YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT THEY DID TO US!
DISCLAIMER: Our review is honest and factual, and based on our real experiences with WCBI.
As an Engineer with a stay-at-home wife, we know the importance of researching contractors before hiring them. We thought we did our homework and chose a company with a reputable track record, but we were wrong. Don't be fooled by the empty promises and lack of response from this company of three owners. Here's our story, and I hope you read our experience before considering West Coast Building & Construction.
West Coast Building & Construction is currently under collections for failing to pay on a settlement against them. They agreed to the settlement terms, but fell way short of their responsibility. They were sued for costly mistakes made at their end, and to this date, have not completed the job, as stated in our original contract. They demanded final payment, and then never finished the job! It has been over 6 months since they left us unfinished. This is not only unprofessional, but lacks integrity and character.
Here is an abbreviated list of issues they were sued for, as part of the Settlement:
1. Punitive Damages: For their workers repeatedly urinating at four different areas on our property. It took months to get rid of the stench. This happened even after we offered them to use our front bathroom! This is disgusting and inexcusable!
2. Refund for Installation of Wrong Grass: For installing the wrong grass in the back yard. This even happened AFTER we identified that they ordered the wrong grass for the front yard, which they fixed, but failed to identify the same mistake on the back yard. Seriously bad quality control. We thought they would be more careful next time...wrong!
3. Refund for materials charged but never installed: Contract calls out for replacing 8x8x12' deck posts, but they did not replace them, and took the wood with them, without adjusting the contract price.
Here is an abbreviated list of issues that we could not sue them for, but actually happened:
1. Drainage issue with patio concrete area: 3' diameter water puddle in concrete slab right by the patio door. 30-years experience...hmmm?
2. Ordered substitute bricks of the wrong length, while promising us that it would look fine. It turns out that the weakest stress hollow point of the decorative bricks is right over the width of the wall. This would have made it easy for kids to stand on the edge of the brick and break off the overhanging part of it. We had to negotiate a conditional refund for them because they didn't know how to get around the 20% restocking fee...but I did? It's not even my profession!
3. Circular planter wall around tall palm trees in front yard too tight, leaving less than 1/2" gap from the tree trunk! I anticipate the wall will crack within 5 years. Great job guys!
4. Bad advice given for applying concrete sealer to decorative bricks, causing a white cloudy residue on all 340+ of our new bricks. Now it looks 30 years old! I'll have to pay a concrete restoration company to strip that stuff off the bricks.
5. Un-level and crooked brick caps on divider wall in front yard. Poor quality of installation. You can see the wavy pattern from the street.
6. Sprinkler system in planter box in back yard gardens had no logical spray distribution pattern! We have 3 in a row, skip 2, then one by itself, with yet even a different sequence for the other half of the garden. Uneven water coverage resulted in plants dying.
7. Inconsistent color across colored concrete on back yard patio: Inconsistent shading throughout. Not nearly as beautiful as they promised us. I don't think they had any experience with colored concrete.
8. Stray Surface Scratches, from tools and tool boxes, on top of freshly poured colored concrete. No effort was made in being careful of the top finish of the freshly poured slab. Scratches look white against the tan color cement.
Now imagine all those issues happening to customers, like us, who provided every worker with Lunch, lemon aide, watermelon, Gatoraid, water, ice cream, etc. And we also gave one of the workers a complete computer system with KVM and speakers. Also we gave one of them some office furniture, portable radio, and other items we were going to give to Good Will. We did all that, out of our generosity and appreciation of the hard workers, during the project. It wasn't until after we paid them and the concrete dried, where we discovered most of the issues above.
We've been working with Joe Villegas, regarding collecting payments towards our settlement agreement, and having them send a worker back to complete the job, but he has been stalling us for months on end. Empty promises, false intentions for payments, etc. we even told him that if they honored our Settlement Agreement, we would write a positive review, highlighting the good points of their service and for keeping their word. We've exhausted all of our efforts to work with them on this issue, and because of their lack of integrity, honor, and character, We have to warn others of the facts of our experience. They did a decent job at a great price, but be aware of the potential to be screwed in other areas. We wish them well, but they need to get their act together when trying to satisfy their customers.
