"Randal Billings responded to my Home Advisor request for tree trimming and removal. It was Sunday afternoon and he responded to my request inside of 40 mins. I asked him when he could come out and quote. Expecting him to be a typical contractor as this was Labor Day weekend I thought he would say Tuesday. Randall was on my property that afternoon. We walked the property and I showed him 12 years worth of deferred tree trimming maintenance plus a dead tree alongside my home that would need an expert to remove. Randal assured me that his crew would make quick business of the massive amount of work. In my head I kinda was like no way this guy is pulling my leg. He gave me a execptional price an offer that was very well calculated by his years of experience. Remember this is Sunday before Labor Day in afternoon. We had come to terms fairly on the financial portion and now came the part that most home owners are concerned with quality work completed as agreed upon and with as little inconvenience as possible. I asked Randall when could I expect to see the work to start an when could I expect the work to be completed. He responded quickly saying we start 1st thing in the morning 9:00am on Labor Day and we finish by sun down????????? Ok I'm thinking to myself OK! This morning his crew of men started showing up at 8:30 unloading and ready to work at 9:00 as Randal had promised. By noon they had worked the entire front side of my property trimming heavy oaks and bushy palms that have not had any attention in 12 years. I will say again it was a massive amount of work. His crew never stopped men where in the trees with chain saws and men on the ground loading debris like a well oiled machine. Everything was cleaned up with a rake as it was cleaner than when they came. His crew also completed a fair amount of trimming that we had not talked about in our original agreement but they did it anyway as they felt it was the best time to do it as they where there. My wife and I watched as if it where some kind of dream. It began to rain and thunder and I urged them to be safe and pause as it blew buy but they seemed very a custom to working and this was no challenge for these guys. They saved the toughest tree for the last wich made no sense in my mind as I would have done that clearly 1st. His climber nickname "Spider" appropriately so was in the top on this tree so fast you would thought he was headed home. The problem tree was in a "y" and overhanging my home rather large with air conditioning units in the landing area. Well Mr.Spyder assured me he had watched a YouTube video on this an thought he could handle it. He was quiet funny I think that actually was his way of keeping me calm as a home owner and well it worked. This guy is a tree surgeon never once did his calculation fail. "We dealt with the owner, Rene Lopez. We agreed to two contracts, one for $1000 for sprinkler installation and $7900 for landscaping our front yard and a second contract for $4900 to erect a 14'x14' pergola, which we provided, put pavers under it, as well as a paver walk, take out an old deck, install a small arbor we had already assembled, and install a small sprinkler system in the back yard of an adjoining apartment. He required 50%, i.e., $6900 down. Then the trouble began. He repeatedly promised to come with his crew of 20 guys and get the work done over one weekend. But there was always some excuse that prevented him and his crew from showing. Some of his excuses were clearly lies. Rene haphazardly installed some pipes and sprayers in about a third of yard but never connected them to the water source and never installed a sprinkler control system. He left it for several weeks, with the yard dug up and pipes laying all around. He never started or completed any other work. We finally gave him an ultimatum to set a schedule he could and would honor. Of course, the next time he was scheduled to come, he no showed. We told him that we had no faith in his honesty or ability to do what he had contracted to do, so we were canceling both contracts, wanted him to remove what he had done, as it was worthless to us as it was, and to refund our $6900. Rene said he had put in $3000 in work and supplies in the partially done sprinkler system. He said he would keep $3000 or complete the $1000 sprinkler installation for $3900! We took this matter to arbitration through Home Advisor. The arbitrator found in our favor and instructed Rene to return $6700. The arbitrator concluded that Rene had performed only $200 worth of work despite his claim that he had done $3000 worth. We are now waiting to see if Rene returns us our money or if we have to take the arbitration award to court for enforcement. Meanwhile, our yard is a mess. We strongly recommend avoiding this business!"
