"For some time, my wife and I knew we needed to renovate our deck and redo the stairs at the back of our house. I called three companies and Isaac came, gave us an estimate, explained the options so we could choose the best one. We scheduled the work. He came with his team and executed the work with quality and professionalism. He is friendly and easy to deal with."

"Micah did a superb job. He replaced the top railing around our deck railing. Repaired and painted several inside and outside doors. He painted our laundry room the precise color of our kitchen. Micah was professional and demonstrated good attention to detail. He even hired some helpers in order to get the jobs done on time. I will hire him again."

"I did not have him do the project I originally contacted him about (fence). High wind blew the roof off my deck and piled it in my yard. I had him clean up and repair those damages. He got it all taken care of very quickly, did a good job and was very nice to work with."

"Alex arrived on time for my chain link fence quote and gave gate info as to what we should have in the space being custom fenced in. His quote was reasonable and he was able install the fencing the following week with a deposit on materials. We are very happy with the fencing to keep animals contained in a smaller area of our yard. A few minor scratches were promptly attended to and I am extremely satisfied with the completed job!"

Small jobs welcome

"Tom and his team did a great job on our deck repair and rebuild. Where they saw a needed fix, they fixed it with no to minimal impact on the contracted price. They stood behind their work, provided receipts for all materials secured for the work, and gave us full assurances in writing that they would fix any abnormalities we encountered. I recommend this company highly and will hire them again in the future."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Hollister, MO

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
