"They didn't charge me anything. He came out to give me an estimate. He said he doesn't give free estimates but he came by to look at the trees that I wanted to get done. He told me that I don't need anything done for the tree because it's fine which is very commendable. A lot of people would say they would do that and would cost me extra dollars."

"The overall project went reasonably well, especially the landscaping part. We were less than thrilled with outdoor kitchen counter for reasons described below. We were also not so happy with the Alumawood patio cover. Although in each case the finished product was acceptable, the process was not great and they had to come back several times to complete unfinished work. First the landscaping: I think they do a decent job designing the concept and executing it. It appears that the crew they hired to do this knew what they were doing. Except for one plant that died soon after planting, the rest of the plants are doing well. They put in a very nice raised bed vegetable garden for us and set up the irrigation system. Overall, we are quite happy with the landscaping job. The concreting of the whole back yard around the pool was hired to another crew, who did a decent job. The in-ground pool was built by another we company we contracted separately and they put a concrete perimeter around the pool. The concrete patio was built ok, but we noticed some hairline cracks around corners already. But, nothing major. The concrete sub-contractor crew drank beers while working. We did not care for it - it reflects poorly on their professionalism and affect the product. However, the concrete patio looks good. They left some beer cans, which was not exactly thrilling, but it was all picked up by the McCabes crew later. The outdoor kitchen counter took close supervision on our part. First they placed it at a different location than what we wanted, but we were able to stop this and change pretty early on. The concrete counter top was poorly finished and the side stone tiles were also poorly done. They ran out of corner pieces and had to improvise. They did not allow for electrical outlets and the holes for the fridge and storage units were too small even though they measured these very carefully. It looked like the crew and foreman were not communicating properly. However, they were quite willing to correct these mistakes. The patio cover was the wrong color combination and they had to repaint the facia and pillars subsequently and it took them three tries to get adequate amount of paint. They did not mark the location for fan beams hidden under the patio ceiling so it was a guessing game on the part of the electrician to figure out where the beams were. We feel that the crew that did the kitchen and patio cover (the same crew that did very good landscaping) was not experienced in these things. The manager had to come and correct a lot of their mistakes himself and some times I felt that he himself was distracted with many other demands on his time. So overall, McCabes is good, but requires close supervision. Their workmanship on things other than landscaping needs to improve (maybe they lost some experienced people due to the pandemic and we were the guinea pigs for an inexperienced crew)."

"Mike came out and did a wonderful job of doing the actual landscaping we had in mind once we talked it over so we were on the same page. He modified the sprinkler system so it would be more efficient, worked with us on a few modifications and did a great job. His wife, Beth, came along when it was time to put the plants in the beds. She not only helped with the placing, but dug up the plants we had in our backyard and re-planted them in our new front yard beds! Even tho he didn't lay the initial sprinkler system, a few weeks after everything was done, I noticed a leak had sprung up in the system. I called Mike, and he came out and repaired the broken pipe at no charge! I highly recommend MLs Lawn service for all your outdoor needs! These are super nice people, and are wonderful to not only hire, but to know!"

"Part of the prep work required replacing a 30 foot section of 2 inch drain line with a 3 inch line. The original pipe passed under a block wall. Unfortunately, rather then install the line before pouring the footing or boring through it, the pipe went down under the footing and back up again. A very bad design. It turned out the contractor had a very difficult time punching the 3 inch pipe under the footing. Several times he suggested we just use the existing 2 inch line. Not a good idea. All the gutter downspouts and garden/patio drains were connected to the drain. After much work and the installation of a catch basin the new pipe was installed. The first problem I ran into while installing the irrigation was the fact that a significant number of roots had not been removed. One reason was that they brought in a very large rototiller which was unable to effectively handle the smaller areas. I rate the prep work as fair to poor. The cost for this stage (clean-up and prep) was about a third of the total cost. After, planting mulch was put down over the area. It was not evenly done as the depth varied from about half an inch to nearly three inches. I had an opportunity to inspect the plants prior to delivery but did not have the time to do so. Several of the plants already suffered from disease. The roses got powdery mildew within a week after planting. I was also disappointed that the contractor just planted the plants and trees without doing some necessary shaping and removing broken branches. My advice if one uses this contractor is to make sure you supervise very carefully."

FAQs for lawn care aeration projects in Anza, CA

Aeration is the best way to keep your lawn healthy and vibrant. Annual aeration makes your lawn more breathable and helps nutrients reach the roots, improving water absorption and reducing puddles where pests might breed. However, timing matters. It's best to avoid aerating during droughts, extreme heat, or if your lawn is battling weeds. A local pro can help you determine the ideal time for your yard.

Most lawns benefit from annual aeration to keep them healthy and thriving. If your lawn has a lot of thatch buildup—more than half an inch—you might need to aerate twice a year for a couple of years to get it under control. But if your soil isn't compacted and there's minimal thatch, you might be able to skip a year.

When you hire a professional lawn care company, a standard 10,000-square-foot lawn takes about 30 minutes to aerate. Uneven, sloped, or especially large lawns can take significantly more time. So, depending on your lawn's size and condition, the process can take anywhere from half an hour to several hours.

The best time to aerate your lawn is during the spring or fall when your grass is actively growing and the soil has enough moisture. Aerating once in the spring and once in the fall yields the best results. Avoid aerating when your lawn is dormant or right after heavy rain when the soil is too wet—that can make aeration less effective.

Even if your lawn looks healthy, aeration can still be beneficial. If you have good growth, proper drainage, and little thatch, you might not need to aerate right away. Regular aeration helps water and nutrients reach the roots, keeping your lawn strong over time. Keep an eye on your lawn's condition to decide when it might need aeration.
