"3 Nails Grace responded to my request quickly and completed the ramp exactly as we discussed. They communicated with me regularly about the job, returned my calls/texts immediately, and answered all my questions. The ramp is solid, sturdy, and anchored firmly to the concrete--top quality work. Every member of the crew is highly skilled, professional, and courteous. Thank you so very much!!"

"My project was the restraining of my large deck and stairs. Fernando and his team provided friendly, professional service. The experience was excellent from estimate to completion. They made good recommendations and the service was top notch. I highly recommend them for painting. I also plan to use them for other remodeling projects."

"Mr. Myers looked at my project, began it and then said because of some problems with the way it had originally been constructed, it was beyond his expertise and that I need to hire a specialist, an electrical company. I did hire an electrical company and he was right, that's who I should have gone to to start with. But, man what integrity! I would definitely have him back."

"I have used Mr Handyman 3 times in the last 90 days. Zac repaired my gate to my fence that was broken, Keith installed new ceiling fans on my back porch and Kevin repaired the stucco on the front of my house and installed a mantle on my back porch as well. All 3 did an amazing job. They did the job on time and in the budget provided. I would recommend this company for anyone needing work on their home. They will continue to be my go-to on improvements and repairs."

"Angel did multiple jobs for me including replacing rotted wood on front eaves of house and painting outside. Inside, he not only did painting, he built a bookcase into the alcove by the fireplace. Replaced hinges on kitchen cabinet doors, and a member of his team installed an outdoor ceiling fan. Itâ s hard to remember everything he did for me, but I certainly miss him and wish I could find someone here who is half as good."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Knoxville, TN

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
