This was the worst experience I have had with ANY professional in Grand Rapids at ANY time. A limb bent the electrical line off the side of my house at 4:45 on Friday evening. I called two electricians - the first one said they did not have the wire needed for the job, so turned it down. The second (VanderHyde) accepted the job. On the call the operator informed me that it would be at the overtime rate (which I expected) of $169 for the first labor hour and $180 for each additional hour. I accepted the rate, understanding that I was fairly stuck at that point. First, the technician called me and asked me to tell her what type of wire she needed. I did so by looking at my electrical box. She said that she wasn't sure they had that wire, but she would stop by the office to see. Unbeknownst to me, because I was not informed of this, I was being charged the $180 per hour rate from the moment she took the call at 5:00 pm. The technician arrived at my home at 5:35. I made a note of the time because I wanted to check the charges to be sure I wasn't being overcharged. At that time, she stated they did not have the wire and "she hoped" that no damage had been done to the wire on my home so they didn't need it. Interestingly, after I raised concerns with the owner over the charges, I was told that it was ALWAYS their policy to replace the wire, so why she would come to my home without the proper equipment is beyond me. If they knew they did not have the equipment to fix the problem, THEY SHOULD HAVE TURNED DOWN THE CALL. Instead, she spent about a half hour looking at the downed mast. She came to my door and said that, unfortunately, the wire was damaged (I did not see the wire damage - the mast was simply off the wall) and she was going to Lowe's to pick up some wire. She left at that point and was gone OVER AN HOUR to a store that is three miles from my home. Again, little did I know, I was being billed the entire time. I wasn't even given the choice over the matter - she just left. She came back with the wire at almost 7:00 pm. Again, I made a note of the time. It took her approximately 40 minutes to replace the mast on the side of the house. After she finished, she sat in her truck for 20 minutes "writing out the bill." I was charged $835 for a fix that took 40 minutes to complete. That is PRICE GOUGING. When I contacted the owner, I was told, essentially, that I should just "be grateful" that someone came to fix my electricity, and chastised me for not saying "THANK YOU." (Which, by the way, I did SEVERAL times to the technician who came - but that's completely irrelevant). I attempted to work out a compromise - that I would pay for everything except the trip to Lowe's that inexplicably took over an hour, but I was once again told that I should just be grateful that they had performed the service. I am not grateful for being price-gouged - I was NOT informed that I would be charged for the 35 minutes it took the person to get to my home and for a "trip to Lowe's" for a wire that any good electrical company would have brought with them (if it is truly their policy to replace any wires that have come off the side of a house). They knew what the wire was before they came. I am so totally unsatisfied with this experience. (I have written only ONE other negative rating on any business - and dozens of positive ones.) They took advantage of us during a bad situation. I will also be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. <br />
