I contacted a number of companies to take a look at fixing what was done wrong and actually install my fence...a total of seven companies came by and gave me estimates. The Backyard Depot wasn't the cheapest, but when I met Mark, he was extremely informative, transparent on the costs, and upfront about scheduling. In addition, checking on the previous work his company has done, gave me confidence to move forward with him.
So, I contacted Mark and let him know that I'd like to hire his company. Unfortunately that was right before Christmas--the holidays, as well as uncooperative weather impacted his schedule, and pushed back my installation date by two weeks...then continued bad weather (including snow/sleet/ice) hit after his guys got started. The actual installation team lead by Wayne were extremely professional and took the time out (before they started) to go over what I wanted, along with some suggestions. Although the install time took about a week, the *actual* time (when you take time out for inclimate weather) was only three days--including removing the existing fence, installing the posts (and letting the concrete footers set), then putting up the actual fence boards. There were a couple of minor issues that the team quickly and effectively resolved based on some concerns I had.
The only negative I can come up with was the fact that there was a bit of a delay in communications between myself, Mark, and the on-site team (Wayne). Truth be told, this may have been mostly due to the fact that things were a bit hectic at that time as the company was attempting to deal with the weather's impact on their schedule...and in the end, all communications were eventually answered (even if some of it was a little after the fact). Knowing now the quality of work that Mark and team does, this concern would not at all impact my willingness to hire him and his company again.
The end result is something I'm extremely pleased with. I'd happily recommend Mark and team to others, and the next time I buy a house or need a fence repair, I'll know who to call.
We purchased our home which had a very small fenced in area but a lot of room to expand the fence. I had inquired about extending the fence originally with Lowe's. I didn't see the point in pulling out all of the old fence and putting in a new one (wood picketed), so I asked Lowe's if they could use the materials we have and just find something similar. They tried really hard to convince me I needed to throw out the whole thing and start fresh, quoted almost twice the price, said if I insisted I keep the old fence they couldn't match it and wouldn't be able to cover it under their warranty. I looked up backyard depot on Angie's List and they came out, took a look and said no problem, we'll match the old fence. They had it up in a day for half the price. I am looking to extend our deck and will be calling on them shortly for that too!
We were delayed originally because of bad weather. Once the guys got here they dug holes for the posts and installed posts and concrete the first day. They came back the next day to install the fence. The guys were professional, they did a great job. They made sure not to damage my yard their machinery, and they cleaned up all the debris once they were done.
If I ever need a fence again, I would be sure to use their services again. I highly recommend them.
I took ownership of a home with a fence that was leaning significantly over the property line. Backyard Depot poured 5 new footings for 5 of my fence posts to straighten up the fence. The group was quick to quote, repair, and invoice. They were clean and efficient on the day of the job as well.

Mark was on time to visit the site and give the estimate. The price was good and because it was a small, straightforward project, he was able to quickly work us into the schedule. The crew asked appropriate questions before getting started and left no debris when they were done.
The crew completed an addition /replacement of a chicken wire fence. Their quote was the lowest by 25%. The work was completed as stipulated on time. The area was cleaned afterwards. No issue whatsoever! I can recommend this company to others.
