How We Got Started

I chose to work in this industry because Having a degree in Electronics, I witnessed the popularity of hot tubs almost from the beginning in the early to mid 1980's. At the time there were a lot of people selling them but very few people capable of diagnosing and repairing them. I worked under a service pro for two years and when he left town I went out on my own and have been doing this job since 1988 as Aquastar Spa Service. I think of myself not so much as a "part replacer" but as an agent for the homeowner employed not only to find solutions to their problems but also educate them on water chemistry and the proper ways to maintain the hot tub..

I needed a pump motor replaced and contacted about 6 local businesses for information and price quotes. I'm a total novice regarding spas, and some of the places I talked to made it clear I was asking dumb questions. Not so with Steve at Aquastar. He patiently answered my many questions, provided a very competitive quote, then came out and installed the motor within a couple of days. He also repaired a leaking water line that I damaged when removing the outer panels--at no extra charge. I was at work during the service call, but my wife said Steve was very professional and polite. He set up the spa controls for us and later emailed me a Quick Start Guide for my model. Highest possible recommendation for Steve and Aquastar. I would definitely use them again!

Criminal Background Check

Who does HomeAdvisor background check?

The owner or principal of each business in HomeAdvisor's network (with the exception of Corporate Accounts) must pass a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot perform a background check on every employee of a business—the background checks are performed only on the owner or principal. As always, we recommend that you conduct your own research on the businesses you hire, including making inquiries directly with the businesses regarding their employee background check policies.

What does the background check cover?

We use a third-party vendor to conduct a criminal records search in the county in which the business owner or principal works. Our third-party vendor uses a national criminal database ("NCD") to screen service professionals. Business owners or principals with felony arrests that carry a pending decision or who are convicted of felonies in the past 7 years ago will not be admitted to the network. Businesses or owners convicted misdemeanors or felonies, or who have dismissed charges or arrests on their records involving rape/incest, sex offenses, or lewd and lascivious behavior at any point in time will not be admitted to our network.

Our background check does not exclude service professionals unless the crime at issue is a felony.

*The comprehensiveness of the NCD varies by state. Please be aware that the reporting in the NCD is particularly limited in the following states: AL, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, LA, ME, MA, MI, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, SD, UT, VA, VT, and WY. After initial admission to the HomeAdvisor network, businesses are re-screened if a concern is reported to HomeAdvisor.

Corporate Accounts

Some businesses are employees, franchisees, dealers or independent contractors ("Corporate SP's") of larger national or "Corporate Accounts". When this is the case, we may match you with the Corporate Account or with one of their Corporate businesses. The above screening process does not apply to Corporate Accounts, as HomeAdvisor does not screen Corporate Accounts or Corporate businesses.

Sex Offender Search We confirm that the owner/principal is not listed on the official state Sex Offender web site in the state in which the owner/principal of the company is located. Bankruptcy Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the history of the principal/owner of the business for bankruptcy filings by or against them. Legal Search for Civil Judgments We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for state level civil legal judgments entered against them. Liens Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for liens placed against them. Identity Verification (SSN) HomeAdvisor verifies the social security number(s) of the owner/principal for identity check purposes. This check applies primarily to smaller business entities. Identity Verification (Reverse Phone Lookup) We conduct a reverse business phone lookup to identify records matching the phone number information provided by the business.
