"I selected SECI Construction from a list of 3 provided by Angi's List. It was the last contractor that I interviewed, on April 15, 2025. Although the estimates from contractors #1 and #3 were close, I chose SECI Construction, contractor #3. Contractor #2 was too low, I thought, and didn't give me a comfortable feeling. All contractors inspected the attic, but only the SECI rep, who was also the supervisor of the job, went on the roof and did a thorough inspection. We spent about 3 hours going over the details of the project, after which he gave me a price of $10,000 for the complete job, which would include up to 192 sq ft of plywood to replace any damaged wood. I charged $3000 on my credit card as a down payment. The crew chief arrived on Tuesday, Aprill 22, 2025, at about 7:00 am, while the rest of the work crew arrived by 7:30 am. They placed tarps around most the house to protect the shrubbery from falling debris. The project supervisor arrived later. The asphalt shingles and vapor barrier had been removed down the wood by about 12:30 pm. It was then that the project supervisor came to tell me that some of the existing wood, which is 3/4" tongue and groove, was starting to come up at the joints, and would splinter if more nails were put into it. Walking on it, he said, it did not feel very secure. At no time during our original 3-hour discussion did he mention this possibility, given the age of the home, nor did he give me any indication that he suspected this during his inspection while on the roof or in the attic. He offered 2 solutions: the first was to tear off all of the existing wood, down to the rafters, and replace it with plywood. This would be the more expensive of the two, and he didn't think all of the work would be completed that day. The second was to make any necessary repairs to the existing wood, then cover the whole roof with plywood. He said that, should I decide to install the new asphalt shingles on top of the existing wood, chances were that I would need a new roof much sooner than if I followed one of his solutions. My impression of the roof from ground level was that it looked sound, especially since it had not been leaking. Even when I examined sections of the old wood after his crew began making repairs, I didn't see anything that couldn't continue to be used. I felt coerced into going along with his second solution, which I finally agreed to. The additional work amounted to about $8800, even with some discounts, as well as masonry and flashing work, which he said he did at no additional cost. This additional work also included a surcharge for using my credit card, only making matters worse. When I called the office to complain, a salesperson told me that he would only be able to give me a 10% discount, which, he said, the project supervisor had already done. When I asked who was above him, I was told it was the owner. When I asked to speak to the owner, the salesperson told me that he would relay my story to the owner, and that the owner would speak to the supervisor. The supervisor told me the next day that the owner was upset with him for giving me the discounts he gave me. The crew was totally professional, working together as a team that obviously knew what they were doing. I have nothing but praise for them and their crew chief, who worked right alongside them."
