This device is essentially the most important part of your system and the reason why there is an inspection on your property when obtaining a permit to do such work. This device is intended to prevent backflow contamination from your sprinkler system to your personal drinking water, as well as the water to your neighbors, and to the rest of the city. \n\nEssentially, the backflow preventer is a one way valve, once the water passes through it, it does not allow the water to go back to the source. This prevents any fertilizers, herbicides, and any other chemicals that may be in your lawn to infiltrate into your sprinkler system water lines and get back into the city drinking water system. This device prevents you and your neighbors from getting sick or even dying from your potentially contaminated sprinkler system.
