"Our existing generator died. James diagnosed the problem and gave us a few options to repair or replace it. We chose to replace it. James handled everything, from getting and installing the new generator to electrical and fuel (propane) connections. We have asked him to schedule us for the annual maintenance on the machine. We are pleased, though we haven't lost power since it was installed, LOL."

Customers say: Quality work

"Long Electric goes above and beyond, here's how: 1. Generator maintenance: They have a thorough checklist, make a log of all repairs and replacements and then -- they clean the generator inside and out. We have had generators for 15 years and no other company took the time to clean the thing -- AND they're less expensive than most other electrical contractors. 2. Long Electric has always been at the house within 12 hours of a call for service. Example: We suffered a lightening strike to the house, which damaged anything in the house with a mother board, including the generator. Patrick, the master electrician who services our house, was here within 12 hours and installed surge protectors, repaired several GFI outlets that had been fried, got our electrical situation straightened out in one day. 3. A week after the lightening strike we lost power and found that the generator's mother board got fried due to the lightening strike and Patrick was able to diagnose it, repair and and get us back up in one day. Call Long Electric -- they'll install it or repair it in short order and have you back to normal. We would't go to another company."

"I wish I'd found these guys earlier. I have an older (1948) house and was having some odd electrical issues. Bill returned my call quickly and spent quite some time on the phone discussing the issue even before sending his crew came out. Long story short, not surprisingly my legacy service was not adequate for modern electrical demands. Bill and his team were great - they were timely, worked quickly, and explained what they were doing and why I needed it done. Communication was great throughout; I was having other work done at the house and Bill worked directly with that contractor to coordinate, which made life much easier with me. Finally, Bill handled all the PEPCO and county inspection interactions and got it all done promptly. Highly recommend for workmanship, professionalism, responsiveness, and fair pricing."

"We called mid-morning and got an appointment for the same afternoon. The technician who came was professional and knowledgeable. While repairing the furnace, he tested other components and explained what he was doing. This was our first experience with GAC and we would use them again in the future."

"Ludwing did an amazing job! He installed a new light fixture in my home and what I appreciated the most was that he explained the connection to the wiring and how things work. This was very helpful because he corrected a job from a handyman who installed a light fixture that could have destroyed my home. He is a master of his craft. Not only will I use him for future projects but have also shared his contact with friends needing electronic assistance."

"It went great! Professional, quick to call and discuss the request. What I like the most was their genuine interest in helping me fast. They gave me an estimate the same day and the job was performed in less than 48 hours. I would definitely hire Green Electric for my future requirements. Thanks Mr. Darnell!"

"Kevin Williams was sent to repair problems created by another electrician hired by Kitchen Saver during an expansive kitchen re-face and cabinet installation. Among other things, he re-located an unsightly transformer that had been previously secured to the inside of the first shelf of a main kitchen cabinet to a lower cabinet out of sight. Voila! Then, he re-routed unsightly wiring previously clamped to the far corner of a glass display cabinet so that it was out of sight. These were difficult puzzles to solve, as the new cabinets had already been installed and there was no longer easy access. Kevin was friendly, professional, and experienced! Great job!"

"Saul and his father came on time and inspected the attic fan, installed insulation washers, and added an override switch. The work was done in a professional manner, very neat. And I was shown photos of the final work (I did not want to climb into the attic). I highly recommend Three Brothers to anyone who needs electrical work."

FAQs for generator repair projects in Ashton, MD

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
