"After living in our 2000 sq foot 1939 cape house for 5 years we began to notice that much of the paint was coming off of our cedar shingles in huge flakes. After consulting with several experts we learned that replacing the shingles would be very expensive, but simply sanding them would not prevent such flaking from occurring again since the shingles had remaining oils in them. However we found one very exciting solution, the PaintShaver Pro (PSP), which was basically a powerful grinder that could remove paint down to the wood quickly and cleanly. Clarke was one of the few companies in the area that used the machine and was also willing to divide the job into prep and painting since we wanted to do some of the staining ourselves using a Sherwin Williams antique red stain. Their price was quite competitive at around $5000 for the prep only. And the PSP uses a HEPA vacuum which ensures quick cleanup and environmental safety to meet tough new EPA guidelines. In terms of quality, Clarke performed the project very quickly in a week however we noticed on the first run that there were a number of areas that they had missed and asked them to come back and take care of some of them which they did. The team was professional and polite. The quality was probably not at the same level as the most expensive contractors but again we did not pay top dollar and were looking to do some of the staining afterwards ourselves so we did not sweat the details. Also, to be fair the PSP has a hard time getting into tight spots around edges and as a result a sander is needed to strip these areas. I would definitely use them again for this type of application and we are currently considering hiring them to put the final coat of stain on our house and trim with a paint sprayer since applying the first layer by hand by roller provided very time consuming."

FAQs for lawn care aeration projects in Phippsburg, ME

Aeration is the best way to keep your lawn healthy and vibrant. Annual aeration makes your lawn more breathable and helps nutrients reach the roots, improving water absorption and reducing puddles where pests might breed. However, timing matters. It's best to avoid aerating during droughts, extreme heat, or if your lawn is battling weeds. A local pro can help you determine the ideal time for your yard.

Most lawns benefit from annual aeration to keep them healthy and thriving. If your lawn has a lot of thatch buildup—more than half an inch—you might need to aerate twice a year for a couple of years to get it under control. But if your soil isn't compacted and there's minimal thatch, you might be able to skip a year.

When you hire a professional lawn care company, a standard 10,000-square-foot lawn takes about 30 minutes to aerate. Uneven, sloped, or especially large lawns can take significantly more time. So, depending on your lawn's size and condition, the process can take anywhere from half an hour to several hours.

The best time to aerate your lawn is during the spring or fall when your grass is actively growing and the soil has enough moisture. Aerating once in the spring and once in the fall yields the best results. Avoid aerating when your lawn is dormant or right after heavy rain when the soil is too wet—that can make aeration less effective.

Even if your lawn looks healthy, aeration can still be beneficial. If you have good growth, proper drainage, and little thatch, you might not need to aerate right away. Regular aeration helps water and nutrients reach the roots, keeping your lawn strong over time. Keep an eye on your lawn's condition to decide when it might need aeration.
