"I can't say enough good things about our experience with Des Moines Area Roofing. Tim was honest and helpful in assessing our roof and worked with us and our insurance. Brandon and the crew were professional and hard working, staying until dark each night, and Jan helped intercede with our insurance company. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again."

"The two young men that loaded our truck were very friendly and respectful. However, the loading job was extremely poor. When we arrived at our destination, the movers who unloaded (also with Two Men and a Truck) stated numerous times how terrible the packing job was. All heavy furniture was placed on top of boxes and totes, completely crushing many of the boxes. We had a damaged wagon, elliptical, sitting room chair set and more. I reported this to the company immediately. I was offered a $250 refund. I explained that the damage was not the potential fault of the moving vehicle or driver; that had the truck been loaded properly and boxes not crushed by heavy furniture, damage would have been mitigated. This office manager was unwilling to do anything further. Please note- Two Men and a Truck Urbandale does not stand behind their work and if you have damaged items, you have zero recourse. Very unsatisfied with the way this office conducts business and treats their customers."

"Great experience beginning to end. Their company name describes them very well! Joel answered my call when I first called for a quote. Ryan called me back shortly and then came out to discuss our needs and get me a quote. Nancy, Phyllis and Virginia packed us up, with great care (and lots of paper.) Brandon, Travis, Dexter and Tavian loaded us up one day...and unloaded us the next day. They guys strike just the right balance of hustle and careful. You First Moving does it right, and they communicate so well. If you need to move, make them your first call."

"CAUTION - when relying on Issac We needed our chimney rebuilt. Issac estimated it and finally we received a starting date. After, working an hour he said the job was too big for him. (some damage to our metal pieces). We request that he would paint it after we find another handyman. Once done he came back and quoted over $100 an hour to paint the chimney. He kept push us out on his calendar. We dropped him. He had us paid for the hour that he worked on the Chimney before exiting. Very poor communication if we are scheduled? If he is starting on the day he last told us? Problem answering texts."

"I was real nervous, but he reassured me everything would be ok. Then I met him and got to see him in action. When he arrived he went right to work. Myles was AMAZING! He moved everything I wanted him to move (just the heavy stuff and then I would take care of the rest) he was quick and so very careful with my mom’s belongings. When he got everything loaded we headed on over. He unloaded everything and put the things where we wanted him to put them. He was very thorough. He even had to rearrange a dresser because I told him the wrong spot via my mother. Myles was very patient with my mom and myself. All around hard worker. I would definitely hire this guy again. Thank you so much Myles! You were AWESOME!!!"

FAQs for waste, junk, building materials and debris removal and hauling projects in Altoona, IA

To throw out stained, broken, or infested mattresses or couches, call a junk hauler or take it to your local landfill yourself. If it’s infested with pests, you might want to call a pest control specialist near you. If you have infested furniture, there's a good chance you have an infested home, too.

Tipping furniture removal services is not mandatory, but it is a thoughtful way to acknowledge their hard work and professionalism. If you're pleased with the service, consider tipping junk haulers 5% to 10% of the total cost or $10 to $20 per worker. This is especially appreciated when the job involves heavy lifting, navigating stairs, or handling bulky items. Tipping not only rewards the workers for a job well done but also fosters a positive working relationship.

If your furniture is in good condition, you have a few options:

  • Donate to charities: Organizations like Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and GreenDrop often accept furniture donations and may offer free pickup services.

  • List online: You can list your items for free on local online marketplaces or community groups to find someone who needs them. Giving away your furniture not only helps you clear space but also benefits others in your community.

The cost to haul away junk depends on the haul’s size. A single item costs $60 to $150 to haul, with each additional item adding $20 to $40 to the total price. Hauling away a full truckload of trash or other junk will run $400 to $800.

Yes, some furniture retailers will haul away your old furniture when they deliver your new items. This service may be included in your purchase price or offered at a discounted rate. It's important to check with the store to see if they provide furniture removal and whether there are any requirements, such as a minimum purchase. Utilizing this service can save you time and effort in disposing of your old furniture.

In many cases, you can dispose of furniture in a dumpster, but regulations vary by location. Some areas prohibit items like mattresses or upholstered furniture due to environmental concerns. It's best to check with your local waste management authorities or dumpster rental company to understand what's allowed.
