VanderHyde installed a new boiler in my house in 2008. I had some issues with the various zones not heating properly, so I called for a repair. They were timely and responsive. However, on the first service call they sent Kevin, who worked for a while, informed me that the issue was fixed, and left. He charged me $170, and was paid. The house, however, was not getting warmer, so I called VanderHyde back. Kevin told me that it would take a while to catch up since. A few hours later it was unbearable, so we went to a hotel. I called Kevin, and he said he'd come back the next day with the "boiler expert." Kevin and Travis (the boiler expert) did indeed return the next day. I'm not sure why they both came, but whatever. This time, Travis correctly diagnosed the problem and it was repaired. This time I was charged $660 for the repairs. I paid immediately, understanding that I had a credit from the day before. However, after I returned home and read the invoices, I discovered that no credit for the $170 was provided, so I called. They refused to refund the money, despite the fact that they sent over someone who doesn't know how to repair boilers, who misdiagnosed the problem, and didn't fix it. This is the second time responded to the first service call with someone who doesn't know what to do, and then charged me any way. Should have known they would do it again. Will never use them again.

Went OK. They did the work and it 'mostly worked' when they were done. I say mostly because the pressure valve was blowing off of the boiler when they were done (This was NOT happening before they had done the work). I had noticed this the day after I had paid. I contacted them and they wanted to replace the expansion tank and charge me $200. I asked - shouldn't this be covered under the initial work of $4600? They said the part wasn't explicitly in the quote. Frankly at this point to replace what really was a $40 part and half hour of time to do a fully finished job (for $4600). For 1. How am I supposed to know (as a customer) what should be on the quote for a fully finished job (pumps, piping, etc? - they are the expert) 2. How am I supposed to know this isnt their fault. (Shouldnt an autofilling expansion tank be connected to the incoming water supply?) Frankly not standing fully behind their work and making sure they do everything to do a good, finished job - left a 'bad' taste in my mouth. In the end I replaced the auto-filling expansion tank with an Extrol expansion tank for $40 and it took me less than an hour. After that it all appears to work.

This was the worst experience I have had with ANY professional in Grand Rapids at ANY time. A limb bent the electrical line off the side of my house at 4:45 on Friday evening. I called two electricians - the first one said they did not have the wire needed for the job, so turned it down. The second (VanderHyde) accepted the job. On the call the operator informed me that it would be at the overtime rate (which I expected) of $169 for the first labor hour and $180 for each additional hour. I accepted the rate, understanding that I was fairly stuck at that point. First, the technician called me and asked me to tell her what type of wire she needed. I did so by looking at my electrical box. She said that she wasn't sure they had that wire, but she would stop by the office to see. Unbeknownst to me, because I was not informed of this, I was being charged the $180 per hour rate from the moment she took the call at 5:00 pm. The technician arrived at my home at 5:35. I made a note of the time because I wanted to check the charges to be sure I wasn't being overcharged. At that time, she stated they did not have the wire and "she hoped" that no damage had been done to the wire on my home so they didn't need it. Interestingly, after I raised concerns with the owner over the charges, I was told that it was ALWAYS their policy to replace the wire, so why she would come to my home without the proper equipment is beyond me. If they knew they did not have the equipment to fix the problem, THEY SHOULD HAVE TURNED DOWN THE CALL. Instead, she spent about a half hour looking at the downed mast. She came to my door and said that, unfortunately, the wire was damaged (I did not see the wire damage - the mast was simply off the wall) and she was going to Lowe's to pick up some wire. She left at that point and was gone OVER AN HOUR to a store that is three miles from my home. Again, little did I know, I was being billed the entire time. I wasn't even given the choice over the matter - she just left. She came back with the wire at almost 7:00 pm. Again, I made a note of the time. It took her approximately 40 minutes to replace the mast on the side of the house. After she finished, she sat in her truck for 20 minutes "writing out the bill." I was charged $835 for a fix that took 40 minutes to complete. That is PRICE GOUGING. When I contacted the owner, I was told, essentially, that I should just "be grateful" that someone came to fix my electricity, and chastised me for not saying "THANK YOU." (Which, by the way, I did SEVERAL times to the technician who came - but that's completely irrelevant). I attempted to work out a compromise - that I would pay for everything except the trip to Lowe's that inexplicably took over an hour, but I was once again told that I should just be grateful that they had performed the service. I am not grateful for being price-gouged - I was NOT informed that I would be charged for the 35 minutes it took the person to get to my home and for a "trip to Lowe's" for a wire that any good electrical company would have brought with them (if it is truly their policy to replace any wires that have come off the side of a house). They knew what the wire was before they came. I am so totally unsatisfied with this experience. (I have written only ONE other negative rating on any business - and dozens of positive ones.) They took advantage of us during a bad situation. I will also be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau.
Valerie and Bob called ahead to let me know they were coming. They showed up on time at around 8:20am and got right to work. Valerie spent nearly the entire morning outside on the roof (in freezing cold weather) upgrading our mast, power-meter, meter-socket and installing the 30amp outlet for the generator. Bob worked in the basement removing the old panel and getting the connections labeled. He then mounted the new box and together they got the new wires routed through the wall of the house and sealed the openings. They were professional and worked hard to get the job done. Bob left a little earlier and Val stayed until after 5:00pm to make sure it was completed.

To quote the job, I was in contact with Ryan via email. He was able to give me accurate pricing and quick responses to questions. They were very clear about what needed to be done, and well informed of local and state requirements for my area. Pricing was a little higher than I expected, but not unreasonably so, and certainly not as much as some of the quotes I received. And after seeing the work involved, I would chalk it up to market forces/demand.

At a time when finding good contractors (our neighbor is having a new roof put on, and I watched as several of their crew nearly got into a fist fight on the roof of their house) is getting harder and harder, I'm extremely comfortable recommending VanderHyde to anyone. Professional, prompt, and reliable.

Our A/C stopped functioning. They removed dust and debris from the coils in the 'inside' unit. They also cleaned the drainage hose that took condensation out. Unfortunately, they missed an overflow tray which filled up a few days later, overflowing above the ceiling of our living room. It soaked the plaster. We are still getting bids to fix it, but the bids are hovering in the ~$500-$700 range. VanderHyde was apologetic and fixed the problem promptly when notified, but the damage had been done. I think it was an honest oversight. But that oversight doubled the cost of the repair. I would still use them again.
Several years ago we had a toilet installed by another contractor. When it began leaking into the basement last month, I called that contractor twice--one time, he said he'd be out the next day (no show), and the next he never returned my call. Vanderhyde came out within two days after I called. The plumber immediately spotted the problem, explained why the first installation probably had some issues, and fixed the problem in short order. Anthony was professional, prompt, and even offered another very small adjustment ($16) so our toilet would flush better. I will be using Vanderhyde going forward for all my plumbing needs.
They arrived on time. They worked within our obstacles of pets and kids. When Chris opened the box for the new unit found that it was severely dented and called for a new unit to be brought. He went ahead and did what work he could do without the unit. Once the unit got here he was ready to hook it up and continue. I had to leave for a job interview and had now problem leaving Chris to do the job he had to do. He did a wonderful job.
We absolutely love VanderHyde! We had a leak in the pipe for our hot water heat downstairs in our lower level. They took things apart and found the pipe was laying right on the concrete foundation wall. They rerouted the pipe away from the concrete wall and did a great job. They were professional, experts in the field, and very mindful of cost to us. Very friendly and helpful.
