"The work was largely subbed out to a third party.  Quality of hardscape was average.  Not much attention was paid to precision - alignment, cleanliness of cuts, etc. of the landscaping timber units.  Agreed upon details were not always followed.  The "stone" pavers were nicely set, but the brick paving was done with far less care.
My main problem was with the softscape work. The soil they put into the planters was not what was needed for a garden.  It was predominantly clay or sand.  I raised this as an issue right at the beginning when they brought the material, but they continued to bring more, saying that it was something different/better.  Then they covered it all with 6" of mulch.  The crew and the owner were unresponsive.  I was trying to get the gardens ready for fall planting, and with multiple delays (following the Oct. start) the work was not complete until well into November.  This made it difficult for me to get into a prolonged argument with the contractor.  
I ended up having to add compost/topsoil - after peeling away the excessively deep layer of mulch - to each of the planters as I put in bulbs or plant material.  I had to do this last fall and I am having to do it again this spring.
They also did not keep the bushes intended for relocation well protected and watered.  They also did not do any replanting!
