Small jobs welcome

"They came out to diagnose the furnace electrical problem. The tech was able to figure out where the loose cable was located, and made the recommendation for the furnace people to repair. So there was no need for Dalcon to go further. As there was no charge for this service , I was extremely pleased about this resolution."

"The oven of my old electric range bit the dust, so I ordered a new Kenmore range from Sears. After waiting almost 2 long weeks for the delivery date, I was looking forward to being able to cook properly again. However, when  the range arrived, I had an unhappy surprise- the old range was hardwired into the wall, so they could neither remove the old one, nor install the new one. I was told I would need electrician to sort it out before they could do anything further.
Sears left the new appliance in the garage,  saying to call once  the electric work had been completed. I was tearing out my hair, just anticipating how long it would take to get an electrician to do the job, and had no idea who to call. I had been meaning to have some minor electrical repairs done, but being busy like everyone else, I had put it off. Now I was in a crunch, and I did not have anyone I knew to call.

So,  I went on Angie's list and tried calling Apollo Electric. I was amazed that my call was answered right away (by an actual human, not a machine), and even more amazed when he said he would come over in about an hour. Right on time, Ted Bakelis came over and evaluated the situation. It turned out that my old oven was not only hardwired into the wall but the circuit was only 30 amps, not the minimum required 40 amps. This did not faze Ted, who promptly went out to get the new materials required while his assistant  carried on with the preparation. In a fairly short period of time, I had exactly what I needed for my new oven.
To top it all off, Ted and his assistant dragged the new range into my kitchen and set it up, so I could actually cook that night! This was completely above and beyond the call of duty, and I am so grateful. He's a great guy, and he really came through when I was in a pinch.  I have been compiling a wish list of house tasks require  anelectrician, and I definitely will be calling Ted of Apollo Eectric to help me out. Completely satisfied! That's a rare thing, these days. Thanks Ted, and thanks Angie's List.

"I encountered a problem, and called ARP Electric to help diagnose and repair. Ahmed was able to come out the same day (!), even waiting for me at my house when my previous appointment ran long (!!). He was able to diagnose the problem almost instantly - and had me up and running immediately thereafter. The issue was actually due to a dumb mistake on my part, but Ahmed went out of his way to put me at ease, and reassure me about how such things could easily happen to anyone (which was very appreciated). Ahmed was personable, very knowledgeable and capable, and was simply a pleasure to meet and work with on this effort. For future electrical work, I'll be looking to hire ARP Electric once again."

"The electrician responded promptly and gave me estimates for several different ways to solve the problem. The work was done quickly - it looks beautiful and he answered questions about several other issues in the house. He even changed the light bulbs in a very tall chandelier for me! I expect to be calling him again for another project."

"Bought a new electric clothes dryer to replace the old gas dryer. Found that our 220VAC outlet was not working. Gaetaway showed up on time, traced the source of the problem quickly, and repaired it. The technician was courteous and efficient. I will call them again, should the need arise."

"Saul and Juan arrived on time, determined where the fault lay, advised me on what I can do to save some labor costs by running wire myself. I have worked on some electrical equipment over the years so usually am familiar with what is needed or not needed. These guys didnâ  t try to sell me something I didnâ  t need. Very professional and I would recommend them to others. Thx. Brian Napa County"

FAQs for generator repair projects in New-almaden, CA

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
