"This was my first Angie's List experience and the whole process was great.  I had three different landscaping companies come and look at what I wanted done.  I narrowed it down to Nesbit Landscaping and American Landscaping  While both quotes were similarly priced, their proposed plant materials were very different.  Since it was hard to make a decision solely based on what's listed on a piece of paper, I asked each company if they could provide a rough sketch of what the final design would look like.  Eric from Nesbit Landscaping came out that evening with a sketch and personally reviewed everything he was proposing.  American Landscaping sent me an email that said I needed to "hire a landscape designer and he or she will design it like you requested for a specific price, usually around $300."  After that it was an easy decision to go with Nesbit Landscaping.  
Eric was great to work with, he's nice, personable and very professional.  The work was scheduled for a week after agreeing on the plan.  He and his crew arrived exactly when the said they would and got right to work.  I had both plant beds in the front of the house redone as well as a bed in the front left side of the house, an area behind my mailbox and an area at the end of my driveway. They removed any unwanted plant material and even transplanted a couple of bushes I wanted to keep.  The entire job took about 1 1/2 days to complete.  After the first day the crew completely cleaned everything up even though they were coming back first thing in the morning. 
I met with Eric after the first day and we made some slight modifications to the plan, we took out a couple of plants from the original plan and added a bed of perennials instead.  He also checked my sprinkler setup to make sure that all the new areas would be covered and added a couple of new sprinkler heads to cover some areas that weren't getting coverage. He also pointed out some drains which his guys repaired.  Eric also took the time to go over how and when to prune each of the new plants.  At the end of the day the final price was actually $400.00 lower than the initial estimate.
