Customers say: Quick response

"Sean and his crew did an excellent job building a wooden handicap ramp for my husband. We needed the ramp by a certain date and it was completed as promised in one day in spite of the winter cold. We used it the next day and it was perfect, just what we needed. The ramp is well-designed to fit the area, and the work is excellent. We are very pleased with Sean and his work and recommend him highly."

"I renewed my memership with Angie's List and looked for chimney repairers I needed one near Jamstown, Ny. <br /> I called Exteriors by Maria and talked to a Mr. Robert Russo he happened to be doing a chimney job that same day only a few miles from my house. He said, he could stop by after his job and look at the chimney it was the same thing as the job he was just on... <br /> Mr. Robert Russo fixed my chimney with  fiberglass stucco the next day. <br /> It took him and his crew only four hours to put the fiberglass stucco on from top to bottom on my chimney.. <br /> He said when I get home from work  the chimney will be done he delivered on his promise....  <br /> The cost  was $1000 it was much better than having the chimney completely ripped up and replaced for probably $7000 and up. <br /> The fierglass stucco hardened after 48 hours and my chimney looks better than it ever did.... <br /> He had a booklet  showing other jobs he had done from floor tiles, roofing, gutter drains, windows replacements his crew are the complete package for housing needs from the roof to the foundation.... <br /> I will call him for other household repairs down the road.... <br /> He works all over  from Buffalo,NY,Ohio and Jamestown NY and other places... <br /> Thank you ....Mr.Robert Russo from Exteriors by MariaRepair chimney.... <br />"

"Mr. Furness (Pete) and his worker, Ben, were extremely thoughtful, courteous , friendly and took care in the area they worked on. They were careful to clean up, listened to our wishes and worked efficiently. They came when they said they would and the work done was well done. I would definitely recommend them and plan to use them again for other projects we are anticipating having done."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Canastota, NY

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
