"Rufino of Jireh Handyman LLC responded to my call the same day. Within a day or two, he was able to come by and make an assessment of the work and schedule a time for the work to be done. The day the job was done, Rufino worked with an assistant. I have used Rufino for a previous job in the past. I am very pleased with the quality of his work. He is a knowledgeable and highly skilled handyman who is very capable of doing and making the necessary repairs in a wide variety of situations. He always arrives on time. He is friendly, polite, and very professional; he works efficiently; and he has a very good work ethic. In addition, he is very respectful of his customers and their home . We were very satisfied with all of the work that was completed in our house on the day of the repairs. Rufino's does exceptional work, and he is trustworthy. I recommend him highly because of the quality of his work, his fair pricing, and his overall positive approach to his work and his customers. I will most definitely use his services in the future for those repairs that require the skills of a handyman."

"Eric did a fantastic job of designing and building shelving to organize bins. He also built an awesome workbench with several drawers and an open space for stools. Additionally, he put up 3 metal peg boards over the work bench and throughout the garage to hang toolss for different purposes such as short and long tools for gardening"

"Luis performed multiple projects including patching and painting damaged drywall, painting base of outdoor deck, placing saddles in a number of doorways, repairing damaged concrete floor and installing wood flooring, and adjusting the closing mechanism on a glass door by adjusting the hinges. His workmanship was excellent and he was very knowledgeable about all the details needed to accomplish a good result. I will be hiring him for all future house projects. I highly recommend him."

"Flavio and his associate were excellent in fixing my very squeaky indoor stairs. His communication was clear and he came the next day to see the issue and assess how to fix it. He gave me a quote via text later that day and once we agreed on the work, he came back the following day to do the work. They had to be completely ripped up, including the banisters because the stairs could not be accessed and secured from underneath. He laid some interior wood, nails and glue inside each step and then put it all back together. The stairs are very quiet now and even seem sturdier. Very please with that work and promptness!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Cortlandt Manor, NY

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
