"I had a new generator installed previously. However after installing it they found my 13 K generator which was in a box marked so, was actually a 17K. Al and Evan came back with the right Generator, and made the switch in about 1 1/2 hours. This included setting it up to run every so often, and installing it on my Android phone, so i could control, and check its function from same. Again they did excellent neat work. I will hire them again if i need them and recommend them."

"During the hottest days of the 2016 summer, the coil in our heat pump formed a leak due to the outer cage rubbing on the copper tubing. I called several companies, all who immediately saw $$ and just wanted to replace the whole system. This would have resulted in us being without air conditioning for several weeks. Then I called Harvey Ramer from Ramer Mechanical LLC, and he was willing to come out the next day. He was able to patch the coil, and within about 2 hours, our home was starting to cool off. We understood this was just a patch and we really did need a completely new system, but wanted to wait till the fall when temps were cooler. Harvey came back in the fall and provided a complete review of our home, including measuring square footage, looking at our insulation and windows, and doing a complete heat load check of our home to provide us the most accurate estimate for our new system. He spent about an hour and a half reviewing, testing and inputting data into his computer. After his review, we were provided with several options. Just FYI, I had another VERY well known large local company come out and provide a quote to replace our system as well. Their gentleman was here and gone in 15 minutes (not kidding). What a JOKE! I would never recommend them to anyone, even though I've used their services in the past, I will never use them again. Now, back to Harvey... We decided to go with the Daikin SkyAir Inverter Ducted unit which is a variable speed unit with very high efficiency compared to standard systems. This system runs at full 100% capacity down to 14 degrees, and is easily able to keep the home comfortable down to 0 degrees. He installed the whole system in 2 days by himself and did a fantastic job. Very professional in everything he does. With our old system, we supplemented our heat with a coal stove costing us an additional $750 to $1000 per heating season for 3-4 ton of coal. So far this year, I haven't even thought about starting our coal stove, and the system has had no problem keeping our home at 74-75 degrees, AND our electric bills are still lower than they were previously, even with the coal stove helping the old system. Then in December during a very cold near zero degree stretch, the outside drain line froze, which caused the safety switch to engage on the inside unit and our system did a safety shutdown. I sent Harvey a text message and he replied immediately. After providing him the symptoms, we figured out the issue and I had our heat back up and running in about 15 minutes. Awesome service. Thank you Harvey! I will recommend him to anyone."

"I originally called Larry on a Sunday afternoon thinking I would be leaving a message to schedule an at-home estimate to have the backup generator installed, but no, Larry, personally answered on a weekend and scheduled the estimate at my earliest convenience (early the next week).   The written estimate was provided within one week of the evaluation at a fixed fee (not a hour and materials basis),  therefore there would never be a surprise when I got the final invoice.  This is a huge selling point, to know exactly what you're paying before signing the contract! <br /> Work was scheduled based on the generator availability from the vendor (~3 weeks from 'green light').  Installation of these generators is a multi-day, multi-contractor (electrical and plumber/gas) process.  Dont  think it's a couple hours of labor on one day!   <br /> Day 1 - Preparing the plot where the generator would be installed.  LWB&S prepared the plot with extreme care for my lawn and landscaping.  They even replaced sod they needed to pull in order to appropriately level and set the concrete.  (1/2 day then left to allow prepared plot to set before installing). <br /> Day 2 (next day)- Installed generator outside and mounted panel by main electrical panels in house. (all day  ~6 hrs.) <br /> **Note: my biggest headache for this whole process was not LWB&S, but rather the plumber/gas company.  Because of licensing and code requirements, LWB&S were not qualified to perform the gas hookups required to provide a fuel source for the generator.  The only delays in the project was due to the gas company schedule to make the appropriate hookups from my LP tank.** <br /> Day 3 (~3 Weeks from D1 due to gas company) - Upon completion of the gas hookups, LWB&S were back out within days to compete the final hookup which included drilling a hole in the foundation to run the conduit from the main breaker switch out to the generator, transfer all circuits to be backed up to the gnerator panel, perform a final start up and give me a brief rundown of the equipment. <br /> Day 4 (~1 week from D3 due to availability from the County Inspector) - Final inspection from county and certification.  Due to this work being performed around the Chrsitmas and New Year holidays, the county inspector was slightly delayed.  I never had to call the county for ANYTHING (permits, inspections, etc.) LWB&S takes care of all that! <br /> All in all, I had an extremely positive experience with Larry and LWB&S in general.  For a job as expensive as this ($6,000+) I expected top notch service and received nothing short of exactly that.  I will be calling LWB&S for any/all electrical work in the future. <br /> Thanks Larry! <br /> <br /> <br />"

FAQs for generator repair projects in Chambersburg, PA

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
