"We were downsizing from a 3000 sq ft house to a 1500 sq ft apartment, closing on the sale of our house and moving to Chicago. I had previously arranged with Habitat for Humanity Buffalo and the Salvation Army to take the stuff that I had assembled in the garage from the basement and second floor of the house. The trouble began when Habitat arrived at 2 PM on 7/3 with their truck 1/2 full. They refused to take the things they had promised by phone to take. Salvation Army was scheduled to take some stuff on 7/5 but I could see even more trouble coming. I called 1-800 Got Junk on 7/3 and explained how everything had to be out on 7/6 because we were closing on the house. The person at the 800# was most helpful. The local people were fully booked for 7/5 and 7/6 but he put me on a stand-by list and stated that the local people would call me by 11 AM. In fact they called and came by 11:30 and filled a truck. They promised to come back the next day for about a quarter truck full which they did. They were prompt and professional and worked hard. The place was clean and ready for the real estate closing. They saved the day. <br />"

"Had to move larger items than usual from my business here, to S. California local. Place I normally used backed out last minute. Scrambling, I found this place. Boy am I glad I did. Completely saved my butt & pricing was way better than those other companies were. Even the one I usually use. They packed up everything for me! I didn't have to do squat. A bonus! Very happy. Will hire in the future."

"Hilton Auto Transport operates like all the other companies. They are brokers that find truckers to move customer’s cars. The trucks are not their employees. The way this industry works is your broker posts the job on an online bulletin board for drivers to see. They take the job if it fits their schedule and meets their financial needs for the trip. The broker is paid their commission and the rest is paid to the trucker directly. Usually bank check or cash upon delivery. We wanted to move a car from the San Francisco area to WV. We had no takers for a week. This was not the fault of Hilton. Truckers seem to be afraid of WV. We changed the destination to a spot in VA that was only 20 minutes away and got an interested trucker the same day. In this industry, you are at the mercy of where drivers are headed. They try to make a load that will be delivered in a cluster for efficiency. You work directly with Nichole and she was good on the phone and tried very hard to find us a truck that would go to WV. We were not in a hurry and we had back and forth emails for a while before we signed up. Once we committed, she was great. Very up front about our particular situation and responded to phone calls. Their commission was reasonable, especially compared to many of the other brokers. The trucker we got turned out to be friendly and very efficient. The entire process was easy once we changed the destination to VA. All in all, we would use Hilton Auto Transport again."

"I found Guard Contracting through a search for garbage dumpster providers on Angie's List when I was planning to demolish my 3-car garage myself. After contacting them and learning that they also provide demolition services, I decided to hire them. They were able to test the garage for asbestos (as required by the city of Buffalo) for $350.00 and then demolish the garage and remove all debris and the concrete pad for $1,800.00. They were fast and efficient (even when working against the extremely wet spring we had this year) and I would recommend them to anyone with a demolition project."

"First off, the $875.00 listed for the cost of the repair was for the original work he completed about a month before to repair our leaking basement.  Our basement had a crack in the wall that a previous contractor (who shall not be named) had done a shoddy job repairing.  The crack was leaking quite badly after a period of heavy rain.  Zach dug out around the crack, filled it, and dug a french drain that also hooked up to our gutter - all for $875.00.  Did I mention he also stayed until 10pm to get the job done, and he managed to preserve the vast majority of our landscaping in front of the work.   <br /> Anyhow, fast forward a month and after another bout of rains, the basement once again had a small leak.  Turns out there was a hairline crack that extended behind the stud that he had missed.  He cut out the stud, filled the crack.  All in all, he was here for around an hour and a half and completed the second repair, free of charge.  I have nothing but great things to say about Zach.  He has also done other repairs on our house, including the roof, and the door frame.  He is a class act - always professional, honest, and very hard-working.  Discovering him was worth the Angie's List subscription alone!!! <br />"

FAQs for waste, junk, building materials and debris removal and hauling projects in Colden, NY

To throw out stained, broken, or infested mattresses or couches, call a junk hauler or take it to your local landfill yourself. If it’s infested with pests, you might want to call a pest control specialist near you. If you have infested furniture, there's a good chance you have an infested home, too.

Tipping furniture removal services is not mandatory, but it is a thoughtful way to acknowledge their hard work and professionalism. If you're pleased with the service, consider tipping junk haulers 5% to 10% of the total cost or $10 to $20 per worker. This is especially appreciated when the job involves heavy lifting, navigating stairs, or handling bulky items. Tipping not only rewards the workers for a job well done but also fosters a positive working relationship.

If your furniture is in good condition, you have a few options:

  • Donate to charities: Organizations like Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and GreenDrop often accept furniture donations and may offer free pickup services.

  • List online: You can list your items for free on local online marketplaces or community groups to find someone who needs them. Giving away your furniture not only helps you clear space but also benefits others in your community.

The cost to haul away junk depends on the haul’s size. A single item costs $60 to $150 to haul, with each additional item adding $20 to $40 to the total price. Hauling away a full truckload of trash or other junk will run $400 to $800.

Yes, some furniture retailers will haul away your old furniture when they deliver your new items. This service may be included in your purchase price or offered at a discounted rate. It's important to check with the store to see if they provide furniture removal and whether there are any requirements, such as a minimum purchase. Utilizing this service can save you time and effort in disposing of your old furniture.

In many cases, you can dispose of furniture in a dumpster, but regulations vary by location. Some areas prohibit items like mattresses or upholstered furniture due to environmental concerns. It's best to check with your local waste management authorities or dumpster rental company to understand what's allowed.
