"Orest came to the home to see what was needed, gave me an estimate, and came to do the work the next day! His communication was excellent, and his work was outstanding! He repaired a broken handrail and added matching supports to the other rail. Orest rook the upstairs banister apart to make it secure and reinforced the downstairs banister, as well. By the time the work was finished, all the handrails and banisters were rock solid, and better than the day the house was built! I highly recommend Forest Flooring for their skill and craftsmanship, attention to detail and customer service!"

Customers say: Quality work

"Joseph is a true artisan in wood craftsmanship. He built a custom set of stairway posts and ballisters and handrails. He was very attentive to details and the end result is exquisite, truly a custom job I will always be proud of every time a visitor enters my home and the first thing they will notice is this magnificent work of art. I have already made arrangements to have Joseph work on other future projects in my home. "

"Ralph from KLK Carpentry did an outstanding job converting my old carpeted staircase to a beautiful hardwood staircase. He was very professional and always on time, and he cleaned up nicely after each day's work. Ralph took great care in building such a beautiful staircase for me, also replacing the old wooden spindles to new, modern iron spindles. Ralph took great care in making sure I was completely satisfied with the excellent job he did with my new staircase. I would highly recommend KLK Carpentry."

"We hired Brandon to tear down and rebuild our existing deck and screen it in. We also had him cover up our front stairs with composite decking over the concrete. His attention to detail and craftsmanship was excellent. He put in long days to complete the projects on time and correctly. All passed city inspections without issues. He was easy to work with and worked with us even as we made last minute changes. We are so impressed with his work that we are bringing him back in the Spring to replace and repair our front door. Don't pass him up!"

"Beckett came to fix up my bathroom and make it a dream! He added crown moulding, replaced my sink, toilet and vanity. He kept the bathroom tidy everyday after the day was done. I would highly recommend him for jobs such as these especially if you want it done exceptionally well! I couldn't find a single thing out of place that I wasn't in love with! Thank you so much for making my bathroom dreams come true!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Grayslake, IL

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
