"I have been looking for a reasonably priced generator repair company for some time. The person who answered the phone was extremely courteous and seemed to go out of her way to help me with my service needs. Within 30 minutes the owner called back and based on my description of the problem was able to suggest a simple fix over the phone that I could do and which solved my problem. I will definitely call them for all my future needs."

"We've been using this company for at least last 5-6 years to do the annual service checkup of our Generac Generator. Thankfully, due to their service, we've not needed any repairs. Joe also advised me & corrected an error in the original installation of the generator by hoisting it and putting a level base under it so I'll get better & longer service out if it. They're also great with contacting me each year to set up service & are very accommodating to my work schedule. Great, reliable company. Will continue to use them."

"From installing metal conduit, grounding all outlets, heighten electrical service pole, and installing new outlets- just to name a few details of this big project- they did it all and a great job! They were respectful of my property, insightful, and knowledgeable about residential electrical work. I had 3 other bidders for the job and I choose GRA because they actually took the time to assess the property and make recommendations. Additionally, they pointed out other electrical concerns that the other bidders did not notice. GRAâ s price was also the most affordable. They understood the job/upgrades needed and what I was looking for. Electrical safety was my top priority and it was great to work with a company with the same goal. The other bidders/competitors were recommending leaving outlets â ungroundedâ but update to GFCI and label as â no groundâ for close to the same price as GRA that was installing metal conduit and grounding every outlet throughout the home. It really shows GRAâ s commitment to safety and the project at hand. I highly recommend GRA for your residential home needs! There is no project too big or too small! They did a fantastic job !"

"I am in process of a deck build. The company involved (Wooddale,Il.) indicated they use a third party electrician that was not affiliated with the deck company, but they utilize their services when need. When I inquired during the build when I would be contacted by electrician, it seemed the build company dropped the ball by not scheduling the electrician. Alex, of Power Electric, Wheaton, Il. is the electrician who when contacted, immediately responded. He came on Tuesday, looked at my needs in the project and gave me a price range due to some 'possible' install issues within the home. because the project manager lacked on scheduling, I asked Alex when he could schedule the job since the installers were ready to start putting the deck boards on the frame. Alex, was AMAZING!!! He scheduled the job two days later. What first grabbed my attention, was Alex's personality- very personable, likeable, positive, etc. If you're a people person, you'd understand. His work is precise and clean. He and his partner (dad) wore booty's or removed shoes inside the house. They worked well together making job go smoothly. Alex took the time to lable the breaker, show me the outlets and what to troubleshoot if needed. And also what to show the installers in order to complete deck. Alex is a people person, dedicated to the customer. I would not only recommend Alex and Power Electric (Wheaton, Il.), I will use them for any furture electrical project in future. Thanks Alex."

Customers say: Quality work

"It went well. Ermir arrived on time and equipped. He spent a few minutes explaining his qualifications and method of troubleshooting. I described the problems we had. He asked for details in a way that a layman - such as me - could understand. He tested thoroughly and methodically. Isolated the problems quickly and had the necessary repair parts. I would definitely use him again and strongly recommend to you."

FAQs for generator repair projects in Downers Grove, IL

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
