"Excellent, no problems. My car was new the first year I used the service and there has never been any damage during the transports. The men picking up and delivering the car have always been pleasant and cooperative. Both Ely and Guy at United Transport has been highly responsive to my needs. I would highly recommend this company."

"They promised us they could assist us over the phone to program the new keypad and garage door openers we purchased. When it came time to help us the person on the phone was impatient and said we would need a service call. When the service technician arrived it took him no time at all to program them and he admitted it was something that could have been handled over the phone. I disputed the charge for the service call and the office personnel I spoke to was very short and snippy with me but promised to discuss with the owner and call me back. I hesitated when she said this and she reassured me that she would definitely call me back. I waited 3 days. She never called back and my check was cashed. My husband, whom they spoke to, had a 20+ year career of working with complex motherboards of equipment so it was definitely not an issue of him being unable to follow the instructions given. I absolutely feel that they were just trying to fleece us out of the cost of a service call. It is absolutely the last money they will ever receive from us."

"We were monthly platinum members for years, but every time we needed service, they were either busy, or their quote was triple any other company in the area. The last straw was when they sent someone out to look at our furnace, he was there under 30 minutes, said the "door panel" wasn't closed correctly and charged us $368! When I called the office the next day, at first they were understanding and I thought they would correct the invoice that was for no real service or parts at all, and just charge me the trip charge, but they had already cashed the check and 2 days later claimed there was nothing they could do. I immediately cancelled our membership with all of their services! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Madison, SD

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
