"We had Plantrex do a deck resurfaced. After it was in, there was a tenant caused deck fire. Plantrex did an outstanding job on both the original resurface and on the deck repair and restoration after the fire. Cleanup, everything was great."

"Denis was very responsive to communication regarding the job of repairing dry rot in structure supports. The job was done quickly, on schedule, and the area they repaired looks great even though they had to take off siding and remove an exterior door to get to the repair. I would definitely hire them again!"

"I can not say enough good things about Big Dog Handyman Services! We were in the middle of a high-stress, time-sensitive scramble to get our house ready to list, and one big project still loomed?a shower that needed plumbing adjustments and an insert installation. It had been on our to-do list forever, always pushed down by more urgent tasks. Enter Big Dog Handyman Services. From the very first interaction, they were responsive, kind, and professional. They understood the urgency of our situation and managed to fit us in the same week?which felt like a miracle. The work was completed quickly and beautifully, just in time for our listing photos. Their craftsmanship and efficiency lifted such a huge weight off our shoulders. And as a bonus? My Corgi, who is notoriously picky about who she lets in her domain, gave them two paws up. That is the ultimate seal of approval in our house. Thank you, Big Dog team, for saving the day with grace and good humor. You will be the first we call! "

"The wind blew the tarpaper off my shed roof during a rainstorm. I live in a one-bedroom house and my shed is essential for storage. I have no idea how to find a roofer, so I asked Angi. Randy of Roof4Life was the first to call, and he sent Giovanni Bozzolo to estimate the price. Gio asked good questions and gave me a reasonable quote which I accepted. The following Saturday the sun came out and a crew arrived to give me a new roof in just a few hours. I couldn't believe how easy they made it look and how quickly the shed was made better than it had ever been! The workers were experts at their craft and fun for me to watch. I am pretty sure my job was not as big as many jobs Roof4Life has done, but they made me feel like their most important customer. You should check them out!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Maple Valley, WA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
