"Everything went great!  From beginning to end. They were very professional, from the estimate to the install.
Our estimator Debbie, was on time and very helpful with color selection and style. The two guys who came to install the new gutters were quick and efficient, Removing our old gutters and putting up the new in about five hours. Clean up was great they even raked their footprints out of the beauty bark . Great experience all around!

"Great company took the time to explain what the procedures and options were and why another company would have done me in had I gone with their advice to put leaf covers on old gutters."

"They did a good job of cleaning our gutters, especially since they did the work in the pouring rain. I requested two people because the roof is steep and two were sent at no extra charge."

I waited 1.5 years to put in this review so that I could get the emotions out of this review.  So that's one year of Angie's List subscription that I'm paying but not using, just so that I could give a fair review.

If you want a decent job for a plain roof for a low price, go with Pro Roofing.  If you want a higher quality roof and the performance/service to go with it, you should probably pay a bit more for other roofers.

My issues:

1. My skylight's frame got damaged from bad installation practice.  The inexperienced guy on the team basically had his foot weighted down on my skylight as he was prying out roof shingles around the skylight.  They replaced the frame of the skylight since they were changing my skylights as well and they caulked the damaged drywall but not in a nice way.

2. My furnace exhaust pipe was cut too short and I discovered a few days later that it got detached from the furnace, damaging bracket installations.  Alex the owner was no-show, no-response after sending a guy over to look at it.  I had to pay a couple hundred for my furnace installers to come over to re-install the pipe, re-attach it to the furnace and also make it extend higher again to make sure nothing would leak.  I have no direct evidence that they were the ones who damaged it, but the shingle delivery guys and the roofers were the only ones who were ever close to the furnace pipe on a very steep section of the roof, and I saw them use that pipe sometimes as leverage in climbing up to the top.

3. They left satellite dishes uninstalled but still connected to the cables and hanging from the roof which resulted in a gutter drain getting ripped off the wall.  I was able to rescrew the drain fortunately using other previously-unused holes on the mounting bracket.

4. The flashing on the chimney extruded so much it reminded me of Transformers in the midst of transforming.  They did cut it down a few days after I complained.

5. They blew dirt into my garage during cleanup.  I did complain but we just cleaned this up ourselves instead of waiting for them, but this was again the same inexperienced guy on the team.

6. They did not finish installing shingles on top of the ridge vent.  We set a time for them to come over Saturday to finish up and I waited for a no-show with no phone call.  One guy came back a week later to finish up.

7. They left roofing material on my lawn for days, which killed the grass underneath it.

8. They did not put back small parts of my siding, thus exposing the underlying waterproofing sheet.  I had to find the siding parts and nail back on my own.

Pro Roofing was my 2nd choice out of a few Angie's List repeat award winners, but they offered a very good price and they were local and so I went with them.  They even emailed me bios of their roofer employees which gave the feeling of a company that took care of their employees, which was nice.

I selected the Certainteed Landmark TL Ultimate which was much higher-end and heavier than the basic Landmark, Landmark Pro and Landmark Premium shingles and of course, higher-priced.  They still offered a very good price but because I was paying for a higher-end product, my expectations for installation performance and detail probably went up.  The installers who came were also seemingly contractors paid by the job and not the ones whose bios I received.  These two things in combination probably were the root of my headaches.

Micah was actually good and responsive as a salesperson.  He patiently helped me get samples of different roof styles and colors to help us select our desired one.  Sales, installation, and customer care are totally different things though and I don't think he had much authority in terms of settling customer complaints.

Roofing is hard work and I appreciated the hard work of the roofers especially that summer of 2013 when it was all hot and sunny.  I gave them Gatorade every day and even bought 4 of them dinner one day when they were staying late.  I think they were just overcommitted and tired from  all the jobs they had and had to switch to the next job immediately after doing mine.  Most days they'd arrive 9am or after and then stay about 8pm to do as much as they could.  It did not help that most of the time there were three guys but only two were experienced and actually doing the roofing while the other was just on the ground doing minor stuff.  It seemed that they were contractors paid by the job whose incentive would

be to finish the job as quickly as they can to move on to the next.  It was summer when I had my roof done and so it was peak season and they almost finished my roof in 3 days with some patchwork left to do.

The main guy on the roofer team came back to do some patch work but he was in a hurry to get out.  I had him pare the flashing to reasonable levels and attempted to have him fix another gutter pipe that was not put back properly but he was obviously in a hurry for another job and I didn't want him doing a bad job in a rush and do more damage and so I let him go.  I paid Pro Roofing soon after because I wanted the roofers paid.

A few days later, can't remember why but I went in to look at the furnace room and discovered the damaged furnace pipe.  I had complained about a lot of things previously (see issue list above) and I got the impression from Alex's (the owner) response that perhaps he thought I was just trying to give them a hard time with this furnace pipe complaint or maybe trying to get them to fix a problem which they did not cause.  As mentioned above, I didn't look in the furnace room before and during the job so I couldn't say for sure that they were the ones who damaged it, but they cut and put in a pipe cap as part of their work and I saw them step on the pipe as they climbed to the top of the roof ridge so in likelihood they were the ones who damaged it.

So I think I now have a decent-looking roof that likely won't leak.  If I had chosen the cheap Landmark shingles, all the issues I put up with above perhaps would have been a bit easier to swallow because of lower overall cost.  I guess I was naive to expect more just because I was paying for high-quality shingles.  The lesson here is, if you want better performance/service, pay a bit more.  My main roofer choice was out of Burien and wasn't that much more expensive and in hindsight I should have gone with them as I had a certain comfort level talking with the guy who came to measure my roof for the quote whereas Micah was more of a hard-seller.  Then again, Pro Roofing had multiple years of Angie's List Super Service Award and they were local.  That's what I paid Angie's List for, to get that assurance.  Interestingly, Pro Roofing had Super Service Awards from 2009 to 2012, but not 2013 and 2014.

So go with Pro Roofing for a cheap, decent roof.  If you want a higher-quality roof with more refined installation to boot, go with another roofer.

"Seth & Jessie were extremely professional from my first contact to when the job was completed. They kept me informed about the bid (which they stuck to), were on time when they said, did an outstanding job, cleaned everything outside and took all old gutters as they said they would. I couldn’t be happier. I got 3 different bids and A1 and they were the only business that recommended using 6 inch gutters. After much research they had been absolutely correct since we have very large, steep roofs and every article I read recommended 6 inch gutters for that type of roof. I would recommend them to anyone!
