"Mr. Haas identified problems in our roof installation and issued a report. He suggested re-install and steps that we should take to get it done. It was a long process that involved county and DPOR. Mr. Haas was very helpful every step during the entire process. He is highly experienced and very responsive to our calls, text, and email. We eventually got the roof reinstalled in a very good quality. Mr. Haas was onsite multiple times to ensure the right materials and methods were used. It would not be possible without the help from Mr. Haas."

"This is the 2nd company we had to bring in to help renovate our house. I have to say I am extremely pleased the 2nd go round. Big street's crew was not only professional and respectful, ie., yes ma'am, thank you sir etc,... They actually knew what they were talking about when it came to the work that needed to be done and had several great ideas on how to improve some aspects. They renovated mykitchen, giving me room and better storage capabilities. They took the time to look at details and found a few mistakes the previous people had made and not only repaired the mistakes, but improved on the safety of the structures. They took all necessary precautions to help prevent future damages. Over all I was very pleased and impressed with the crew, their knowledge and their dedication. I definitely recommend Big street construction to anyone that wants reliable work done. Thank you Big Street Construction!! <br />"

"This entire total major contractor "job" for us turned out a far more pleasant experience than we had ever expected. <br /> Both 'co-owners' Eric and John, along with assistance from Tristan, were a remarkably smooth good-natured working team. <br /> They were also very sensitive to our own schedule needs, and likewise prompt, dependable, and cordial throughout their <br /> 4 days of work here. <br /> I have carefully researched and contacted all available roofing contractors since late last summer 2012, and along with <br /> advice from decades long friends across Fairbanks, my decision went with Superior Roofing...an established Family business <br /> grounded by Eric's now retired father. <br /> Closing comment ::::: quite unexpected on the 3rd day of activity, was Eric's suggestion to place an additional '' breather vent '' <br /> along the house's entire roof ridgeline to aid in the release of moisture from our indoor cathedral ceilings. Aside from needed <br /> materials, no time and labor was charged for doing this. <br /> Again, this was my best contracting experience throughout fifty years of hiring outside assistance for big jobs. It deserves <br /> an A+. <br />"

"There were problems from the begining due to structural damage from water infiltration over the years. The home is a geodesic dome so the repairs were not very straight forward. The company was very flexible in working with us while we completed these additional repairs. After the structure was repaired the install of new roofing went fairly well. Attention to detail was critical in keeping roof lines looking sharp and the crew did a good job of making this happen but I did need to bring some things to the Foremans attention for additional effort. All in all the finished product looks very nice and while we have not been through an entire year yet, it appears to be holding up well. We are happy with the roof and would hire the company again. <br />"

"They missed the first appointment due to illness. This was immediately rescheduled and the work went great. The workers showed up on time and immediately went to work. They performed the work in a timely manner and took extra care when doing the repairs because the roof shingles in the surrounding area were brittle. When they were finished they cleaned the gutters and surrounding deck of any debris and took all the waste material with them. The worker were friendly, polite, and professional. <br />"

"<br /> It was peak weather this early Sept and I could not even get one roofer to even call me about roof patch because leaking in an older lady's home, had no help, although crying and explaining I was desperate, please at least call, maybe you know someone, no roofer would call me back. About 3 roofers. And a few years earlier, a roofer, who works here only in the summer, who was going to remove and replace 2 metal roofing sheets, stood me up, saying parts never came in, and off he went to the lower 48. I kept it patched as best as possible, but it failed, as it only was a simple sealing which eroded away by snow and ice, causing the current leakage. <br /> <br /> I was very touched, relieved, and astounded by the excellent service and repair of Alaska's Chimney Service by Patrick, and the help of his very nice and helpful wife in the office who evaluated my call and realized someone really was in need of help. The same day, within just a few hours of the call, peak season, Patrick stopped by, evaluated and gave me a quote for the repair. He ended up doing much more, and RIGHT AWAY when promised, which again, was peak season, and after a bunch of work. He came fully refreshed, important to me that he did the work safely by installing the stops, on the roof to prevent falls, and after removed, and had good equipment, so I did not have to worry he was going to get killed here, because it is pretty high up. He did even more than originally planned, completely removed the old stack and patched, making a professional framing while doing the patch, then taking off, so that it looked good, not sloppy. And it does look a lot better, and he told me I don't need to remove the roofing panels, it looked pretty good underneath the patch, looked for other leaks up higher, too. And although he probably does not ever do this other kind of handy work, because I asked him if he would please, he tacked down a couple of metal shed shingles curled up and would cause leakage and problems, because the ladder was right there. He knew I have been in pretty rough shape. <br /> <br /> I know we are all are just trying to survive, but some do it more eloquently. Licensed, bonded, insured, eco-friendly, happy good talk about his family, not out to rip off old ladies...friends, this is as good as it gets!!! And I am sooo grateful. He never charged more than quoted, despite taking longer, he had to get more supplies, did extra too, and seemed refreshed and careful after working a number of jobs earlier. First rate fellow and service!!! <br />"

FAQs for roofing installation & roof repair projects in Fairbanks, AK

An average Cape Cod roof-raising project requires approximately two to three months from start to finish. The timeline depends on several variables, including weather conditions, contractor availability, material delivery schedules, and the specific complexity of your home's structure. The process involves multiple phases, including demolition, framing, roofing, window installation, and interior finishing. Working with an experienced contractor who provides a detailed timeline can help set realistic expectations for the project duration.

While most Cape Cod homes can accommodate roof-raising modifications, each house requires individual structural assessment. Older homes may need foundation reinforcement or wall strengthening before supporting additional weight. Factors like the existing roof framing system, load-bearing wall placement, and overall structural integrity all influence feasibility. A qualified structural engineer should evaluate your specific property before proceeding with design plans. Additionally, local zoning ordinances may restrict maximum building height or architectural modifications in certain neighborhoods.

Temporary relocation is highly recommended during a Cape Cod roof raising project. The construction process involves removing portions of your existing roof, exposing interior spaces to potential weather damage, and creating significant noise and dust. Most homeowners find temporary accommodations for the two to three-month construction period, with relocation costs ranging from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on your housing choices. If staying with family or friends isn't possible, budget for short-term rental or extended-stay hotel expenses as part of your overall project cost.

Consider roof raising when you experience severely limited headroom throughout the second floor, find yourself constantly stooping under sloped ceilings, or have minimal usable floor space due to low ceiling heights. Other indicators include inadequate natural light, poor ventilation, and difficulty accommodating standard furniture in upstairs rooms. Simple renovations can improve an attic's appearance, but cannot create additional headroom without structural modifications. A complete roof-raising project makes more sense than cosmetic renovations if you're seeking genuine second-floor living space rather than just storage improvements.

Begin your search by seeking contractors with specific experience in Cape Cod structural modifications and dormer additions. Request detailed portfolios showing similar completed projects and ask for references from previous clients with comparable work. Verify that potential contractors hold appropriate licenses and insurance coverage and understand local building codes relevant to roof raising. Interview multiple candidates, comparing price quotes and their communication style, project approach, and proposed timeline. The ideal contractor should demonstrate a thorough understanding of Cape Cod architectural characteristics and structural requirements.
