"Jim was one of 7 contractors we interviewed for this job--3 from friends' recommendations, and Jim and the other 3 from here on Angie's List. We weren't sure what exactly we wanted to do, just that we hated the existing landscaping and had many pictures of examples of what we did like. Jim is very KNOWLEDGEABLE and PROFESSIONAL. He LISTENED and understood our preferences, and came up with a sketch/design as part of his proposal (at no additional cost)--several of the other contractors we considered wanted to charge $300-500 just to make a sketch (a high price just to see what they might have to offer for you). <br /> He had no high-pressure salesmanship, and he did not try to up-sell us on other services, details, or options, like some others did with their proposals. His PRICE WAS REASONABLE and he stayed WITHIN BUDGET limits we set for him. <br /> Although we vasilated back and forth about a few details, Jim was PATIENT with us, and both he and his assistant PROMPTLY RESPONDED to our questions and were FLEXIBLE with our needs--whether meeting in the evening, or requesting additional sets of stone samples as options of building material for our wall. <br /> He started the job PROMPTLY, and his CREW WAS GREAT. They worked very hard, but CLEANED UP well at the end of the day, so it didn't look like a disaster zone. My neighbors even commented as to how conscientious they were, by not starting with loud work that would wake late-sleeping-neighbors too early. <br /> In summer 2015 or 2016 I plan to do additional landscaping in the back yard, and I would happily use Jim again. <br /> <br />"

"First of all, the office was very courteous about explaining what we should and shouldn't do leading up to the day our driveway would be asphalted.  Then they were able to move up our appointment (our request) due to a cancellation.  They were so accommodating.  <br /> <blockquote> <blockquote> <br /> The crew arrived promptly the morning they were supposed to.  Josh, the foreman, walked the driveway with me to explain exactly what they were going to do.  The prep work --- edging, getting the weeds out of the cracks, blowing, etc --- was amazing.  They weren't rushing the job even though the weather was humid and expected to get into the 90's.  I was gardening in the backyard while they were prepping the driveway.  Josh saw that I was struggling with the weight of a full wheelbarrow and came over to help me get it over a curb. <br /> Once the prep work was done, they filled around 400' of cracks and then topcoated the entire driveway.  I went with this company because they explained that the materials they would use are the best.  I believe it because the job looks so professional.  It dried pretty fast too and was told this was due to a process called Nano Cure Technology.  They gave me paperwork that explained all this when they quoted the job.  <br /> 48 hours later, the driveway is ready to use again and looks SUPER!  I had confidence they would do the job right and they certainly did!  <br /> Thank you, Tuff Coat Sealcoating (Erodi.com).  <br /> </blockquote> </blockquote> <br />"

"He really worked with us and gave us an excellent deal. He also did a good job installing the lighting. Scheduling an appointment  was excellent, as well."

FAQs for holiday lighting add or remove projects in Clarkston, MI

If climbing ladders or handling wiring isn’t in your comfort zone, hire a pro. Look for installers who post clear per-foot or hourly rates, carry insurance, and have solid reviews. Comparing at least three quotes helps you spot fair pricing without sacrificing safety. Skipping credentials to save a few dollars can cost you far more in repairs, so pick a qualified team and enjoy a safe, eye-catching display.

Yes, booking between February and September often scores lower rates because demand is light and pros have open calendars. You might even negotiate a discount package that includes removal or storage. If the budget is tight, ask whether a handyperson or an off-season permanent-light install makes sense for your home and timeline.

Determining the number of holiday lights for your house depends on your home’s size and specific decorative vision. Your project requires 10 to 20 light strands for a basic exterior display, with 100 lights allocated for eaves and an additional 10 to 20 bulbs for each awning.

For trees and substantial shrubs, allocate five to 10 strands per unit to achieve complete and balanced illumination across your property.

Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it’s a nice way to thank your installer for a job well done. Most homeowners offer 10% to 20% of the total bill or round up to an even figure if the crew exceeds expectations. A small extra goes a long way toward showing appreciation—and may help you snag priority booking next season.

Yes, you can install holiday lights yourself if your property layout is straightforward and your electrical system is secure. Homeowners who are confident in their ability to safely handle wiring and use proper equipment can save money with a DIY approach.

However, it is crucial to test all outlets thoroughly and secure the proper ladders and safety gear before starting. Careful planning and adherence to safety guidelines are essential to protect yourself and your home while achieving an attractive display.

Start by clearing the area of loose debris, damaged shingles, and anything that could trip you up. Test outdoor outlets and, if you’re unsure, bring in an electrician. Use a sturdy extension ladder (or scaffolding for very high spots) and never work alone—having a helper steady the ladder is non-negotiable. Taking these simple steps keeps you, your roof, and your new lights safe.
