6/21/2017 – I called United Roofing to get a bid on roof replacement for a small house, 22 squares. Jon McCoy answered and said he would be here to look at the roof on 6/272017. 6/28/2017 I had the written bid in hand. It looked pretty thorough, covered everything we had discussed. I am not in the business and doing the best I can to make sure everything I want is included in the bid. Jon seemed like he knew roofing and he had good reviews. He said that repairing the soffit and fascia boards was not included and added a charge for this after sending him pictures. We agreed to an Additional $1,200 charge. The day of the job, he asked if we had agreed to $800, I said no, it was $1,200. The day after the job, he stated we had agreed to $1,500, I again said no, it was $1,200. Point being – get it in writing. I understood Jon would be providing the wood and labor. I ended up providing the wood just so that the wood matched, otherwise, he was using whatever was available aka scrap. The bid included: a) Tear off all old shingles to the existing wood deck 1 layers You can see from the attached pictures, they first attempted to only partially remove the tar paper and nails. Glad I was on site, Jon was not, and I asked the crew to remove down to wood. I called Jon, he said we do sometimes, sometimes we don’t. So, unless you are there watching, you will never know what you get…. b) Replace all felt underlayment with 30 lb. synthetic type Well, this was completed, but you can see from the pictures – it was completed, but very sloppy. Look at the roof edges. Wood is exposed as the cuts we not very precise. Sometimes they ran the felt through the valley and sometimes not. c) Haul away all old shingles and materials. Well, they got most of it. See (d) below. d) Clean yard of all debris and trash / run magnet I will let the pictures do the talking. Shingles and tar paper is still in bushes and nails in driveway and yard. A box of trash was left in the apartment and chicken boxes left in the yard. e) Replace all vent pipe collars with lead permanent type I do not think this was done. I asked, and he gave me an excuse why he couldn't do it, but would leave collars for the plumbers. I have not found them. The only vent provided was for the ac. However, they disconnected the new ac plumbing to the vent and did not reconnect. **See pictures. f) Install new hot water heater low profile vent (main house) This was not done that I can find. g) Remove and add decking / old existing floor furnace vent (main house) I believe this was completed. h) Install ice and water shield to all valleys I believe this was completed. i) Ventilation: whirly birds (2 on main house) This was completed, but only after I said, where are the whirly birds. Jon did not provide. I made a trip to the local supply house, but they only had one. Jon did supply the next day. j) Install 3- 2x4 rafters, install 3 sheets of decking and add flashing with 1ply base and one ply ice and water (cap sheet ) to back porch extension roof to cover existing step down fascia board to extend under main roof shingles Note: there is a $250.00 charge for item (j) included in the final roof quotes - This was completed but not to these specs. Only replaced one 2x4 and partial decking. I went and purchased a long 10 foot 2x4 and a sheet of decking to finish. One piece of decking fell off the next day – apparently. Maybe the roofers removed but did not replace, I am not sure. **See Pictures Okay, now for the really fun stuff. One of the crew decided to go number 2 in the bathroom. Problem is, the water was turned off and we discovered this the next day. I bought a pale of water over for them to flush. I made no less than six trips to buy supplies that were not supplied on site. Otherwise, they would use what was available – old terrible looking wood. Jon is not on site to oversee the job, he does drop by. He has not come by since the job was completed, to my knowledge. Caveat emptor One of the roofers got stopped by police. I ended up paying the bail bond to get one of the roofers out of jail. I was paid back. Agreement says rotten wood extra - I understood I would pay for the rotten wood decking, the wood, it does not say wood and labor. Typically, in prior roofing jobs I have had, the labor is included but not the wood. Jon brought some scrap wood, looked like from a broken desk, to use for decking. I went and purchased real roof decking to match what we had, but he charged me $425. I already paid for the wood, so I am not sure what this charge is for. The quote included flashing; I understood that flashing or drip rail would be provided. It was not. Jon said if I would buy it, they would install for no additional charge. Yet, he added $100 charge for drip rail installation. They did not want to install drip rail, and did not do a very good job. **See pictures. Other: Left wood nailed up on side of house for ladders - to keep from crushing the drip rail. Summary. I had to spend a lot more time than I preferred - making sure things were done correctly, but overall they did a fair job. When they finished, I made a punch list, they came back and made the requested adjustments. I appreciate that they fixed all the remaining issues without excuses, just jumped in and made it right. I hired a different company to do my next roof and they did a much better job and completed the entire job in two days.

We hired Jon McCoy because of the outstanding work he did at my son's home. We had a leak in our back porch ceiling and discovered it was coming from our chimney. Since we had to replace the ceiling, we decided to replace it with vinyl siding. We also decided to have vinyl siding put up on our front porch ceiling. The work was excellent and was finished on time. Jon McCoy is a man of his word. He returns calls promptly and always arrives on time. His work is excellent, and we will continue to use him in the future. I would recommend him to anyone.

In 2013, full roof repair was prompt, well done and reasonably priced. In 2014, repair of roof leak took 3 months with multiple failed efforts before they subcontracted to another roofer who determined different type repair needed. Original estimate of $800 ended up costing $3,800. In April 2018, called them for roof leak. Failed to show or call for 4 scheduled appointments.

Our bid specified old roofing and paper would be removed down to the plywood. Home inspector later found rotten plywood on the roof; owner admitted they left existing paper on to give us "two coats of felt". They came back, ripped off new roofing from above the rot and replaced the rot at no charge. Trouble is they didn't bring enough shingles, and spaced them out to cover ... this did not look like a new roof. They came out again, and this time it looked like a new roof ... with torn up siding next to the repaired shingles. "Not my fault: siding's rotten ... I'll fix it. What else can I tell you" (You could have told us about the damage and your plans to correct it but we had to find it first.) Rather than bring them out for a fourth visit we paid a remodeler to replace the damaged siding. Jon tries, but I am not convinced his crew cares nearly enough.

The removal and replacement of the roof was done in a timely and professional manner. I have used this company for other jobs in the past and was always impressed with their work. The problem I had on this occasion was post replacement. The first storm after the roof was replaced produced a leak in one of the bedrooms. They were quick to check and repair the problem, but the leak left a stain on the ceiling which needs to be touched up. Six months and numerous tries later, I can still not get the company to send someone to touch this up. With my wife and I attempting to sell our house, it looks like we will need to hire someone to do what this company should have done. Like I said before, I had good experiences on prior jobs, but this one will make me hesitant to use them again or recommend them to anyone else.

It was fine. They did a great job. They did some stucco work, and we did have to call them back to work on it some more.

Have used this company before and gotten A+ service all around. This time, one thing was promised, but all of it was not delivered, then the owner denied that he had promised it and the official estimate was nebulous about the facts, so I had nothing to fall back on. For what I got, the price was expensive.

Jon McCoy was very professional and answered all questions with honesty and credibility of someone in business for 30 years. Jon's crew led by Sammy were very thorough and exceeded all of my expectations. Job site was left spotless. I would recommend Jon and United Roofing to anyone needing roofing work.

This is the second time we have hired this company, because they did such a good job the first time we hired them. Our house is a two story house, and there was a lot of rotten wood on either side of the fireplace on the outside wall from a long standing leak. The crew worked hard all day long. They showed up on time every morning and left in the evening, and they completed the work on time. The cleanup was excellent. I have confidence in this company and would recommend them to my neighbors. I will certainly call on them again when the need arises.

Good initial contact, fair pricing of the roof and other work. Very professional crew and foreman. Good cleanup afterward.
This was for a rental property I purchased and had redone. I did some of the work myself and needed some extra help inside, which they were able to do for me. They did a good job and did it on time. Pricing was similar to other bids. The owner was very responsive and followed up on the work.
I would use them again for roofing and general contractor work.

The carpenters they used were exceptionally professional, courteous, and willing to work around our schedules. I think it worked both ways--we're kind of patient people, and we try to extend courtesy as well. I emptied out our garage to give them shaded workspace (it was the middle of our heatwave in July/August), worked with their personal schedules, and, in return, they kept plugging away.

The one drawback I had was that they did work what I thought were short hours during the day, coming in about 10am and leaving about 4pm (we were okay with this due to the extreme heat!). But they always (ALWAYS) kept the area as clean as possible, as safe as possible, and told us what the plan was for the next day.

Example of their courtesy--they had already gone for the day when one of them heard on the radio at 6:30pm that a big surprise weather system was moving in. They came BACK at 7pm that evening, working until 9pm, to seal the big whole in the roof (an 8X8 cutout for the new dormer). You'd think you would expect that sort of response--but I just really appreciated it.

We do plan to contact them for other work--I was really impressed. The final product looks awesome.

It was a small job, however, I received excellent quality work similar to what I would expect on a big job. I have already recommended this company and will use them again. What a blessing to find a contractor who keeps his promises!

It went well. There has been significant rainfall since the re-roofing, and I have found no leaks.

The paint on the frame chimney was damaged, but I don't think that was their fault. I believe that in painting over the years I let paint run down on the shingles, and when the shingles were removed the paint came with them. They patched the bare spots on the chimney with silicon rubber.

There was a hiccup with the estimate. Mr. McCoy gave me an estimate of $5775 for 30-year (architect) shingles, and he ordered the 30-year shingles. On the day when his crew was removing my old shingles he came by and said that he made an error in estimating - he had priced the job for the cheaper 3-tab shingles. The price he charged me was $6590. I had only gotten the one estimate, so I did not object.
