"The work he did was thorough and very good. The work performed would be the basis of my recommending him to anyone. My pause or hesitation is in his communication with me for an estimate. We walked around my entire house and I took notes about what he said it would cost and how much time it would take. I pointed out areas in both the front, back, and sides of the house. He told me it would be $120 and take about 4-5 hours. On the day he came out, he began work swiftly which was appreciated. Showed up exactly when he said he would and started to work. When about 4-5 hours expired, he said he was done. I asked if he did the entire house and he said he thought he only had to do the back area and a side. I wasn't sure I heard him correctly (!), but said I wanted/needed the entire place done --- as we discussed. He was pleasant and said it would take more time but he would do it. At that point, of course, I figured it was probably going to cost me more but I wanted the work completed ---- and he did it and spent a good deal of time and, its important to say, he did a very good job. When everything was done, he said the final charge would be $500. I gasped. From $120 to $500 --- whoa, I didnâ t see that coming! He said the $120 was just to rent the power washing equipm't alone, plus $50/hour ---- he never said this during our first meeting because I knew I was getting other quotes for over $300. So my lesson learned: if its too good to be true, it probably is. In this case it definitely was. His lesson, if I can respectfully suggest: Please be much more specific about your charges. You never mentioned your hourly rate. You never mentioned the cost of the equipm't alone was $120. In the end, while I am satisfied with his work (I won't back down from that and he did spend a great deal of time)....had I known and understood the true costs for what he was going to bill, I might've gotten another quote. Summary: -Very good work and I felt he cared and strived to do a great job. In that regard, he succeeded so I am not disappointed. -However, as someone who does this for a living (and this is the first power washing experience I've ever had), I would've wanted better communication from him. Maybe he needs to put something in writing rather than my having to take notes. If he had broken down the potential cost up-front (which only came to light once all the work was done), that would've been a much better approach, at least for me and my budget. I'm still waiting to receive my final back-up receipt bill, and look forward to getting that from him. Thank you and please note he is a very kind, patient, helpful, and friendly person. I am glad to have met him."

Customers say: True professional

"We decided to remodel our outdated bathroom, and McCormick Home Builders was a fantastic choice. Khaled and the team delivered high-quality work within the timeline and our budget. Every detail, from the tile work to the lighting, was beautifully done. They communicated well throughout, keeping us informed at every step, and the end result was truly a spa-like bathroom we can enjoy daily. We’d love to work with them again!"

"Second rate work, will flake on the job, and will miss deadlines. I should have known not to hire this company when they missed the estimate appointment, but I decided to give them a second chance and unfortunately ended up hiring them. Well, as the saying goes, "Buy nice, or buy twice.""

FAQs for holiday lighting add or remove projects in Santa Barbara, CA

If climbing ladders or handling wiring isn’t in your comfort zone, hire a pro. Look for installers who post clear per-foot or hourly rates, carry insurance, and have solid reviews. Comparing at least three quotes helps you spot fair pricing without sacrificing safety. Skipping credentials to save a few dollars can cost you far more in repairs, so pick a qualified team and enjoy a safe, eye-catching display.

Yes, booking between February and September often scores lower rates because demand is light and pros have open calendars. You might even negotiate a discount package that includes removal or storage. If the budget is tight, ask whether a handyperson or an off-season permanent-light install makes sense for your home and timeline.

Determining the number of holiday lights for your house depends on your home’s size and specific decorative vision. Your project requires 10 to 20 light strands for a basic exterior display, with 100 lights allocated for eaves and an additional 10 to 20 bulbs for each awning.

For trees and substantial shrubs, allocate five to 10 strands per unit to achieve complete and balanced illumination across your property.

Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it’s a nice way to thank your installer for a job well done. Most homeowners offer 10% to 20% of the total bill or round up to an even figure if the crew exceeds expectations. A small extra goes a long way toward showing appreciation—and may help you snag priority booking next season.

Yes, you can install holiday lights yourself if your property layout is straightforward and your electrical system is secure. Homeowners who are confident in their ability to safely handle wiring and use proper equipment can save money with a DIY approach.

However, it is crucial to test all outlets thoroughly and secure the proper ladders and safety gear before starting. Careful planning and adherence to safety guidelines are essential to protect yourself and your home while achieving an attractive display.

Start by clearing the area of loose debris, damaged shingles, and anything that could trip you up. Test outdoor outlets and, if you’re unsure, bring in an electrician. Use a sturdy extension ladder (or scaffolding for very high spots) and never work alone—having a helper steady the ladder is non-negotiable. Taking these simple steps keeps you, your roof, and your new lights safe.
