"Highly recommend!! In 16 years, we have never had a need for a generator. We were told we were on the hospital grid. Well, apparently, those grids change. Over the last year, we have had too many electrical problems with long outages leading us to come to the decision that it would be prudent for us to buy a generator. After doing the research and seeing all the details involved with ordering, preparation, installation, etc, we decided there are too many important details and decided to look for someone to do everything for us. It's incredibly important to know that we came to this decision in December, 2020 (height of generator demand), during a pandemic and during a time of an extreme nationwide generator shortage. While researching, we saw so many people waiting months for a generator from other companies, trying to do everything themselves, waiting for the transfer switch, then an electrician and so on. We figured we would be lucky to have it for next winter. We met with Matt Sanford, he went over everything in detail, looked at the potential sites for the generator and the propane tanks, measured, etc. He could have sold us a bigger generator, but he thought it would be a waste for us to spend extra money on a specific generator I "assumed" we needed. Matt determined the size needed, made recommendations and we, happily, gave him a down payment check. He said 4-6 weeks. I still had my doubts, but here I am writing a review 4 weeks later, because the installation is complete. It is a two-day process. The workers who installed it showed up shortly before the expected time with masks on, were clear and concise, informative, professional and were very courteous of their surroundings including inside the house. In all honesty, I was floored with their demeanor. They completely took me by surprise and it was well above my expectations. When they called to book the installation, I was told the electricity "could be" out for several hours. We planned for several hours. When they arrived, they said it would be an hour or two. It was out for 15 minutes. They do as much as they can in advance so the power is out for as little time as possible, but there can be issues. DO NOT plan that your power would be out for that short period of time. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. The next person, who installs the gas portion, arrived bright and early the next day. He was just as nice, informative and professional as the workers the day before. The communication from the company is stellar. The people they have working for them are fantastic. I cannot say enough good about our entire experience. You WILL NOT be disappointed. By the way, here's something I didn't even know existed until Matt told me about it. Ask about the house surge protector. Even my insurance company had never heard of it. I wish I had known about it when it came out. Also, based on the work involved with the generator, it is comforting to know we are paying them for maintenance, monitoring, etc. In my opinion, this is a complicated machine to install and maintain. They see everything our generator is doing and if something is not right, they'll send someone out before we even know something is "not right". You don't want to be caught in a major outage and have a failing system. You go through the big expense of buying it and installing it, make sure it's taken care of on a regular basis by a professional just like your car, home heating system, etc. I highly recommend this company."

"The experience of going thru Angi's List was more like a shot gun effect. All of the contractors (4) I requested came from a list you generated and I filled out for them to respond. Within a very short time Proactive Comfort Responded in Person upon my invitation. I was filling him in on what was needed and had to break away for a phone call from your Rep. She said she would call another contractor to bid as one of them was busy and could not. He called as I was finishing the briefing to Proactives Tech . Included him in the Bidding after I gave him the briefing and Chose Proactive as he could start the next business day and your fellow could not . There was a mix up on the water heater size . He said he would change it out on next business day He did and a few days later it was then inspected by a Manchester plbg. Inspector .and passed after a slight modification. It was a very busy Time for me and this was my first time in the process of Angis."

Customers say: Quick response

"Jim was terrific. He explained everything about the generator and the wiring in a way I could understand. He was prompt and courteous. I had to call him after he left to come back for a minor fix, and he was there in no time! Donna took care of the arrangements, such as scheduling, billing, and those kinds of things. She was prompt, always answering calls and emails in an efficient manner. Thanks to all!"

FAQs for generator repair projects in Alton Bay, NH

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
