I had two projects I wanted them to do, the major one being my tub/shower waterproofing, tile and plaster. The second, was to finish the tile backsplash my mother and I had already stated in my kitchen. I was a little apprehensive when they said they could handle my varying remodel needs when their page only mentions experience with plaster, but he said they used to build houses and even had experience with my unique Moroccan tile so I agreed to let them help me. I asked Braulio for a picture of the tile work he'd done and after several days of asking I panicked a little when he sent me a picture--not of handmade clay tiles that we had talked about--but stone/glass mosaic tiles... I was worried, but he seemed excited for the project so instead of cancelling, I sent him several videos and instructions on the tile I had. He had originally quoted me $550 for the kitchen backsplash, but since my mom and I had already started, I sent him a pic and asked if he'd finish it for $475. He didn't negotiate the price with me, but instead added $500 to my invoice. (Annoying, but ok). The day they came to do my backsplash, they didn't bring their own tile cutting machine or extension cord, but instead used my mom's broken one that we had left on my patio (they also didn't clean it after). They finished adhering the tile on the kitchen wall and left after less than 2 hours--They couldn't come the next day for whatever reason and so it would have to be grouted and finished Wednesday. After they left I looked at the job they had done and again got worried when I saw the cut job they did around the outlets *cringe*. They also didn’t leave the proper spacing in between some of the tiles like I had asked them to. Despite the concerns, I still wanted them to see it through so I pulled off a couple tile pieces for them to redo and waited for Wednesday. On Wednesday, they finished grouting and the job looked decent, but again only left after a couple hours which was disappointing because I thought we'd be able to get started on the waterproofing in the bathroom. Mind you, it's my only bathroom so I've been taking showers at my upstairs neighbors place. It seemed like they could only do little bits at a time and I really started to worry about their experience in handling bathrooms...then that evening, they told me last minute that they would have to come back Friday instead of Thursday bc he was still balancing another big project and needed more time prepare/study for mine. *!* That whole night I couldn't sleep. My bathroom was a major expense, and I definitely didn't want them starting a project I wasn't confident they'd do well in. The next morning I woke up and called him. I told him that he seems like a nice guy, and I'd still consider them for the plaster portion, but I would have to back out of our deal. I told him to obviously keep the $500, for the backsplash, but that I would need the remaining $1,035 returned. This was his response later that day: "You sent me countless ways to do the plaster ,You confuse me. Since day 1 I said I know how to do it. You should of trusted me and not done anything to try and help me. Not once did I use the things you printed out. To be honest with you, I didn’t see not one video you sent me. Because I know how to do it. I was just being nice . How can I say listen I know what to do don’t help without sounding mean. You kept trying to change my price like it’s your company and didn’t send me the full half deposit. Of the $3,345.12 You gave me a total of 1,535 Minus $550 for back splash idk where you got the $475 it has always been $550. The first quote said it. So $1535 minus $550 is =$985. $80 trowels times 4 =$320,$985 minus $320 = $665 And I have a Policy if someone cancel in the middle of the project, I don’t give back the deposit but I’ll send half of $665 the deposit, so half of that is $332.5. I will be sending you $332.5. This is due to wasting my time, and i bought 4 really expensive trowels that were $80 each.that are nonrefundable, 2 finish and 2 circular finish by marshalltown. You say I don’t know but that’s fine. People assume my silence for ignorance.I had 2 other clients and I had to say no to them because of your project. And I will be sending you the booklet instructions for the shower through mail. Thank you I hope you get the bathroom you want" The arrogance and entitlement speaks for itself, but let me also just say - The last dated invoice he made proves the agreed upon backsplash price was $500. - that there was never a cancellation policy discussed or referenced at any point. He totally made that up. Furthermore, he did my backsplash and had not yet started on my bathroom. - Lastly, I find it hard to believe the trowels are non-refundable, but even if they are, it seems like a person working with plaster everyday could use them for a future project. Of course, he just wants me to pay for them, but not keep them. So no, don't waste your time.
