"I have to be truthful and say James is a nice guy, but I wasn?t so pleased with the services provided. James arrived at my home at 9:45 am. He stated that his charges were $45/hour or $300 for a day. I had three things I wanted done. The first was a window that wouldn?t close. James looked at the window and decided the window lock was a problem. He asked if I would mind a shim under the lock to lift it up so it would lock, I told him that if that was what was needed, then it was alright. The second thing I needed done was a ceiling area under my sunroom (the sunroom juts out over a concrete patio) that had gotten water damage. One and a half sheets of plywood needed to be replaced. James took a look at it and said that it would be cheaper if he just cut out the damaged area on the end and put in another piece of wood, (in his words, ?like a puzzle?) and said that it would be cheaper for me instead of replacing the entire sheet of wood. (If the whole sheet was replaced, it would have looked more uniform with the rest of the area.) The third thing I needed was for some plywood to be placed in the attic so I could store some boxes.
James left at 10:30am to go to Home Depot that is 5 miles away. He said that he would get the material and Home Depot?s contractor?s desk would call me and ask for my credit card as payment for the supplies. Home Depot called and told me what the charges were, but some material was out of stock. I asked him to read off the charges and he stated that there was plywood and a pair of gloves. I asked him to put James back on the phone. I asked James why I was paying for gloves. He said that the guy at Home Depot made a mistake, that it was a personal item and that he would pay me back. When I got back on the phone, the
guy at the contractor?s desk said that he was never asked to separate the gloves from the order. That made me uncomfortable. James said he had to go to another Home Depot because I didn?t need shims for the window after all, I needed a new sash lock. He said that since it was already after 12:00pm, he would take lunch. He returned at 1:00pm.
When he returned he fixed the sash locks and the window was able to close. He then worked on putting plywood in my attic and he cut up a couple of boards to be able to fit them through the opening. The attic is hot and dusty and he asked if I had a dust mask he could have. He had purchased 3/8 x 4 ft. by 8 ft. When I looked at the finished product, it wasn?t what I had envisioned. The area covered is approximately 62 inches long, by 68 inches wide and in one area 92 inches wide. He had put the plywood down, and then in some places, double the plywood to make it sturdier, but didn?t double the plywood on the entire area, it is two different levels. One area of single plywood is lower than another, so it is almost 3 different levels. Although it is only 3/8? it?s enough to trip on if you?re up there.
The third area was the ceiling area underneath my sunroom. He cut out the damaged wood and then said he would have to go back to Home Depot to get a 8-foot long 2x4 in order to attach the wood to something and that since it was late in the day, he would come back tomorrow to finish it. I asked why the 2x4?s were needed and he tried to explain it to me, but it just didn?t make sense. IF he had decided not to replace the whole piece of plywood, the smart thing to do would be cut the plywood along one of
the joists so you could attach the new piece to something. Secondly, the cut he made was crooked. There was no way a piece of wood would be fit into this area without a LOT of caulking to hide the joints. It would have looked terrible. At this point I told him I would confer with my insurance company and that we would just end this. I didn?t want him working on it any further, and I certainly didn?t want to have to pay for a second day. I paid him for a full day and went and hired someone else.
