"Flaviu is a nice guy, pleasant, respectful and great craftsman. Our project/Stair and railing came out beautiful. He walked us through everything as it was unfolding. The prices were reasonable as well. I would definitely recommend him for your next stair & railing project. -Calderon Lemont, IL"

"It went great. The posts had to be tied into some angular non-traditional stairs. I could not figure out the cut, and I never did railings before so I decided I needed a professional. It was a small job only 3 steps but important and detailed. I had difficulty finding someone who wanted to take it on. Mike was very willing and confident he could do it. I was confident in Mike also, and was not even home when he was doing most of the work. Mike kept me informed with photos throughout the project. Final result looks great and is nice and strong. I highly recommend."

"Charles came to give an estimate soon after we talked and was able to do my repair the next day. We are very satisfied with the work he did and will hire him again for another project that he looked at and told me what to do to get the materials so he could replace only the broken part of windows. Appreciate his work!!"

"Replaced dropdown stairs to attic. He was the only contractor I asked for estimates that came out and examined the job. He was always punctual. The price was fair. Peter did a fine job and cleaned up well afterwards. I would definitely hire him again. "

"We've used Biango Construction twice now and we are amazed at the work Nick and the team did each time. The latest project was to build custom closet cabinets in our master bedroom and a custom bench in the master bathroom and they are amazing! Nick was very helpful during the pre-build process as he came onsite and we discussed various wood options, layouts, designs, etc. and during the build process Nick was great about giving us progress updates. I also have to commend Nick on being flexible and taking on extra last-minute projects that came up. He was able to also install crown molding throughout most of our upstairs, wainscoting in the master bathroom and several new doors and trim. We would use Biango Construction in the future."

"James is very detail oriented and was the only one of the four individuals to provide estimates that checked under the back porch for rot which was there and definitely would have added to the cost, however, he found it and accounted for it. In doing the job, James is very passionate about his work and makes sure that it is done right.  His work with wood is exceptional."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Oak Brook, IL

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
