Very badly. Signed up for work to be done and paid $1000 deposit just before leaving on vacation with understanding that work would commence when we returned. Price for job included asbestos removal. Removal contractor showed up and told us "Oh, there is no asbestos here". At that point we looked up reviews of this company and discovered that half of the people who had reviewed them gave them the worst possible rating. We then had a different, highly rated contractor come out and give us an estimate for the work that was needed. The price was just over half of what Zero Energy was going to charge. At this point we called Zero Energy, cancelled the contract and requested a return of our deposit. After much back and forth on the phone we attempted to resolve the matter through the credit card with which we paid the deposit. They said that because there was a three day cancellation limit in the contract we had signed, they could not help. We considered going through small claims court since no actual work had been done and there were a number of sketchy points about the written contract we had signed. Ultimately, because of the up front costs and uncertain outcome of going this route, we gave up and ate the $1000 loss on our deposit.

We just completed an energy upgrade where solar panels were installed and insulation, gas, and electrical was brought up to code. We are very happy with the work. Manny Ortega was great to work with. All of the people that came to do work were professional and provided the highest quality in work.
While the cost is $20,000, it gets paid by rebates from the federal government and SCE rebates as well as savings.
There is not enough room to put all the details about this (fill in the blank) company in this space. We signed a contract with this group in November of 2013 and have yet to have the work completed. As you read with others, a sales person came and told us that the majority of our work would be paid for by rebates. (He did not talk about the tax program the rebates are a part of, nor that no money from the Federal program was to be realized to pay off the loan you have to take out before they will do the work.) The people at the company who are supposed to "help you secure your rebates" do not know the tax laws or rules regarding the incentives. My tax person had to educate them on how it works. Their response to me was "Sorry." The sales people make you sign up for a loan to pay for the work. So Zero Energy gets paid, in full, up front. There is no incentive for them to do the work or be responsive to you. Things started out okay. The workers who come are basically on time. There were a number of "truck broke down en route" to explain delays and the scheduling was all off; they came when we told them not to come. After most of the work was done and we began to get some rebates back, I tried to get the plumbing part finished for the solar water heater; that was April of 2014. I have talked now with I believe it is 4 different guys (there is always a new one who will have to go back and check on my specific job) in charge of the plumbing. I cannot get a straight story about when work is to be completed or what exactly still needs to be completed. I have documentation of the phone calls and contacts that we have had with this company. It is 4 pages, front and back, of promises made and not kept. Workers have apologized to me on more than one occasion for the slowness of things and how long this has taken to get finished. They are subcontractors I believe. I have had emails from Mr. Murphy, including a request to connect up on LInkedIn. He has promised to get this completed. That promise was made last summer. I have made calls to him and he has not called back. This company is terrible. I cannot get them out of my life as I am still owed almost $2000 for the rebate that I am entitled to but can not get until they finish the work. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! IF YOU DO, YOU ARE AS FOOLISH AS I HAVE BEEN.

The guys that came to do the work were great, did a good job, cleaned everything up after they were done.

My issue is with the solar water heater and the company it's self. My home improvements were part of upgrade California program. When they sold me the system they never said anything about putting an ugly shed on the back of my house. That was an argument and I refused to let them put that ugly thing up. We came to compromise. The water storage tank and heating tank were put in the garage (they take up a lot of space). After the work was done I was suppose to get rebates for taking part in the program. To this date I still have not received any of my rebates nor has the building inspector been here to inspect the system to make sure it was installed correctly. It has been over a year since the work was first done and getting someone to call me back to deal with these issues is like pulling teeth. When I finally spoke to one of the owners ( yesterday) he told me that part of my rebate went to pay for my system (What), again that was never discussed when I purchased the solar system. Not to mention I paid it all off already.

You can find other reputable businesses to do the same job and probably for less money. It has been nothing but a nightmare!

TAXES:

My neighbors have had similar trouble. Be aware if you have paid off your house and are retired that the tax rebates are a little more difficult for you. You don't get it back all at ounce. It will be over a span of 5 years and it might not be all of it. It depends on your deductions. And of course they don't tell you that when they sell the program and the system to you.

I was a little annoyed that they don't have tanks like I do. Their unit is self contained on the roof of their house. The company never offered me this system. When I asked the owner about it he said the type of systems offered through the program changes as time goes on. My neighbor and I had our work done at the same time. Why do I have two tanks in my garage. I smell bullpoo....

They did a great job not only on the work being done but also in communicating with me throughout the project. The workers showed up on time and left my home as clean as the possibly could for the type of work being done. In the end I was very pleased with the work they did and how I was treated.

Very professional, but not interested. Many extra items they wanted to do (per Edison requirements) to receive rebates, that I didn't feel was necessary. One interesting thing, was claiming the AC ductwork in the attic was leaking excessively. They did not know, this was less than two months old, and leaked tests were already performed. This may be standard from these companies, but I also didn't like the idea of waiting a year (interest-free) to pay, while the and quot;rebatesand quot; came through. If, for some reason, all the rebates did not happen within that year, I am sure I would be charged the full price. I don't gamble. However, if someone is interested in doing all of their recommendations, I think this company was fine.

When I called the office to get some kind of of explanation I was transferred to a second person who told me that he would get somebody to call and explain and also send me a written information of what and how the tests work and a break down of what should be done to arrive at their suggested cost of approx. $14,000.00. I'm still waiting.

They were always here when they said they were going to be here. They would call me and tell me that they are going to be here at 2:00 and they were here at 2:00. If they weren't, they would call and let me know. They answered all my questions. They were always very attentive. Even the three owners came out and looked at the work. If I had any questions, they got right back to me. I would highly recommend Zero Energy.
