"It went great. The posts had to be tied into some angular non-traditional stairs. I could not figure out the cut, and I never did railings before so I decided I needed a professional. It was a small job only 3 steps but important and detailed. I had difficulty finding someone who wanted to take it on. Mike was very willing and confident he could do it. I was confident in Mike also, and was not even home when he was doing most of the work. Mike kept me informed with photos throughout the project. Final result looks great and is nice and strong. I highly recommend."

"Orest came to the home to see what was needed, gave me an estimate, and came to do the work the next day! His communication was excellent, and his work was outstanding! He repaired a broken handrail and added matching supports to the other rail. Orest rook the upstairs banister apart to make it secure and reinforced the downstairs banister, as well. By the time the work was finished, all the handrails and banisters were rock solid, and better than the day the house was built! I highly recommend Forest Flooring for their skill and craftsmanship, attention to detail and customer service!"

"The first floor of our duplex down flooded last fall and we worked with James at OWC Renovation to put it back together after mitigation. James was great to work with, he priced the project reasonably, is such a nice guy, and obviously takes a lot of pride in his work. I am definitely someone that notices the little imperfections in things and I can honestly say James exceeded my expectations. He did really great work, and I will definitely be using him for future projects!"

"Replaced dropdown stairs to attic. He was the only contractor I asked for estimates that came out and examined the job. He was always punctual. The price was fair. Peter did a fine job and cleaned up well afterwards. I would definitely hire him again."

"I can't be more happy with how our room addition project went. There isn't a time I can think of where I had to point out any flaws in the craftsmanship that Nick and his team at Biango Construction performed. Throughout the process there was a clear and open line of communication and dialog for recommendations and answers to all my inquires as we moved along the path of progress and completion. I would HIGHLY recommend Biango Construction. I've already begun the process for another project my wife and I had in mind."

"Michael Garman is not only an artist, he is the nicest person ever. His work is of the highest caliber. He is a perfectionist with his work. This is the FOURTH time I have hired Michael and will do so again. You won't find anyone better. He is always on time, polite, friendly and goes out of his way to help. He is so neat there is nothing to clean up afterwards. All that's left is to enjoy the beautiful job he has done."

"Very quick to respond to posting and came next day for estimate. This was a small repair job on fascia and flashing which they handled at time of estimate for a reasonable price, especially considering the minimum fees that bigger contractors charge -- if you can even get the bigger guys to come out. Contractor (Eric) seemed knowledgeable and was polite and professional. Would hire again."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Glen Ellyn, IL

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
