Started off okay, then quickly advanced to an exhausting experience.
The driver/owner arrived in a Budget rented truck. It literally took 10 or so minutes for the driver just to park the truck. The deal I purchased was for 3 movers - he arrived with only 2. Am I gonna cancel the move? No, this move is too important and time is of the essence.
Straight away, the driver/owner shoves a contract in my face, insisting I sign. I told him that he didn't even have the agreed upon number of workers for the move and that if they should go over time - I won't be paying extra. I signed - this move was too important, and again, time was of the essence.
The owner/driver was one thing, his employee was actually a pleasure to have around and easily directable. However, together, these guys took forever... I mean forever. I already had nearly everything packed in boxes - granted, I did have some gym equipment and weights that needed to be placed in the truck - no disassembly required. They arrived at approx. 10:50 AM and we did not leave until after 1 PM. I knew we were going to be going over the 3 hour time limit. I decided to try and do some damage control. The owner and I shook on a deal that I would give him $100 extra if they would stay to help with situating gym equipment. I thought it was fair, and so did he. Hence the mutual shake of hands.
Did I mention that I helped these guys for most of the haul? I have the wounds on my hands and arms to prove it.
I arrive at the destination approx. 45 minutes prior to their arrival - understandable given the traffic. Get this, the owner/driver, no joke, takes at least 20 minutes for a failed attempt to park truck. What do you think happened? He ended up parking the truck and leaving it in the middle of the street, blocking traffic, neighbors were outside (probably calling the cops) wondering what was going on. I had to go over and apologize to my new neighbors and explain what was going on. How embarrassing. The driver/owner was getting irritated at the car that was Legally parked adjacent to my driveway. I had to tell him that the car is legally parked and that, whoever it was, had every right to be parked there. I told him that he should let his employee make an attempt at parking. After some convincing, he agreed. Truck was parked in less than 5 minutes.
Now, a third guy arrives. He was not much help, but seemed to be nice enough.
We get to moving my things in the house. I'm directing, grabbing boxes, and helping with the bigger pieces. Almost done.
This guy, the driver/owner, - starts to get upset when I tell him I'll give him his $100 once we finish. He becomes perturbed and states that we "need to talk". Long story short... I give him and extra $200 and am incredibly happy to have him gone and out of my house. I made the decision to give the extra $100 primarily because I felt bad for his employees, and thought that they should be paid a little extra for having to deal with their boss's behavior and poor business etiquette. On the positive side of things, no severely damaged goods.
#nightmaremove.
