Southern by Design is a full service landscape company. The company strives to create and maintain both landscapes and relationships with hospitality. As the owner of the company, I (Wesley Clement) have 18 years of experience in the landscape industry and a BS in Landscape Horticulture from Auburn University. Although, we are in the Pacific Northwest, I was born and raised in the state of Alabama and have worked in other metro areas such as Raleigh, NC and Atlanta, GA. With all of this in mind, I decided to reflect this in the name of the company. I believe that this gives me several perspectives to pull from when looking at a property to help solve any issue or concern. I have worked on projects ranging from small residential installations to large scale commercial installations and maintenance (incl. HOA’s, apartments, municipalities, malls, hospitals, industrial parks, hotels, etc.). I have combined all of my experience and education to create a company that I believe helps customers meet and exceed all of their landscape goals. Southern by Design can provide many services to clients including landscape design, installation and maintenance as well as irrigation and lighting design, installation and repairs. We can also help with other projects such as retaining walls, drainage, seeding/sodding, seasonal color and mulching (barking).

"Initially, when Chip was still with the company, we had no issues. We hired them to care for the lawn work at one of our rental properties. We knew of them via my wife's sister and they performed well. We hired them to care for the lawn at the rental and the price was reasonable. We asked them to clear out a section of weeds along the lot line, which they did and sprayed the ground to kill off any remnants. That was fall of 2017. Communication with Chip & Irene was always great and prompt. 2018 rolls around and we begin service again. In May, we contact Total Grounds about spraying the weeds again, which they said they would do. They came to mow, but never sprayed. We were billed for the mow and not the spray. We called twice again about spraying and never received a call back. We weren't billed, either. On May 30th was the last time we heard from them when they mowed (and again didn't spray the weeds). By July 2nd, we figured they were never coming back again, never received a call from them....just "Poof"...they seem to have vanished. We sent them a termination notification on July 2nd and oddly enough....still have not heard from them. We know they are still in business as they still maintain the lawns as my wife's work place. Very odd way to operate a business, but...………….."

FAQs for lawn care aeration projects in Oak Harbor, WA

Aeration is the best way to keep your lawn healthy and vibrant. Annual aeration makes your lawn more breathable and helps nutrients reach the roots, improving water absorption and reducing puddles where pests might breed. However, timing matters. It's best to avoid aerating during droughts, extreme heat, or if your lawn is battling weeds. A local pro can help you determine the ideal time for your yard.

Most lawns benefit from annual aeration to keep them healthy and thriving. If your lawn has a lot of thatch buildup—more than half an inch—you might need to aerate twice a year for a couple of years to get it under control. But if your soil isn't compacted and there's minimal thatch, you might be able to skip a year.

When you hire a professional lawn care company, a standard 10,000-square-foot lawn takes about 30 minutes to aerate. Uneven, sloped, or especially large lawns can take significantly more time. So, depending on your lawn's size and condition, the process can take anywhere from half an hour to several hours.

The best time to aerate your lawn is during the spring or fall when your grass is actively growing and the soil has enough moisture. Aerating once in the spring and once in the fall yields the best results. Avoid aerating when your lawn is dormant or right after heavy rain when the soil is too wet—that can make aeration less effective.

Even if your lawn looks healthy, aeration can still be beneficial. If you have good growth, proper drainage, and little thatch, you might not need to aerate right away. Regular aeration helps water and nutrients reach the roots, keeping your lawn strong over time. Keep an eye on your lawn's condition to decide when it might need aeration.
